I'm typically a tank or healer in any game I play.  I just don't find DPS to be all that interesting though I understand the appeal.

I'm interested in the Warrior who would then become the Templar.

Anything I should know?

Also, is there a choice of PVP/PVE servers in the game?

Any difference in choosing a race when it comes to being a Warrior/Templar?

Are Templar's in demand or are the servers overrun with them?  I LOVE group/raiding play and want something useful/viable in end-game raiding/group play.  Is this any good for that?

Thanks so much for your time!

Templars do well in pvp. I'm unsure if they are needed but they can certainly be an asset in a pvp party and of course in any raids.

    There are no pvp/pve servers.

All servers have pvp and pve. PvP takes place in sevreral ways.

There are rifts that open into the opposing side where you can go through and "invade" the opposing side. Or the abyss which is a sort of free for all pvp area where there are fortresses than can be taken.

I can't speak to any differences from one side or another regarding classes.

The nice thign about this game is that healers can do well in pvp as well.

Great, thanks for answering my questions!  Based on your post, it sounds as though PVP is a "choice"?  Is it a gank-fest while leveling and such?  I do like to PVP a bit but am more of a PVE kind of guy.

PVE is consentual up to a certain point.  All the best gears are obtained through pvp.   And AION lacks content,  it's still a huge grind after level 30 even if the latest patch reduced it a little bit.

Some would say that it is more of a pvp game and some would say that it was a pvp/pve game that didn't quite get the pve right.

It's supposed to be a hybrid. PvP is not exactly a choice but it can be. To a point.

Over the course of time the opposing faction will invade your side. You might see a message indicating that a rift has oppened. Then again, you might not and you might be surprised to find yourself being mowed down. you really don't lose much except some abyss points.

Each side has two areas that are completely just pve but there is a gap, at least prior to the last update, where you run out of material in the mid 20's and really can't come back until about 40. So of course you will need to visit other places in the world.

My thought is try it. I wasn't an ffa pvp guy but loved my time in Lineage 2. I will say that next time you might consider doing research before buying only because if you are more of a pve guy you might find yourself in pvp heaven. Better to know beforehand.

It's a good game and has some really nice pve stories woven in the "go kill x of y" quests. There are quests that are not of this type but more often than not you will find these types of quests which might get tedious. But again read the quest text.

if you are used to easy leveling this game won't grant it. but as compared to actual hardcore games the leveling is not very difficult. In Lineage 2 I played for over 4 years but never even saw level cap. This game I went to lvl 46 with reasonable time spent in the game only to take a break and get caught up in LOTRO and also have to spend some time in Vanguard.

I like the game but if you are predominantly a pve person you might eventually get tired of it. Or you might find you like the thrill of it. If the wife of a friend who had never played an mmo could get excited over seeing the enemy then Ithink with the right attitude you might learn to like it.

Hey!  Wow, great post!  Wonderful details.

I did do "some" research and saw that the game is indeed as you described; PVEPVP

This sounds A LOT like WAR where you do leveling through quests and various PVE but can take "fortresses" in semi-FFA zones.

I think I will enjoy that as I did in WAR.

My perception of the game based on the reviews I read seemed to say "It's PVE/PVP but you have a choice".  I will quote and provide the source below:

"While the story is largely fluff, it does set the stage for Aion's main gameplay mechanic: PvPvE (Player vs. Player vs. Environment). While PvPvE largely focuses on faction-based PvP combat, it still manages to bring in plenty of PvE to add variety, and ensures that all playstyles will get some attention. However, despite its seamless and polished integration of both these systems, Aion still remains a conservative game."

    and

"PvP seems to be rather well balanced. All of the servers have fairly even populations between the two sides, thanks to NCSoft prioritizing the issue. (This created a major headache for people attempting to get onto certain servers at launch.) Some classes are noticeably weak in 1-vs-1 PvP, but there isn't much of that in the Abyss anyway, and all classes seem to be well balanced for group-based PvP. Oh, and yes, you can fly anywhere in the Abyss, and yes, it does create a 3D battlefield. Staying far above your prey can allow for easy ambushes, and spreading your wings can make for fast escapes, and easier kiting. There is no question in my mind that Aion is very much focused on creating fun PvP.

However, if PvP isn't your thing, you can actually skip it. You don't have to go into the Abyss, and even if you do, you can try your best to avoid other players, or to just run instances."

To answer your questions.  The population of templars is not high and I think they are least played class on EU servers (you can check statistics). The problem is, almost all the group content can be tanked better by gladiators (dps warriors) or sometimes even by assassins. By better I mean runs go faster even if they are more risky. There is a lot of posts on templars forums, how they do low dps but don't have anything to balance it. Also grinding groups would prefer setup like glad/sin/cleric (or chanter) because of the killing speed.

In pvp I like a gladiator more than templar (I have both at high levels) because of aoe dmg, knock-downs and high spike dmg.  But it is just my opinion and others will say that a templar can do great dmg in pvp and knock-downs with DH weapon.

When it comes to pvp vs pve Aion is a game where you will be ganked even if you don't want to pvp. Some campaign quests involve the Abyss (pvp region) and you can be killed in your homeland by rifters (people from the opposing faction who teleported to your land). You can level on the only pve map from levels 20 to maybe 30 and from 44/45 to 50 (and before level 20 there is no pvp).

There is not a lot of instances but there are some outdoor elite areas. If you like you can play in groups, you can go from lev 16/17 to 50 on group content but it would be boring (to much repetition). I think patch 2.0 will bring more pve content and maybe even templars will be happy tanks again.

