City of Heroes/Villains have a number of classes that can take archery as powersets. Apparantly Archery is among the best AoE-sets in this game. If you want somewhat over-the-top archery CoX might  be a good idea. :-)

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions. I created a character in RF Online and will try their Archer class (Accretian). I'm also going to go pick up Guild Wars later today.

Sad that Archers don't get more love, especially in the F2P market. The nice thing about the Archer class is that you often get a pet to pal around with and help out when the mobs close in.

Good choice, Guild Wars is another good recommendation too, awesome game with a great archer class.

Anyway, on RF, you should hop on the Letorn server and look up a guild called FML (stands for F**k My Life), and try to get ahold of my brother who is the leader of the guild and one of the better players on the server and a former Archon aka elected leader for the race (currently playing a level 57 Trapper ranger, but switching back to a Striker soon). His name is AOD (or possibly A.O.D. forget if he has the periods or not). Him and his guild should be able to help you out a lot with any questions/issues you have in the game.

Grand fantasia's ranger was the only time I could use a ranger without getting bored but it doesn't have a pet but you have many variety of ranged skills and have dual wield weapons for when in melee range.

None of these games... None of them... get it even close to reality.

So I just go out and shoot my bow for real. Far more satisfying than these games that never even get the proper Stance right in the basic animations.

Most fun I've had in a video game archery setting was Oblivion for realism'ness and LOTR - The Two Towers (Playstation 2) for arcade-action fun. At least those games got the massive damage a good aimed arrow can do right.

But I won't be happy with archery in a video game until they make you un-String your bow when you're not using it.

Dont have to unstring bows in game cuz they are magical duh.... ;-)

hah but what is realistic in mmo's? About the most realistic thing I've found are aircraft in WWIIOL, but then it's still just a sim. I have a couple Ben Pearson's, but I still like bow's in mmo's, though annoying when most are magical. But it's more than just shooting a bow, there are abilities and tactics involved, and I find that a lot more fun than pure casters or even games with SMG's etc. The best games with bow hunting are when you are forced to think ahead, and even plan an escape rout if things go bad. Even comes down to the ammo you select, or even make with wide variation like in EQ.

M59, UO, EQ1, WWIIOL, PS, EnB, SL, SWG. MoM, EQ2, AO, SB, CoH, LOTRO, WoW, DDO+ f2p's, Demo’s & indie alpha's.

i always liked Vanguards Rangers, they also have a fletching skill and gathering skill. gather materials as you ran around like feathers, stones and twigs then later used fletching to craft the arrows.

F2P Warhammers Shadow Warrior was really good, i always prefered rangers with no pets so i liked them better than the Squig Herder

sorry, but i don't buy into the "realism" argument in games.  why would you want to sit at a computer and emulate what you can already do in real life?  remember, games are for entertainment, and should never be intended to replace real life.

one of the biggest mistakes i find in any game is the attempt to emulate realism in their characters, whether it's looks, or movement, or other.  what i want is a place to visit that gives me an escape from my daily life.  the more closely a computer mob resembles something in real life, the more critical i become of it, focusing on the flaws rather than the overall affect.  it's not something i can control, it's just how i am.  i'm the same in movies.  if something is done in such a way that it doesn't hide the fact that it's not trying to be realistic, then i can relax and enjoy it for what it is.  but when something is pretending to be real when i know that it isn't, then alarms get triggered off in my mind.

i'm sure that you really enjoy your archery, and i'm sure you're proud of your skills.  but to expect a machine to be able to give you that same experience is, perhaps, a little bit naive.

Guild Wars ranger. Its free to play, tons of content, customizable heros, tons of quests and missions, lots of skill variations and builds i.e. Ranger/necromancer, ranger/mesmer, ranger/monk, ranger/warrior, ranger/assassin, ranger/dervish, ranger/ritualist, ranger/paragon, ranger/elementalist, or vice versa. Try it out before guild wars 2 comes out. They also has pretty damn cool armor.

Well i just popped into Istaria after many years and the archer class is one of the best i've ever seen, each spell can effectively be  seen for instance you fire a default arrow and the arrow is seen in the mob very nicely done, as is longshot which arcs in a starry line over to the mob none of that pew pew and loads of numbers nonsense.

Also create a free account and u can play as a human for free forever, also a 14 day full trial  enables all content so u can play a dragon and the other races so it's a win win situation image
