Turbine has released details (including a release date!) and screenshots for Dungeons & Dragons Online's upcoming Update 5: Rise of the Guilds.

As the name would imply, Update 5 is focused squarely on guilds, and will include the previously mentioned Guild Leveling system, as well as guild bases in the form of snazzy new Airships which can be customized to your guilds liking, and even include tons of amenities such as taverns, rest shrines, auctioneers, etc.

Not part of a guild? That's alright, Update 5 will also bring with it the new "Carnival of Shadow" adventure pack, which includes four new dungeons centered on the the eponymous Carnival of Shadows circus, a circus of dangerous freaks you probably don't want to bring your kids to.

There's even more to Update 5, so be sure to check out the full details here. New screenshots can also be found in our DDO gallery.

Update 5: Rise of the Guilds is set to go live on June 28.

Not sure I like the ship design.....the whole airship fantasy thing has been done to death....I'll hold out for NWN Online.

^^ Airships are iconic to the Eberron world -- it's not some feature  Turbine simply pulled out of nowhere.  And the ships themselves are designs straight from the D&D Eberron sourcebook.

    I think it's brilliant actually.

Carnival of Shadows? You mean these guys?  Or are they pre-existing in the D&D universe?

It's likely an adaptation of Nicolas Logue's D&D/Piazo module Carnival of Tears.  That's my guess anyway.

Right there with you on The Spelljammer flashbacks. Same thing happened when I played The Chronicles of Spellborn too.  It would be nice if there was a fully realized D&D mmo with..not only multiple servers..but multiple themes. Like Spelljammer ..Dark Sun...Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms..and Ravenloft. Each with dedicated servers..and perhaps travel hubs to eachother's realms. Oh well...I can dream right?

A quick Google search of "Eberron" will tell you all you need to know.  I stopped playing D&D about 30 years ago, but I've always read the novels.  My only experience with Eberron was the books.  The world setting itself was, I believe, the winner of the "create a world" contest WotC (or maybe it was still TSR) had held.  The airships are *very much* part of the universe and it looks like they did a great job on the visual.

Of course they *are* somewhat derivative of Spelljammer as, Im sure, the creator of Eberron was a huge D&D fan which would be why he "created a world" and entered said contest.  Derivative of Spelljammer is a good thing, IMO.

If I remember right, the first scene of the first Eberron book actually takes place on one of these ships.
