EVE Online: The Need For Adding The Human Factor

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

One of MMORPG.com's most prolific bloggers, Teala, spent some time putting together an entry that talks about one of the factos that she feels that EVE Online lacks - The Human factor.

I love EvE.   I love the ideal behind EvE.   I love the sandbox game play mechanics.   With that said, and I am not afraid to say it, it is not all it could be in my opinion.   I know EvE has its purist and to deviate from the canon that is EvE Universe -well that is an invitation to invoke the wraith of the purist that will rain down a verbal jihad upon you the likes which you haven't seen until you unleash one of these purist on a forums board.  They will roast you over an open pit, peel your fleshy carcass from the bones and dine on it lovingly - but oh wait...then as the marrow of your bones oozes out they will gather it in goblets and drink of it as if it is a fine wine.   Oh yes...many players of EvE will not stand for blasphemous thoughts or chatter that may take EvE beyond the realm of its designers intent.

Check out Teala's blog, here.

    Completely 100% agree

I agree in that way that it was a huge turn off that I always was a ship. But three other things. First, even with adding a human factor, the core game would still be lots of black space, which just does not interest me. Second, from what I read the mechanics are pretty hardcore, like losing your entire ship, which also is just a no go for my taste. Finally, when a friend showed me the details about EVE, I always had this feeling to have a huige excel chart rather than a game.

I wish everyone fun in his preferrence. But no change whatsoever would ever make me play EVE, and I feel I am not so alone with that. A lot of people just want lush forests, fascinating cities and "stuff".

Good article there. It's probably the biggest reason why I can't play EVE, I just don't connect with it.

Good blog Teala. Is it a coincidence that a girl is talking about the human factor, and very few girls play EVE (as far as I know)? No. Not only will more people come, more girls will come. Gentlemen, I think that's something we can all support. CCP knows it, and they seem closer to Ambulation (or whatever they decide to name it) than ever, especially with DUST in development too. If you've seen some of the technology they're going to use (like the advanced physics for the clothing), I think you'll agree it's worth the wait.

Then again, they've been saying it'll come "eventually" or "soon" for quite a while now, so who knows. I'm still content with EVE in its current incarnation (are they calling it Incarna rather than Ambulation? Hehe, I can't keep up. I'll just call it Walking-in-Stations).

While  I can understand the writers point of view, I can't agree with it completely.  This is most likely due to the fact that when companies try to appeal to wider audience, bad things things happen like the current state of WoW.  Making your character more than an avatar will be a great addition  but your ships, skills, corp and your actions in space should always remain as the key factors in the game.

Adding  an ever increasing  list of features will invevitably lead to certain features being ignored and then becoming obsolete.  This of course could be considered evolution but "If  it isn't broken,  don't fix it."

I agree 100%, i have 18 friends that live in the same town that has ran a guild for 6 years, we play eve on and off.. we love EVE, it is amazing, but we dont stick around for 2 reasons, obviously the human factor... and the fact we have to wait months to skill up to survive without getting ganked in the littlest of security space.  We try to do mining to get resources but that gets VERY boring as you say. So we end up just paying for a few months only to do our skills and then get involved in another game and forgetting eve.

Anyway, we all want the personalization of being a character and not just a ship. I am not a role player so it is hard for me to get past the point you talked about pretending your character is eating Mc Donalds in the station (we all know it will have one!) when we dock.

When they bring out that expansion, we will come back and pick up where we left off.

    Great blog, Teala!

There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

You summed it up beautifully as always Teala.

This is how I have felt since Day 1 of EVE.  It is the 1 lacking thing that would make the 'the last game I ever need to play'

Yea for sure.  A lot of folks are looking for a good sci fi game.  At least the people I know.  They just want more then a space ship and it's understandable.  Their only other option is the same old Star Wars nonsense.

The (unofficial) ETA for Incarna is Q1'11

But CCP being :CCP:, it would hardly be a surprise if they pushed it back some more (What's a 4 year delay between friends?_

I think many of the things you list are the compromises CCP had to make to get everyone on one server in a completely open world. At least, that's how I justify it to myself  image

Sod the purists. They really need to realise that world isnt flat!

Ive been playing eve since 04. One of the things that has kept me playing for so long is that fact that it is the leading edge of game development. Genre blending, boundary pushing innovation is what eve is about. One look at Dust 514 on the horizon and the current planetary interaction update are enough to realise this.

The closest thing I have seen for a reason for this is to have something to do other than spinning ships while hiding in a station... so instead the person will get to spin an avatar through some emotes?

Can anybody that wants this say that it is anything other than fluff?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Excellent article and one the main reasons why it doesn't feel there isn't much 'immersiveness' in Eve.  The game world (or in this case universive) is so massive but most times it never feels like you are 'in' the world.  Even if they added something like a 'cockpit' view would really go along way of trying to capture the essence of being in the game.