Just to add to that that you can solo-quest/grind to the fabled "endgame" as well, though it's even more boring than grouping. Crafting gives exp as well. Spice is the variety of life, it takes a bit of everything to enjoy it to the max. From normal quests to campaign quests, to gathering/crafting, dungeon crawls / outdoor elite areas, rifting and fort sieges, working the auction house etc., It shouldn't be hard to diversify.

There's lots of stuff to work towards, and almost everything costs considerable kinah and takes time. Game as a whole is slow-paced (like all MMOs should be), and it's not a fast-food MMO like most of the recent dross.

Just a tip: Take your time, enjoy the journey and don't rush to level cap. Set yourself short-term goals, diversify your game play, join a cool legion, play with friends and make new ones, play an MMO the way it's meant to be played.

    Have fun. :)

If you want PvE then this is the game for you. Whenever PvP happens you can just run away because templars don't die.

Another thing you should know; oh it's a grind and there are no raids sorry, instances are boring and give no reward.

Thanks.  A well-rounded and thoughtful response.  Lots of advice that could be applicable to any game or even.. real life.

I made a priest and have had about 1 hour of game time so far.  I'm going to play tonight for a few hours.  The artistic direction is good... the player/monster models are GREAT but I find that the textures in the game are... dull.  Getting close to any object/ground/landscape is a bit sore on the eyes.  I'm not a stickler for graphics though I assumed I might have my cake and eat it too with a game that just came out last year.  I haven't much to say with my tiny 1 hour of game time.  Thanks again for your great reply.

    You have fun too :)

Hmmm I dropped $40 on it and I have a month with that.  I'm giving it a shot... so far I am not.. "impressed".

It feels like a "Free To Play" Asian game with maybe.. a bit more polish on it.

I can't get into the world.. I don't feel it.  It feels cold and distant.  I'm standing in front of this big colorful tree in the middle of a lake named "Tunapre".  The tree is very pretty but... it's leaves/branches don't sway in the wind.. even though the wind is audible.  Plain old trees stick out of the ground yet, they don't disrupt the ground around them... no "mounding" effect or roots around the trees.  They just stuck out of the ground like tooth picks stuck into a piece of painted cardboard. Same with bushes and flowers.. which are scarce.  The ground itself looks.. unrealistic...the grass isn't elevated at all.  Instead it's painted onto the flat floor.

I dunno, I just had expectations about the visuals and such.  I need to give it more time, I can't be pessimistic.  I just expected more with a new game.. not quite "Oblivion" graphics but... I dunno.  Gameplay, it's ALL about gameplay... back to playing.

I haven't been too happy with the game so far.  You level up slowly and therefore gain new skills/actions/abilities at a relatively slow pace.  It feels repeditive for a while.. especially between level 10-15.  In EVE online.. after the short tutorial.. you seriously could do anything and go anywhere... you could become a miner, a pirate, a bounty hunter.. a production guy... a market trader... a hauler.  In WoW by level 15 (something you can obtain in 2-3 hours) you can do quests, battle grounds, instanced 5-man dungeons, crafting, and even achievements.  In Aion.. at level 15 I'm doint quests.. I've always been doing quests.. oh you could do crafting too.. I guess.

The graphics are beautiful but feel... wrong sometimes.  The way trees stick into the ground wihout a mound of dirt or any form of disruption to the flat, and 2-D "grass" on the ground.  (Are we seriously still in the day and age when grass can't be more realistic?)

The water is AWESOME to look at.. totally beautiful.  Love it.  The music is good too. I like it.

I don't like the "asian" feel to the game.  Jumping up and down like a freak because I put a little mana stone into my low-level armor is over doing it.  Screaming out undecipherable words EVERY time I cast a spell is like old school Street Fighter.  You can tell the game is translated because.. while the words are "OK" they don't always fit properly.  Every time you hit a mob (even with a dagger!) the noise produced with each hit is like banging on a drum or even having a gun go off.  It's so over the top that it's not even funny.

You get wings at level 10 which are AWESOME!!  You get so excited.. it's like getting that level 20 mount in World of Warcraft where you think to yourself "Thank god I don't have to run so slow to my quests!!" but then.. you get these AWESOME wings.. and you can't F*$!@#$ use them... and when you DO use them... you get about 20 seconds with them and then you fall out of the sky... the wings have a "power" bar that drains when you use them.... are you kidding me?  WTF is this?  Imagine getting a mount in World of Warcraft or any game for that matter.. and you can ride your horse for about 30 seconds, then it vanishes until your power bar goes up... could you imagine??  I mean, Fallen Earth mounts need food but you can ride them for hours before you need to feed them!  Hell, you can leave your horse standing in the grass and it's food bar goes up while you're off slaughtering.

Even as a paid subscriber, you cannot mail (not even to your own alt!), you cannot whisper, and you cannot talk in any of the "global/local" chat channels until level 10.  This isn't for trial accounts.. this is for PAID accounts.  Wanna ask for help in one of the channels? Nope!  Want to send a whisper thanking that cleric who gave you nice buffs? Nope!  Did you level up to 8 and decide you enjoy playing another class better so you want to send YOURSELF the money you have?  Nope!

I'm still giving it a chance... hell.. I paid for it.  I want to see what instanced groups at level 25ish are like.  I was told it starts at level 25.  (1/2 way through your levels??).  I see lots of people in LFG talking.. so maybe it's worth the wait and the quest grind.

just to adress some posts here, if you think aion is a grind game you are doing it wrong, its not dificult to lvl here and now is even more easy,

also to people saying aion don't have raids, can you tell me what is the diference of raids to grind? you do raids several times for a piece of equip using the same tactics and classes all the time in the same order in the same way, so tell me is not that a damn grind thing?

FOR HONOR, FOR FREEDOM.... and for some money.
