discuss it here so more people get a chance to see it. until the site gets and official news story up
Lotro just became the greatest F2p game ever.
I honestly didnt think lotro was doing that badly.
oh well... gl with the f2p.
I guess ill install it and play it on and off in the summer.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Mh, I'm a lifetimer, for me this is a bad move.
Very nice. Be interesting to see how they handle the 'adventure packs' concept as that works well with DDO.

I could be wrong but the way I read the article if you have a subscriotion ( i have to assume that includes lifetimers) you will get perks including a monthly payout of 500 points for the shop, so I wouldn't consider it a loss for the lifers.
I'm not sure it will be too bad for lifers, according to the release info, they will be permanantly treated as monthy subscribers.

Looks I was just in time to sell my life-time subscription account on eBay
Don't need to assume... it is witten down clearly in the annoucement
I'm in a bit of a pickle though.. I'm a found and pay 10 USD per month, but I think my last term will be concluded in 2 months time. I don't know if I should pay for another 6 months... if I don't, I'll not get any VIP privileges when the F2P starts.
Anyhow, I welcome this decision, since I am paying currently for FE, and don't wish to maintain 2 fully paid subs at the same time either.!

Confirming what many of us suspected, sub numbers have been in decline with few new players joining so this move will definitely bring in much needed new blood.
Can't say I'm crazy about the new LOTRO Store option, have to wait and see how much impact it has on the overall game play.
Who knows, I might even stop back in since its free and take a look around.

I found the combat kind of lack-luster and uninteresting last time I tried.
Any recommendations on a class with a little more 'life' to it? Something good and useful in both solo and large/small group PvE.
Well one thing is sure.... we can say goodbye to empty starting areas soon

Oh look, more evidence that the devs have no clue what the player base wanted/wants. But whatever, the new blood will end up paying through the nose, and those of us who played when the game was decent will move on.
I will continue to pay a sub and become a VIP, my main worry is that they make sure that one of the best RP servers in any mmorpg "Laurelin" stays the best RP server, i really don't want it flooded with idiots.
Personally, i think they should keep that server as a VIP server.,

So who are you to say what the playerbase want/need? I have been playing LotrO since beta and this is the best news ever imo.
This means more players ---> more money for turibne ----> more content for LotrO ---> and repeat.
Players dont want that?
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
It's not that players don't want that - It's more the fact that, given it's free, every little idiot player will come online and start messing about (See just about ever other F2P game out there) - Not least of all, spammers!
While this will inject some much needed "young blood" into the mix, it's that certain part of the gene-pool that sometimes we don't actually want! (Especially for a game with a loyal fanbase as LoTRO)
Still - Nothing anyone can do now (least of all, like myself, whine about it) - It's done now, and we'll have to see if the results are more positive than negative! Fingers crossed.
I will live forever, or die trying!
You've got a point, excuse me for doing what everyone else, including yourself, does and saying my wants as what the group wants.
Turbine lost their way ages ago, I'm not the only player who left because of it. Destroying the uniqueness of classes like the burglar (converting them from utility to half assed dps), throwing out progression and regular updates in favor of LI grinding, introducing a skirmish system, that albeit fun, has no rewards that make it worth yet another grind, and don't even get me started on the ridiculous Radiance system or the fact that PvMP hasn't been touched in almost 2 years (and no, I don't consider upping the monster player's levels as an update). But in the end, it doesn't matter. I don't pay for the game anymore, and they will see a profit from the new players coming in, so what does my opinion matter in the end.
It's not doing that badly.
They essentially saw a huge boost in profits for ddo. Given that LOTRO has so many more subs they are banking on an exponential bit of growth.
And again, this is why WB bought them, to capitalize on online purchases in games.
This is not a move to save anything. This is a move to rake in more money.

Actually Steefle said they were working to do this 2 years ago. Really all I have to say is "it took them long enough"

Eurogamer: Do you think there's room for other business models in LOTRO's future?
Jeffrey Steefel: I think so... There are some things about the way that we built the game that would allow us to try some different business models. For people that want to have a more casual relationship with the game, and just have fun a couple of hours, a couple of times a week, right now I think we have a difficult value proposition. They're paying a premium price to get a whole bunch more than they actually want. So, maybe there's room to satisfy those people in a slightly different way.
This is a franchise that's going to continue for years and years and years, and there's no way that the singular, monolithic, USD 14.95 a month subscription model is going to last for years and years and years all by itself. I think the answer is, it has to change.
Nah, the Warden is king.

Being a Spartan myself I do enjoy the prospect of shield + spear and such. And I've heard the gambit system is quite fun.
Yes Warden is what you are looking for! Have alot faster feel than the other classes and the gambit system is very interesting.

I recently bought a lifetime sub, back in February. Today, at first when I heard the news, I almost paniced. I went and read the VIP "package" and while I will still wait to see how this plays out, I actually think this will be an even BETTER deal than when the game was just your normal PTP fare. I'll get points each month until FTP goes live, provided I log in at least once, which I do anyway. And then getting points for all sorts of other stuff, this will make that dreaded "I have to pay for the expansions now" blues go away, since I will be able to get them practically for free.
On a side note, now that a Major PTP is doing this model, and if it is successful, which I very much think it will be, this may change the face of MMO payment systems from here on out. This could be good...or it can be a catch 22 as we've seen with the numerous amount of horrible FTP games out there. BUT...none of those games offers this rounded system of FTP to a subscription game that Turbine has cooked up. Maybe it will make future FTPs actually better than they are.
Something to think about. I also, wonder, which game developer is going to have the cojones to copy this model. I can think of quite a few games that would benefit from it.
Vanguard
Warhammer
Age of Conan
World of Warcraft
...
hell, every MMO could go this route and I think more people would come into the genre. Very interesting development here. Can't wait to see what happens.
I think LotRO will see a bunch of new players just because it'll be free. They will come in, mess up the house alittle but then they'll leave either because they don't have a clue to the IP, won't like the combat or reading all the quest plots. Those that remain will be the one's that will adapt to the games norm's.
Pretty much the same as happened with DDO. Also I haven't noticed any DDO spammers so I guess I've been lucky with my play times.
