I too am one that really enjoyed old UO. I guess it's not to bad now, but nothing like the old days.
My current MMOG PvP favorites are Guild Wars, and well the UO thats not supposed to exist but does so I play it and yea, so google it and I'm sure you'll find something.
Not to hijack the thread or anything but it seems most of us have played UO Rennaisiance/pre. Do you guys think some developers will ever get a brain and take the old UO update it with some new graphics engines and make a actual good MMO where players can create instead of being force fed crappy quests and instances?
Originally posted by Pyke With what is currently out, which game do you feel has the best PvP of all the MMORPGs?
Anarchy Online
It has everything no other PvP mmorpg has:
- PvP for landcontrol
- Lower level players can kill off much, much, higher level players
- When you and/or your guild log off, you can still protect your gains (land).
- AO has sooo many ways of getting hurt (poison, radioactive, hot, cold, and much more) that no one can ever have the perfect armor or weapon.
- There are 3 major player factions all battling each other. Any faction can take over other faction's land. It is possible for 1 faction to wipe out the other 2 factions and take all their land!
With its PvP for landcontrol, players can litterally control most of the entire game world. And this will show up on the game world map! There are areas unsafe depending which side you are on.
Anarchy Online IS a terrible game all the way around. Terrible and boring gameplay and terrible graphics. One thing this game does have going for it: some depth. lol
Once again, RYL is a player vs. player MMORPG, and is very good indeed.
(Yes, it is still enjoyable watching a fully buffed, brainamputated tank getting asskicked by a 'lone-soldier' monk )
2. MxO (Beta)
Which I played for over 2 weeks straight. (I never had as many adrenaline-rushes in a MMORPG as in MxO PvPs.)
I know that some have the impression that the combatmode is far from "solid" and just a "poor/buggy SWG-rip-off". Well I can only tell you there is no recently released MMORPG with so much immersion/control in a (PvP-) fight). Yes it first feels awkward and out-of-control but thats rather a sign of over-familiarisation with all the EQ-style-copycats (except WoW which was at least able to combine the best elements to a enjoyable hybrid).
With some fine-tuning it may be the most entertaining, and fun-induced combat-system you can possibly imagine for such a game. (Btw. do you know of any MMORPG where you can actually see the impact of attacks and are able to beat players of higher levels (specialised on "Soldier" / "Material Arts") just with combat-tactics ? )
3. Anarchy Online
I simply had to add a third entry so nobody notices how hard I try to hype MxO.
The PvP makes the storyline, effects the economy and dictates who nominaly controls the outter regions of space. It is far removed from the speedy nature pvp of fps's, has a somewhat heavy death penalty, but is a hell of alot of fun, and really gets the adreneline going on. PvP in eve is mostly engaged in my alliances and corporations squaring off at jumpgates and stations, where mixes of ship types and combat capabilities mimic modern combined arms fleets. Voice coms are a must to control these large groups of ships and also like fleet combat, intelligence is key to knowing how to react to the enemy. Like naval warfare, fighting in space is heavily based on mobility; you continue to move until you can bring your force to bear while suffering little in returned damage.
I would make claims about EvE's pvp compares to others but, i have to say its the only pvp mmo i have played, but i cant see the others having the long term strategic implications that one finds in EvE, likely due to the heavy emphasis on player generated storyline.
And my opinions are after playing most of these games to the full extent for PvP:
1) Ultima Online (By far the best adrenaline rush/"GOD DAMNIT I DIED" i've had)
2) Shadowbane (We used to have each others cell phone numbers if our city was being attacked at night, which was fun for the first 2 nights, after that I decided to leave the game, due to being tired :P)

You intrigue me sir, can you elaborate about the "UO thats not supposed to exist"......?
No level BS..No your gear makes or breaks you..no Restrictions, You kill him everything on his corpse is yours if you so choose..If you truely felt like being an asshat you could res him only to kill him again...It came down to one simple thing..Either you had the skills, or you did not..In uo it was Put up or Shutup, no little smacktards talking trash they couldnt backup.
Nothing I have ever played since has even come close to touching that experience...And lucky me I Found a Freeshard running those exact settings...God its great.

