Well, item shops will most likely become a standard and quite frankly I can live with it (does not neces.means that I can afford it) provided it is limited to comestic/minor effect.

Now 10$ for a dog with 4 slots inventory is imho a bit too much. Not the best way to launch an item shop feature.

OMG, sub cancelled. They can't even claim this is simply 'Fluff'. So once again we see a game stoop to charging for box+sub+expansions+Microtransaction (I realise there have been no Expansions for FE yet, but give it time).

What a week, between LOTRO and this I've actually now got no subs left to an mmo. I suppose technically I've got a worthless lifetime subscription to LOTRO. I guess I'm finally done playing MMO's.

I think you're over-reacting a bit, or weren't really enjoying LotRO all that much anyways if you're willing to quit over the changes they announced.

I wouldn't leave EVE if they offered alternate payment plans (which is what LotRO's is all about really)

But as long as your cool with not playing MMO's thats OK..... me I sort of like them.

I mean, it's a shame, really. FE had so much potential.

Their update changes nothing for me. I am paying a subscription to have access to all of the content. I don't care if its only cosmetic or fluff. Every single item in a store is something that players subscribers should have access to without having to pay a single dime more than the subscription.

Subs Plus should not be an acceptable payment method to anyone. Alternate (other than subs) payment methods are fine (ala DDO, LOTRO) but Subs Plus is strait adding content that requires you to pay a sub and then pay micro payments to get access. If you support companies that are going Subs Plus then you are basically volenteering to pay more money for the same content.

You sub entitles you to the service. Nothing elese. This is where most of the issue comes from, uninformed coustmers thinking they are entitled to more for nothing.

    Welcome to the apocalypse :)

If LotRO gains subs and profitability after going F2P, I expect we will see a rush in that direction from a whole crowd of current MMO's that are not earning much for their owners.

AoC on F2P with "alternate payment plans" and an item mall ? Hell, if this trend picks up speed, all the current AAA games will probably have item malls soon....

And it won't stay with "fluff items" indefinitely either. That is just the thin edge of the wedge....

    About #2

That is really the norm now, once the game is out you only need a small team to run it. I don't think Blizzard has the same amount of devs on WoW now as they had while still in development. Of course Blizzard probably didn't do massive layoffs since they could always move them to another game instead.  But honestly you only really need a couple of coders, a few artists and some gm's to support a released game with a patch every month or so.

And regarding SpottyGekko's statement. Selling items that gives you a massive leg up on everyone else will make the guys not using the item stores quit the game and that will mean sparsely populated servers which cause everyone else to leave as well. We had those games before and they are not around any more.

Well subscribers of Turbine's games gets 500 or so points every month and can use them on only fluff items and extra potions and such since you already have all dungeons, quests, classes, races etc unlocked so really you are not affected. You can still play the game exactly the way you have been. Nothing really changed for you. in fact you may even benefit from it cause you will get better populated servers.

Store that sells gear? Gear that wont be craftable. This is bad. I like FE because you can craft about anything.  They are shooting themselves in the foot now. I dont believe that many FE players like this.

Except that FE isnt going F2P according to the article. So its worse. Its sub and item mall. Item mall that sells gear that cant be crafted (one of FE's main features).

    >sigh< just sigh...and to think, I was leaning towards re-subbing to this because of the whole Turbine/LotRO thing and looking for a new game to play....so much for that idea.

It is increasingly looking like I have a whole lot more time on my hands to play offline games or otherwise amuse myself away from online RPGs.

Ya its a money grab but if they keep it to fluff items i think their vet player base will stay.

But if they keep sub prices and go full item shop they run the risk of alienating their vets which would be a bad idea imo.image

I had a reply written up but then I took some time to read some of your other posts and found out that you're pretty much a troll. Of the 20+ posts I read you contributed exactly 0 to any discussion. I'm not going to bother trying to discuss something with someone who obviously only posts to be argumentative for their personal enjoyment.

Yes but sub+item store is not going to go over well with the community they have and want to play their game. image

All mmo's are going this way.  Personally I don't mind as long as it's fluff.  I think the dog is pretty cool, but $10 bucks is too much in my opinion.

They should add a vanity tab where clothes are just for appearances, and then start adding clothing items to their item mall. If they charge 99 cents per item they could make a lot of money with little clothing packs.  I think it's better to sell stuff cheaper because you end up selling more of it.

  • Has an item mall ever made a MMO better (content wise)?

This is probably a knee-jerk for all those that supported them from the start. Now, if you are a roleplayer but have little money, you pretty much lose out.

But I'm sure they only included that cash shop because they are "concerned" about their customers image

I would disagree completely.  Having a subscription to any game entitles a player to full access.  I could agree with your statement if a company allowed the player to bring his own " golf bag " to the course.

I think its so funny that many of you just thought of resubbing before this happen, and now your not going to. If all of you had resubbed maby this wouldent have happend so fast.

Back to the point, i dont see a problem with this, they should go f2p like lotro will and they mabey be able to keep this game alive.

The sad thing isn't the new business model, but the fact that they actually will make money out of it as there will always be enough players paying for Subs Plus in addition to the monthly sub, or else they would have never introduced this.

It seems to be so profitable that the general MMO trend will be towards this type of billing setup and we as a customer will have to differentiate between games with fluff item malls and items that actually provide an in-game advantage (which to me is unacceptable).
