NC Soft must be insane.
After reading the Aion site and deciding I'd give the game a try I ride over to Gamestop and get a copy. By noon today I have the game installed. I create account, etc... Hit the update button and wander off to take a nap. Come back 3 hours later to learn the last patch to 1.9 is 9 flipping gigs. It's going to be another 8-10 hours before it all downloads & we have a 8 meg downsteam pipe?
Had the morons at NC Soft just said, Download full client here to save yourself a DAY or MORE of downloading we'd have done so. A more incompetent way of operating I have never imagined. Even at that they are messing up. The torrent only has 2 seeds. Wanna download 9 gigs at 24kbs? Non-subscriber speeds at Fileplanet were all 70-100kbs tops. Gamer'shell was worse than that. Spent more money we should have had to spend in the 1st place to get a fileplanet subscription and in 11 hours the flipping game client will be downloaded, patched & ready to play.
Tomorrow, when I get to hopefully PLAY the game I bought & installed TODAY the game proves to be worth this kind of crap. If its not any good, I think I will start sharing my experience with federal, state & local business organizations who oversee this kind of thing. Businesses like this will surely keep feeding consumers crap sandwiches as long as we keep eating them.

Torrent + fast connection = success!
Tried the torrent. Only got 24-26 kbs and we have a fast connection. Getting 350-500 kbs from fileplanet with dips in the 250's.
Try installing regular L2 without all the patches. Tell me how long you will be waiting then. Plus, remember, change your password often. Only get robbed and hacked in time if you're not careful. Plus I would advise you to go through paypal or some other form of payment besides direct credit or debit card.
You have been warned.
When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?
Fascinating info, Erstok. Don't know what it has to do with this thread.....
I bought the digital copy back at release. Just reinstalled and only took me about 3 hours total. Speed fluctuated between 550-650 the entire time. You may want to check your connection.
NEWS FLASH! PAYING THE SUB IN F2P = NO DIFFERENCE THAN P2P GAMES!
Why the hell can't the whiners comprehend this?
Oh it has to due with the fact I am giving you fair warning once you are in the game and nothing more. NCsoft isn't to great with patching when it comes to downloading old game clients. Then again. SOE was just as bad back in the day. Just to play the trial back in the day took 24+ hours just to update the game to even test it for a few minutes. Gah.

Fixed.
Checked the connection 1st thing. Restarted modem & time capsule router. Everything is screaming along as usual. Getting download now of patched game client running 450-600. Using the NC Soft Launcher/updater I was getting a whopping 200-250.
This isn't new for MMOs, not at all. If you're going to buy an MMO, at this juncture it's best to just put your registration key into your account and download the client. You'll get the most up to date base-client from the company itself, and patching will be mild at best.
Also: The 1.9 patch JUST came out, and is a pretty massive update so you're going to be downloading the nine gigs no matter what. No boxed copy you buy at a store is going to carry 1.9.
And if you think Aion is bad, don't try to install World of Warcraft, even without the two expansions. Patching that is an all day project, usually involving going to various download websites to get the patches that the Blizzard Torrent downloads slowly on.
I bought Lord of the Rings Online, got the collector's edition for $1 online last year, and it was so old that it didn't even work. I had to uninstall and redownload the newer client from Turbine's website.

Who will promptly laugh at you and tell you to go home. Nothing being done here that is even close to illegal, or out of the ordinary for most MMOs.
Feel free to share with were I suggested something illegal was happening? I specifically said "business organizations" not law enforcement. Better Business Bureau will be a good place to start I think.
Please note that you have an eight megabit downstream, which isn't much at all, not an eight megabyte downstream. At 8 mb/s, 9 GB should, indeed, take 20-21 hours.
Eight megabits is one megabyte.
As for the size of the patch being unusual: it's simply not. Unless they're happening once a week or something.
The night before last I decided to download Aion again and return to playing as I used to have a really slow internet speed and I digitally bought the game. Now I have uber internet and I can vouch for NCSoft's Launcher. I averaged at 1 mb/s using the launcher. It's not the Launcher's problem.
What is the OP crying about? using fileplanet and paying for that as well?
Uhm.... I just got it and used the download pc client and launcher from NCsoft site and I downloaded it all in like 4-5 hours and had 600-1100 download speed in that launcher and my connection aint all that good... I got a 6 meg down line..... Should check your own connection or try the actual game launcher instead of downloading game from other sites lol
Sadly after all that... the only good news is after 3-4 weeks of playing the uninstall only takes minutes.
I have had great download speeds, but still getting errors. What do I mean by great download speeds? Less than an hour to download. But that is great when I have had to download 4 times and still can not play.
It had been terrible with Aion all the way. Getting the original game downloaded took me weeks, since all the possible connections back them were outright insane bad! Then the endless waits to log in during the first few months... And I see they have not learned at all. No way in hell I ever playing one of their games again. My sympathy to the OP.
Not sure why you would have a 9 gig patch. I just did a fresh reinstall from disc yesterday, and the patch was only 4 gigs.
I patched at over 900 KBs. Not everyone had this problem.