More than likely they are referring to a Free Shard. Basically a UO Server you can connect to and play the game for free. You still need the client though.
You all have to be kidding me. WWII Online takes the cake hands down. What other game has: - Gameplay that is completely PvP - Air, Land, Sea, and Foot weaponry - Players working together to form two huge teams that are led my players - No newbie arcade style, all simulated first person - PvP on the strategic level (Bombing factories to slow enemy research) - The biggest no-zones gameworld... all up for grabs - None of the "story" is dictated... all from players fighting for their cause
There is no other game that is worthy of comparison in my opinion.
This games pvp gives you the best heart pumping adrenaline.
While fighting you can accualy dodge certain kinds of war magic with your own keyboard.
you can dodge arrows with strafe.
it all takes skill (stats) a good template and menovering.
Also the best part! is that when you kill someone, you can take some of their loot, including some stuff they are wearing. unless you have "death items" <--high valued items drop first and if you have enuff that's all you'll drop but you can fetch a good price. but same can happen to you if you die
it's my favorite out of every mmorpg and i've played them all.
got a 60 tauren warrior in wow. the pvp was ok but not as intense becuase you get virtualy nothing out of it. game is boring now. i've played all the rest of the mmorpg's daoc, eve etc. even those crazy asian anime ones that are worse than getting cought masterbaiting if someone sees you playing them.
nothing beats Asherons call pvp. new expansion is comming too in about 2-3 months. cant wait.
I completely agree with and second Teutonik. I was fairly surprised no-one had brought it up earlier.
AC:DT is the best PvP experience, bar none. It has just the right level of player skill and character skill to keep things interesting.
And while yes, it is a 'level' game, the levels are not nearly as important as one might think. It is primarily skill based game, where levels are only an indicator of the overall XP learnt. Skills and stats can be raised at all times provided you have the XP to spend on them at that particular moment.
It can start out rough for new players, which I think is it's major curse and why not many new players rollup very often. But by 60+ (very easy to get) You can do exceedingly well in group PvP, at 80+ (also fairly easy to get) If you're good enough you can go toe to toe with the best, and prevail.
Basically that means even if you're not yet 'uber' with the player skill side of things, you do at least still have a /chance/, albeit not a good one. Not where in many other level games, where the levels themselves are the be all and end all, and no matter what you do, if you're lower level, you're screwed.
On my main character, at level 80 I went 1v1 with someone with an 'actual' level of 212 or so. And won. It was a hell of a fight, very hard, fighting for my life the whole time, as this player was not only higher level, but also good with their character. Fight went on for over 15 mins before finally had a real opening, got him low enough to make him attempt to dive for cover and heal, managed to land my next hit just before his heal went off.
And now higher, level 105 or so - pretty much stopped bothering to level here - have many times engaged in 1vsMany combat (where I am the one) and if not outright win, at least give them a fair run for my money. ie; In a 1v4 battle I had, where I was 101 at the time, and the others displayed as 126, I took 3 of those buggers down before dieing to the last. Was my fault, didn't keep track of where the last guy was, and he shot a war into my back before could evade it properly.
Still one hell of an adrenaline pumping fight though.
Comments
Used to be old UO now i would say (of the games ive played) DAOC.
Yea I figured that the answers I get the most would be SB and Daoc.... been there done that....
Old UO was definately the best... too bad its new UO now
Guildwars. And dont start crap that its "not a MMORPG".

Meridian 59 FTW, was the first and has always been the best.

Hey at least I didn't mention Planetside ; ops.
Greetings,
Mr. Bxxx
As no one else mentioned EvE i thought i would.

Ultima Online Pre T2A hands down..

How about the fact that it isn't a PvP game... It's a PvE game with some PvP options on the side.
Old UO was THE PvP game. The end.
Shadowbane is a much better PVP game than UO ever was
Shadowbane is the only PVP game that has a purpose to PVP
You all have to be kidding me. WWII Online takes the cake hands down.

Lineage 2 is the game which have been made for start WW3 online againt the Chinese/Korean/Japanese/wtv guys!
I'd have to say Asherons call top down (period)
