And to think, all the time I spent exercising so that in middle age and beyond I could still "keep up with the kids".. Guess I could have just chugged beer and waited for all the kids to get fat, lazy and out of shape...

Oh well, I guess now, middle age and all, I can say with pride that now all them fat, lazy, out of shape kids have to work to "keep up with the old dude"...

    HAHA  I love it!!!

How's that new FPS treating ya Junior???  How about a 64oz Mtn Dew to wash down that triple baconator...

The trick is to have a wife, family member, or friend to keep you in check. It's hard to say no to your wife when she says, "I'm going for a run. What are you going to do?"

That is easy, you say, "Oh, I'll just be here, dear... have fun."

At which point, you could just be hopelessly lazy and addicted to your game...

    -or-

...you could be hooking up with the girl you just met in your favorite game that does not need to go for runs.

Hey now, I walk/run at least 5 days a week anywhere from 3.4 to 7.5 miles per trip and my at rest pulse rate averages around 60. (and my other health factors are all well under norm.)

So overall I'm not doing too badly for a 52 year old.

There are many "sports*" that require little exercise but don't get criticised as much as video gaming, however this is the media and they love anything shunning video games.

*I deem sport activities as more then just running around kicking a ball for example.

Yeah, us old guys are doin great it seems.. All those years of being told to take care of ourselves, watch what we eat etc.. finally sunk in..

Too bad nobody bothered to tell the next generation.

Maybe if we replaced loading zone splash screens with pictures of the food pyramid, and a picture of what a balanced meal with proper serving portins actually looks like (most people would probably short circuit at the lack of deep fried food on the plate).

    Interesting.

Has anyone else noticed that. compared to non-gamers, they also have far superior vision in terms of movement detection, visual memory, peripheral perception, as well as other sensory capabilities like directional hearing and snap decision making?

     lmao @ triple baconator.

I would like to see a study of avid TV watchers. They would have the bodies of chain smokers and the reflexes of dial-up.

There are many ways to be too sedentary. It is disturbing in general though.

I live and work in a major city where most residents do not drive. Consequently, most people tend to walk/bike/sk8 a lot and very out-of-shape people are rare. Still, I am constantly reminded how big a problem this is for people that don't live places that are conducive to moving under your own power since we have tourists. Almost as telling as their looking at maps and cameras are how amazingly slow they walk, even when they know where they are going. I tore a ligament and was on crutches and had to say 'excuse me' to many tourists since I still walked faster than they did.

Some day I hope that Wii, project natal, and treadmills, and poweglove, gamepad technologies are merged to make a really intricate full body gaming experience. Actually swinging a controller to control your sword (like Wii); moving your hands in ASL type manners to denote spells (wii+powerglove+natal); running to run in game (natal? usb treadmill?); kicking + needing to kick high to get a torso, higher for a headshot  !; ducking to dodge in FPS...you can imagine..

I pity any pilot with my reflexes.  I certainly wouldn't fly with him/her.    image

"Professional computer gamers have the reactions of fighters pilots but the bodies of 60-year-old chain smokers, according to tests comparing them with international athletes."

Oh, that's very damning, isn't it? Or is it?

Let's compare chess players ( a respectable and recognized sport with huge cash prizes ) with international athletes.

Let's compare spelling championships contestants( a respectable and recognized sport with huge cash prizes ) with international athletes.

Hey, let's compare people like Stephen Hawking to intenational athletes next.

Somehow, comparing the mental athlete with the physical athlete doesn't seem to quite add up, does it?

I work 8-10 hours a day, take care of my annoying ass kids as well. An ancient civilization and a drunk old seer say we are all gonna die in December 2012. I dont have any time to waste exercising so let me get back to my gaming so i can get to lvl cap in Aion and keep up with the most recent gear grind in Wow. I dont have any time to waste on silly things such as my health.

Applications for MMO guilds??? Sorry not that pathetic just yet

I think you misinterpreted the article, or didn't read it properly. The results aren't relative, they're just put side by side with those of athletes to see how the results differed in all categories, which included mental as well as physical tests. That they aren't as fit as international athletes isn't the point, the point is that a 20-something gamer was so unfit that he had the lung function of a 60-year old chain smoker. 25-35 years old is when, physically, the human body is supposed to be near or at its peak.

They only have themselves to blame. Lots of people work 8-10 hours a day and still find time to keep fit, even after a hard day at the office. You can't exactly say you're tired out after a hard day sat in your comfy chair playing video games. Money isn't an issue either, it costs nothing to go for a jog in a park somewhere.
