It is still an average mmo no matter what model they choose but if they think the f2p will be their savior think again. There is no way people are still going to keep playing Lotro when we will be getting superior mmos like Guild Wars 2 and The Old Republic coming soon, also just about everyone who is subscribed to WoW will not jump ship just because Lotro is now f2p. This is ajust a quick cash thing before the servers completely empty when GW2 and TOR hit the shelves.
Why does everyone think that it's all about playing the newest shiney? Did you ever think that not everyone wants to play GW2 or that some won't play TOR because why it's SW it's not SW? As for WoW, while they're both fantasy games, they're not interchangable.
You could have used your agruement back when DDO went F2p and it probably would have held better water than just because D&D was more a a niche game. F2p LotRO will appeal to those that played before and weren't getting their $15.00 of fun a month (as with me and in fact that's how I was with DDO too, wasn't worth a sub cost to me) but will play it now and will end up spending $ in the future to unlock zones. And it will appeal to those that always wanted to try the game (having liked the movies - that not the games based on those but more of the younger set know the title from those than the books) but didn't want to shell out for a box.
F2p has been a big cash boost for DDO. I'm even willing to say that without going F2p DDO probably would have been shut down or wither on the vine. Instead the game is more alive and robust than it has been in years. I see no reason the same won't hold true for LotRO.

Yes that is very true. However I have to point out the servers were already empty. The lies that turbine has been invovled about how bad things were in LOTROwith their sub base has now been exposed. They had to go this way to save an already dying game.
A game devoid of new content, and a foolish dev staff who has lost their way. It is nice to know that they got a new producer and let Jeff go.
The writing is on the wall. Both lotro and DDO are niche games, and anybody who says there will be 1 million players playing lotro after it goes f2p, needs to go get an evaluation.
Unless turbine can step up to the plate with lotro and come up with a lot of new exciting stuff, F2p is not going to do anything, and that was already the problem, lack of a dev staff who knew what to do, and kept running in circles.
I don't know why many people here are complaining without doing more research on what they have to offer. As a LotrO player from the beginning, as a founder, and a lifetime member, my money is well spent for I have played that long... Even so, for those who just got lifetime accounts not too long ago, it is still equivalent to paying monthly if you have paid at least a year, and especially with this new change, you get even more incentives vs. to just paying regularly by month.
For those who complain about doing things solo and reaching a point where you have to group up to finish the quest, "HELLO! LotR is based on what is called a 'Fellowship'." Turbine giving the players chances to do most part solo was nice enough... and mainly these "Fellowship/group" quests are the main storyline... if you wanted to solo; you could do that by going and doing "side" quests. Turbine has of course made it where Vol. 1, solo players can finish the whole volume without the need of a fellowship. This gives HUGE power to solo players, and especially with this new model F2P. They will experience the BEST FREE TO PLAY MMORPG to date. You don't even have to pay a cent as a free player and yet you will still be able to solo up to lvl50, volume 1 (Shadows of Angmar).
All-in-all, this is a huge success and plus to all lotro players who are lifetime members (since nothing's changed, other than getting 'freebies' for making the game this good)... the only BIGGEST concern is that since it is F2P, it draws all types of audience, in which the community may suffer from that (but who knows for sure?). Regardless, my 2 cents is that if you really want a RICH experience when you join this F2P model for the first time when it comes out, is to find yourself a nice/good KIN (Guild) that you "FIT" into... meaning you can just chill and hang out with them. Or if you simply don't care about interacting or socializing, or joining to do other fun/crazy stuff like "raids to fight the Balrog, etc", then you can surely just play solo all the way to lvl 50 and just miss out on those things.
I am already planning my recruitment for new players and "walking" them through the game for those who wants a tour or kin to join.
PS - I won't be responding to this thread as it is going to grow HUGE as it already is... feel free to send me an email if you like, as that I do check.
PS- for those who keeps saying it's an "Already dying game" and this is how they are saving it, you're wrong. I'll leave it at that.
I will laugh at that statement. I know you hit the forums over in lotro land then came over here to say that.
I been around sinc MOE middle earth online, and I can tell you I have watched the numbers on brandywine dwindle down.
When MOM launched we averaged 3000 to 4000 easy on any given day when you did a /who count. Now days your luck on a Friday night to see more than a 1000. and GLFF and some of the allies channels last night were lit up and folks are not happy.
All I can say is it has been a hotly debated topic in the lotro forums folks go back and forth. I have been seeing the topic of my server x is a ghost town come up more and more often, followd by the comments well my server is not, and then watch the thread get locked and pruned.
So yes they are trying to save the game, and use the same business model that saved DDO, after all it seams to be a huge cash cow for them.
Also to say those of us who have a lifetime make out like bandits. Well thats wrong too. Yes we get access to the stuff we have now, however going forward your still going to have to earn points to buy the new expansions and books with. I am sure that the 500 free points will never be enough to really get you anything.
That bothers me tho Sovrath .. "They can spend additonal money if they want to" Those with Lifetime subs should never have to put out 1 dime for anyhting , evrything that is developed should be included int the "Lifetime " (in accordance with the original agreement)sub they paid for IMO...
Hence why they get 500 points a month free to buy those things.
So you are paying the monthly fee for ViP access , your money of course is being used to develop new content, that the 500 TP may or may not (most likely not) be able to buy , So in the end you may need/want to purchase more than the 500 TP can afford and pay out of pocket for content that your origianl sub payed to develop............sounds kinda ugly huh
PS- for those who keeps saying it's an "Already dying game" and this is how they are saving it, you're wrong. I'll leave it at that.
I will laugh at that statement. I know you hit the forums over in lotro land then came over here to say that.I been around sinc MOE middle earth online, and I can tell you I have watched the numbers on brandywine dwindle down.
Then let me laugh at your statement. Though you may see some "numbers" go down from servers, other servers are growing very high, and why is this? Because many, MANY of them transfer between server, whether that's due to PVP or because of their significant other/friends/family being in another server, or just because they're tired of being around lunatics that may be lurking around... (lol). So your statement has no "fact" in itself, and no one can really provide "numbers" to accurately see the change in servers to servers, rather than knowing yourself it decreases in yours and increases in others.
When MOM launched we averaged 3000 to 4000 easy on any given day when you did a /who count. Now days your luck on a Friday night to see more than a 1000. and GLFF and some of the allies channels last night were lit up and folks are not happy.
True, my first reaction was "unhappy" too, UNTIL I read the new changes made over and over and wrote down the pros/cons about it, realizing I was over-reacting, and so did others that read more than just the small statements made that it was changing into a F2P model
All I can say is it has been a hotly debated topic in the lotro forums folks go back and forth. I have been seeing the topic of my server x is a ghost town come up more and more often, followd by the comments well my server is not, and then watch the thread get locked and pruned.
Your last sentence saying you've been seeing the topic of your server is a ghost time followed by comments that your server or other servers are not just explained what I wrote above. Transfers of servers is generally going to more "popular" servers now as other servers go down... perhaps this will showcase that more of the new players may go into that server while some of the older players such as "us" may be in "bigger" ones that are growing.
so to say those of us who have a lifetime make out like bandits. Well thats wrong too. You make it sound like we get new expansions for free in the beginning... wrong! NOW we can get it for free being a lifetime member. Looks like you're just pointing out you want MORE points so get you "anything" you want. Don't over look it...
I too have been around since the beginning, and I plan on staying for a pretty DANG LONG TIME... until the community of F2P ruins it just like WoW (Oh no! now people are gonna 'steam' about this last sentence).
PS- for those who keeps saying it's an "Already dying game" and this is how they are saving it, you're wrong. I'll leave it at that.
I will laugh at that statement. I know you hit the forums over in lotro land then came over here to say that.
Wrong. But I bet you did. Overall it's simply how you feel and your opinion, as everything is subjected to mine. Feel free to leave due to how you feel, but don't try to force others to not join simply because you do not like the new model. The new model isn't for everyone, and for those who have lifetime and just complain about wanting more and more and more, get over it.
Personally, I feel sorry for the poor sods who paid out for a lifetime sub. C'est la vie.
But nothing changes for them. They don't have to pay a monthly fee and retain vip status which is essentially the same as a monthly subscriber.
The only thing that changes for monthly subscribers and lifetime sub holders is that they get free points each month to spend in the turbine store and can spend additional money if they want to buy a cosmetic item or whatnot.
The only thing that this changes is that players who were not inclined to pay a subscription have options to either pay a la cart or pay nothing, have somewhat limited options but can get to lvl 50 without spending a dime.
That bothers me tho Sovrath .. "They can spend additonal money if they want to" Those with Lifetime subs should never have to put out 1 dime for anyhting , evrything that is developed should be included int the "Lifetime " (in accordance with the original agreement)sub they paid for IMO...
Those with lifetime subs still had to pay for the Mines of Moria expansion, Siege of Mirkwood expansion, and the adventure pack (if they chose to). Lifetime sub doesn't give you access to all content in the game, it just means no monthly access fee.
"Dungeons & Dragons Online right now is about eight percent of the market, LOTRO is number eight in the marketplace with five percent. Combined, thirteen percent of MMO gamers are playing Turbine games."

