This has been a long-running search for me: I first encountered MMORPGs in Runescape, which of couse I realized is crap. At the house of one of my friends, I played CoH. CoH has the most fun battle system of any game I've played yet. Then, i bought horizions, which i really didn't like. After that, I tried Anarchy Online, but that wasn't too great, although the best thing i'd had yet. Time passed with nothing happening regarding this subject, until a thing happened. My friend, yes the same one, bought World of Warcraft. That game just rocked, it had a battle system that was almost as engaging and interactive as that of CoH, but without the price of no other content. Of course, it is class based, which i don't like, and it is fantasy-medival, another thing I don't like, but the fun factor outweighs it. I've also been seriously looking at the Matrix Online, but that has gotten some definite bad reviews.
Some things to base suggestions on:
- I like having battles be dynamic, so they require thought and strategy. No just click-and-walk-away type battles here, those are sooo boring and not even interactive.
- I like Sci-Fi or Post Apochalyptical, but will go with Fantasy if it is good. This is a reletively minor point, as compared to my opinions on battle systems, classes, and grinding.
- I like it when the world/storyline can be altered by players or groups of players (a big reason im considdering MxO (on a mostly unrelated note: Morpheous smilie ))
- Class-based systems are bad (except when the don't lock you in. The AO one doesn't lock you in.)
- I like the option of soloing or grouping
- grinding is a satanspawn.
- big faction vs faction battles are cool
- i can invest 2 hrs or less per day. No everquest for me.
- I'm 14 years old and can only afford up to 20$ per month, 15$ or less would be preferable.
- I have dialup internet, but a decent computer (500$ Dell Dimension Desktop). Soon i'm gettin satelite though
Ok people, give me some ideas. Please. I wan't MXO to be cool, but i know WoW already is; however there are other games out there I haven't investigated.

You've narrowed it down pretty tightly...
Based purely on your preferences, though, I would recommend SWG. In particular it matches your desire for casual play... the grind is one of the quickest (although it isn't nearly as entertaining as games like WoW) and easy to finish.
Battles are as dynamic as you want them to be. I led the largest rebel guild on my server at one point - it can be a zerg fest or you can be tactical. The spotlight of my career was our rebel city that became a PvP epicenter (Libertas, Starsider), attacked night and day by united Imperial PA's yet we were able to subtly affect the outcome of the battle through mine field placements, base placement, group coordination between allied PA's, and so forth. The bottom line was that the battles were dynamic and as a leader I had to constantly be aware of so many aspects in order to defend our array of bases.
It is sci-fi, there are large faction vs. faction battles, the world can be altered by players or groups of players (Galactic Civil War is now very dynamic in the sense that you fight for control over cities and planets), the skill system would be to your liking, etc.
There are plenty of other great MMORPG's out there, though, and your best bet is to just try each one by one. There's no better place than MMORPG.com to browse your options.
Well I read the SWG review and it dosn't seem like my type of game, with only a 6 in fun.
As i said, the Scifi over Fantasy thing is kinda a minor point compared to my hatred of grinding and click-and-walk-away battles, although the no classes IS a very good point for that one.
Edit: although from the player reviews it looks to be perfect. I'll try a trial if there is one.

Yeah, EVE might be good for you! my Friend Didnt really like the idea of Control SpaceShip etc... he prefer Mediavel stuff, then he tried EVE for fun and he play it for 6 month now! ( by the he was reasearching the same THing as you, there is sure somestuff that you might not find in EVE that you would like, but dunno you could like it (like most people do))
Just to make everything absolutley clear, I'm in this for fun. Granted, EVE or SWG may be fun, but some reviews say otherwise. Personally, I don't care about levels. I do kinda like achievement when it impacts the world - i.e. Player Built Cities, Clans, Storyline Impact - but my charicter's power/inventory getting better gives me very little to no satisfaction or enjoyment. However, in the case of SWG it was a staff review (which get outdated), and the thing that indicated unfun grinding in the case of EVE was people kept saying it required patience - which could just mean slow lvling times instead of boring, repetitive battles.
p.s. im not really into crafting

Take a looksee at WWIIOL, that is seriously THE answer to what you want, the only thing it doesn't go along with in what you're looking for is probably the setting, its obviously not sci-fi. BUT, it is most of those other things, including big faction on faction battles, solo or group play, strategy/tactics requiring battles, etc. etc.
Sounds lika an EvE player to me.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
Just because reviews say a game is great/bad means nothing. WoW got far too good reviews, and i just dont like it, and would never pay for it.
EVE doesnt have levels, and its very open and player controlled. It has a steep learning curve and the games pace is a little slower than most, but due to its unique skill system you dont even need to be playing or even on your computer to continue raising skills since they can train while youre offline. Plus theres a 14-day free trial, just trying it wont kill you.
Darkfall online.
FPS style combat (aka, you have to aim, not just click and stand)
No classes (Purly skill based , change, get new skills at will)
Open PvP (huge faction war, guild war, race war, and can even fight with people in your own race)
