Rift: Planes of Telara: First Look at the Warlock

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Our series of class previews continues with a first look at Rift: Planes of Telara's magical Warlock class.

Rift: Planes of Telara continues to give us a first look at classes leading up to E3. Today we get a closer look at the Warlock. Masters of death and destruction, these casters look to be the ranged damage dealers in the game. Sending curses upon their enemies the Warlocks may be squishy, but they can dish out some serious nasty damage. Any class that embraces death and entropy is fun for those who like the dark arts and caster style game play. The Warlock appears to fill the classic archtype well with nasty spells and stealth skills.

Trion comes through again with screenshots of the Warlock in action. We will continue our class previews all week leading up to E3 next week when we'll get the full details. Alos, check out the Warlock write up below.

Read the First Look at the Warlock.

i know i'm going to sound like a WoW fanboy, but he seems seems a lot like the WoW warlock.  i guess you can't make them that different though.

I wouldn't say that it's a lot like it. The WoW warlock was a pet class. I might say he sounds a bit like the EQ2 warlock, but, and to be fair, many classes in any MMO are going to take their inspiration from a number of others. It's a fair bet, then, that he's going to have bits of WoW's warlock, EQ2's warlock and other game's necros, wizards and even shamans.

All hail the Pixel, for it is glorious Orange!

Not sure how anybody would think this like a WoW Lock.  This class does not fit into the classical definition of the class, like WoW's usage does.

Warlock's generally get their powers through some form of pact with a demonic entity of some sort, which generally carries with it a curse - and thus - it often makes sense that they "curse' people with various debilitating assaults.

The moment you bring death into play instead of demons, I start to think about liches or necromancers.

This was not something brought about by WoW, it simply goes back to the common idea that a Warlock is a male witch.

Games that stray from stereotypes/common ideas at times can be a good thing, but they can also be a put off...

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

His physique is outstanding, not your typical fragile warlock on the pic haha.

Anyway ''These disciples, known as Warlocks, believe that only those who master death can banish the darkness from Telara'' - how to make a badass warlock into a good badass warlock :D.

This game might be the game (besides warhammer online) that makes me chose a caster over my beloved and favourited archetype the Tank. It seems every single mmo I gravitate towards the tank but the warlock looks just to awesome.

Aww. A little disappointed. Looks like the death mages are going to be the DD focused caster and the elemental mages are going to be the pet class. But my necromancer ;;. Oh well, I'm sure I'll figure some compromise out.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Mmm... delicious entropy casters...  I can't wait.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

have to agree... sounds a lot like the EQ2 Warlock with the stuff about AoE curses, "spreading blight" and all... does sound interesting but still not my class....

*still waiting on the class that makes me say: oh yeah that's what it's gonna be folks*

and yeah.... it's tooooootally like WoW's Warlock... I mean he's wearing T0 and we can all clearly see the pet and the soulstones can't we? ^^

It's not exactly a revelation of insight to point out the similarities between the classes in this game and others. Since fantasy games and MMOs have been around a while now, its reasonable to conclude that a consensus has been reached as to approximately how different types of characters - eg warrior - should function and look. Thus most games will adhere to this consensus for player convenience.

Next we'll be moaning that a demon is red and has horns.

if it looks like any thing i think (the clothes) he looks like the Magus from Warhammer online but without his disc .

Well if you have played a affliction warlock alot i guess you can see some similaritis, but apart from the name it is you usual DoT  caster... Thet reside in pretty much every fantasy RPG computer game. They are going to be primo targets in any Pvp setting to stop them from spreading their crule work.

Yay i slew the vile caster of curse and foule magic... .. . *cough* Guess he gets the last laugh *dead*

This have been a good conversation

don't get me wrong mate... I don't give a submarining phoque whether or not he sounds/looks like existing classes in other games... it's merely trying to relate it to something that's already in existence to maybe give other people a better image of what it might play like...

the WoW comparisons on the other hand mostly don't work towards that goal... they're mostly along the lines of " DUUURRR lol dis is wow rippof ololol rofl DURRR" ;)

Ha! you think that they just might have noticed that before sending out the pic...maybe it was a miscast accident...hate it when that happens  or even worse...a pre-mature castillation?

really? I mean really a game that gets hyped one of the most has developed a WoW warlock after 6 years that is different in ...well that it cannot specialize in destruction???

    damn Im psycked!

I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
