Rift: Planes of Telara: First Look at the Nightblade

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

The folks at Trion have decided to reveal the classes for the upcoming MMORPG Rift: Planes of Telara. Today, we start with The Ranger.

Our series of class previews continues with a first look at Rift: Planes of Telara's stealthy Nightblade class. For those of us out there who must have their stealth itch scratched when playing an MMO, the Nightblade will be right up your alley.

As a stealth class the Nightblade prefers to wear light armor, though he isn't just your typical cloak 'n' dagger rogue. Instead, he also possesses the ability to tap into the planar magics of fire and death, giving him that extra edge when ambushing his foes and dispatching them quickly.

losing interest on this game in every news, no gameplay of the classm, skill, variations, maybe in the end of the year we may see somethig more "true".

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
    "Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

While it's great to see information coming out about the classes now, how is the Nightblade honestly any different from the rogues we've already seen in a dozen other MMO's?  Change the flavor of the abilities a little bit to talk about poison instead of magic, and you've basically just described WoW's rogue.

Don't get me wrong; there are some things I really like about this game such as the rifts themselves.  But as much as I like the art style and lore of Planes of Telara, I can't help feeling that they're still really just putting a different face on the same things we've already been playing.  The general failures of what has come since WoW really should be warning studios that copying WoW is not a recipe for success.

Bah why did they bother, this is just a rehash of xyz class.  Please hire some imaginative devs. </sarcasm>

We know nothing of any of the classes other than high level overview stuff and the lore around them.  It sounds 'on paper' similar to a WoW rogue, but we know nothing of the mechanics of play, or skill development and advancement.  Hopefully they do reveal some meaty details next week as they keep saying they have a 'unique' class system.  So far the descriptions imply otherwise, but how the classes are implemented is a bigger indicator of their uniqueness than a teaser description.

However Trion also said things like not fixing things which aren't broken, so aurick et al may be right. :)

i keep hearing that people should come up with different things but no one gives an example of these different things,  how would you do a sneak class that would be  so different? or a ranger class that was different?

on a side note, i think this game sounds pretty sweet  just hope my old crappy computer doesnt need to much  to run it.

well isn't this game relatively new? I mean you don't typically see gameplay footage until they get their alpha set up 100%....I'm personally looking forward to this game but you have to have patience before you judge young grasshoppah  :)

How about doing away with classes altogether and using a skill-based system with diverse skills?  Let the players create what they want to play, rather than following a pre-defined path?  There are many ways to do this that would result in the player needing to make tough choices and preventing characters from becoming OP or nerfing themselves.

There are several companies out there that are experimenting with alternatives such as this.  GW2 is going to be one of them.  Eve already is.  Even Champions, to an extent.  My whole disappointment with Rifts is that they appear to be innovating in several ways; it's just a shame that they aren't dong so with character development.

You want gameplay vids check youtube for god sake. And wtf is wrong with you people with all this copy WoW crap, can you guys please stop this stupid bs and enjoy the "hard" work put into this new mmorpg and others releaseing soon. Why the hell are you guys so stuck on classes, even when the play style is not even the same? what the hell can the devolopers do because the original will only be tweaked you cant change what we have set already (as said by Scott Hartsmen CCO/Trions worlds). You people need to wake the hell up and get out of the dulutional state you all in seriously. I enjoy any damn mmo that is worth my time, I don't look for copys is an mmo and other bs, I look for new intertament and fun, is that so hard for you all to do in this new gen of community?

You WoW heads come on our forums with bs every damn time messing up our positive thoughts on new mmo releaseing or forcing people to leave the site, people do not want to see that wow crap every day or every time a brand mmo is on the way. I like wow, it's a good mmo but is not a god mmo and you don't see me or any few others acting like that. IF all you WoW heads do in a new mmo is look for "the copy" then do not play the new mmorpg, stick with your beloved wow because I can't be having some one in my group afk for long mins just to look for copys and then say ( back, hey my buddy need me on wow, so I will see you later) right in the middle of huge fight (true story) 100% bs that day. When I play new mmo I put away the old one  till I feel like playing it again. I can't see my self playing both completely different mmo at the same damn time.

Every single MMORPG release after wow and playable from syfi to mythology get an automaticly stamp of "wow copy" with very little research but the shocking new twist today is the fact before any of the new mmorpg release are now getting the wow copy tag before it's out in the beta phase.

Just so everyone knows, we are seeing the classes and game play next week at E3. We'll have a full report.

Again a pvp game with a stealth class.

I already can hear the OP crys from allover the place.

Every single game, till now, had his problems about stealth and PvP. I think we will hear a lot of that here too. Eighter way .. Op or total Gimped ..  there never seems to be a middle ground.

This looks cool. Like the name too. Has a nice ring to it.

All haters need to disappear because, face it, the human race can only come up with so much. Almost every form of entertainment is a rehash of things that have been done for generations. It doesn't make them any less or bad, the true innovation comes from taking something familiar and presenting it in a new light, hence a "rogue" class that uses magic elements instead of poison. I'm on that! Can't wait to play this one.

On a side note, I wish they would just change the "ranger" title to something more provocative. Titles alone can go a long way to giving a new "feel" to the familiar.

WAR had a pretty good system where stealth drained action points and eventually lifted after something like 30 seconds. I know Witch Hunters and Witch Elves were solid classes, but I don't know if I'd call them either OP or gimped.

That being said, yes, the ability to stealth is typically 'balanced' by sub-par survivability or outrageous dps. This is underscored by the Nightblade's description of being a hit-and-run class.

again with skill based... how is skill based innovative? UO did it... lots of recent games tried to do it... basically the system is as old as the class system... it might be less used overall but it's definitely no innovation or for that matter "better"...

you like a skill system? good for you - go and have fun with it...

i like the class system... so what now? Am I a noob or wrong? I don't think so.. it's just different tastes... Rift is class based - deal with it.

I'm not saying every dev team should stick with one of the two "big" systems... i like how arenanet are handling it f.e. ...

but yeah - Nightblade... kinda interesting... I'm not really an Assassin player though... I like big Swords and Bows ;) but I gotta say, he actually reminds me more of DAoC's Nightshade than of a Rogue with the Shadow Magic an all... we'll see how it turns out i guess

I'm cracking up at all the people who are posting in this and many Rift threads with the assumption that this game is going to be a PVP game... guess what homies, its not.  Go watch the videos and read the interviews.  Although they havent fleshed it out, they've made it pretty clear that this game will be a lot like original EQ in how it handles PVP, in that, there will be PVP servers, but the FOCUS, yes, FOCUS, of the game is PVE, and the majority of the servers will have no PVP outside of duels, or at the very best instanced pvp akin to original wow battlegrounds, etc.
