open world MMORPG?

majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

So now that FE got it's micro transactions... I'm looking for a new MMORPG.

What should it be like? My perfect MMORPG would have:

  • an open world. No loading screens everywhere, not sliced into tiny zones, not invisible or visible borders on each corner, and no 100 servers with 10 people on each. You know, a game where you can point somewhere in the distance and see a mountain peak, and decide to wander there and check it out.

  • interesting setting. In the worst case fantasy does too, if the rest is alright

  • neat character customization. Ideally you should be able to make chars that don't look like super-models, but even ugly ones if you so choose

  • different races are ok, but not a must. If there are different races, they should be actually different, not just have stats that differ by 0.0% and else be identical

  • carebear. I don't like beeing constantly slaughtered and have my stuff stolen. For PvP I play League of Legends

  • neat weather system. Ideally also terraforming (as said, the "ideal" MMORPG, I take everything getting remotely close to this)

  • of course nice music, sound effects and graphics are a plus, but I'm pretty tolerant

  • if it aims at mature players that's a huge plus. and the more mature the community is, the better as well

  • dark and gritty is nice, but can do without if the rest is good enough

  • either f2p with a bearable item shop (like league of legends), or, preferred, subscription based without item shop

  • classes or no classes, levels or no levels, I don't care, all good

  • high replayability, I like to create more than one char, and going constantly through the same starting zone with each char sucks. So loads of starting zones is a huge plus, as well as many different paths you can take (or ideally an open world)

  • the higher the difficulty in pve the better. I dislike games where you sit there bored, tapping constantly one button in combat, because no matter what you do you don't die anyway

  • no auto-walk function. I hate that. It just causes me to alt-tab out constantly and get bored of the game quickly

  • blood and gore is a plus

  • first person or third person perspective doesn't matter to me

  • pet classes are a plus but not necessary

  • little fast travel is a huge plus. I dislike it if there is a nice detailed world, but noone cares about it, because you just teleport around anyway

  • crafting is necessary. I love crafting. The more stuff to craft, the more important it is, and the more complex, the better

  • dark nights are a plus. :) if day turns blueish and it's called "night", that's pretty silly

  • the more you can shape your char the better. I dislike it if the game does everything automatically, and all chars are in the end the same

Anyone knows a game that get's at least a little bit close? :)

Arn't we all looking forward to an open world MMORPG? Geesh, I haven't seen any in this list since Pre-CU SWG. That was your best bet, and it was the best graphics back in the day (and honestly I still don't think their that bad compared to WOW's cartoony style) WOW, is the only open world mmo i know going out there...since I haven't played Warhammer yet. So I dunno try out a free trial for that. I'm hoping that the new FF mmo isn't going to be super instanced, but thats how games are now. I don't really get it.

[size=8]PLAYED: TSO, SWG, WOW, EQ2, Vanguard, FFXII, AOC, AION, Guild Wars, Second Life

    Waiting: SWTOR, FFXIV

    Thanks for the reply.

Hmmm, yeah, but I don't really consider WoW "open world". I mean it has no loading screens between most zones, but unless you fly around, you can enter and leave a zone only on very few exits/entries. Each zone is like a small cage of a zoo, where you slaughter everything and then move to the next box.

Honestly its alot better then AOC style where you run into a loading screen every 2-3mins. I'm saying atleast WOW HIDES or tries to atleast hide that they are not seamles, I still think SWG was the best example of an open world mmorpg however.

    Vanguard?

I would have to say vanguard is close to what you are looking for. its been awhile since I have played it, but it has tons to do, high end/depth crafting. Also has a unique mini game system of diplomacy. No pvp that i can remember. There are invisible loading lines that only give you a slight pause when going in between. Not many players. The community that is left is nice. I think there are tons of people who are looking for most of what you are listing.

Would be nice if there was a game with:

    sandbox feel of eve.

    active economy of eve.

    harvesting of saga of ryzom

    crafting of vanguard/eq2

    instancing/raiding of wow

combat and graphix of age of conan.

There just isnt a group of people with enough time in the world that can box together all of that and make it functional. There are so many people out there that have played 10+ mmos, seeking something to fulfill an empty void.