The Adventure Packe and Mirkwood were a package deal for lifetime accounts. I was a multi-month subscriber and got Mirkwood for free and bought the AdPack (2 char slots, shared storage, account mount, run buff cloak) for $20. The only people that had to pay for both were month by month subscribers.
Point is... your lifetime subscription doesn't mean you get everything in the game for free. You still had to pay for content before, and you'll still have to pay for it after the game goes F2P. It just means you don't pay a monthly fee.

Its sad people look at this as "Great for us players". Its NOT. See as the game stands now. You can play for just $10 a month(sup for 3month or more). So now they change it to F2P with a cash shop. Want EXTRA's? Gonna cost you. Most will be spending more then just $10..you loss.. they win. Pay for "VIP" yet do you know how many will spend MORE on the cash shop..so you spend more then you ever would in the long run. They could CARELESS about the player. Its MONEY MONEY MONEY.
As for Dungeons & Dragaons.. why do people read "since going to free to play 1mil" like that means.. they have 1mil players? Like Obama has the OIL spill under control. You tried D&D and you dont play anymore.. yep you are part of that 1mil!
WB did not do anything new here. They copied someone else to make a buck off ANYONE willing to give them money. Same kind of people that buy a $300k house thats worth 100K. Your money do as you please but man.. Dont just toss your money away..
They could CARELESS about the player. Its MONEY MONEY MONEY.

That's every game company in existence. If you think for one second that there is a company out there that builds a game just to please its fans (regardless of what they say), you are seriously deluded.
Games are products. Game companies sell products to make money and the extent of their CARING only extends to you as long as you're PAYING.
You got that right! ++kudos for you!
