Totally off-topic, but does anyone remember that vietnamese dude who was lost at sea for a few months, eating seagulls and turtles while drinking rain water, until the coast guard found him?
As soon as he was rescued he got back on a boat and was never seen nor heard from again.
The ocean changes people like that, and wouldn't it be strange that if after this girl is rescued she heads back out because the sea made her all grizzled or something?

I do not understand why she did not join the Navy instead. She more then likey drowned or was eaten, really it does not matter, the point is she would have died doing something she really wanted to do and though in retrospect it was stupid for a 16 year old child to do this and even dumber of the parents to allow it, the end result is she died doing something fun for herself and now her family can try and cope with losing her and the empty void that will bring about in their lives. Anyhow I am sure they have pictures and maybe even old videos of good times to look back on for future reference Bring it on down now.
Damn byotch dat aint no friggn moon fool, dat be a friggn space station byotch.
I hope she just lost contact temporarily due to the storm. I remember when she set out, there was a lot of angst over it, but she was damned determined.
As funny as it sounds there actually are US Coast Guard ships that have been there serving with the US Navy as well as with UN and other international organizations sponsored an supported thru the UN. But in many cases such as this not always would actual ships be involved however US military and US allied Military such as the UK, Canada, Aus and etc.. would be involved. Either way countires like India for example would be compensated thru US tax payers for the rescure, however countires like Canada or the UK for example no compensation would be expect due to the relationships they share. Bring it on down now.

Seriously. There aren't many things you can do in this world, that are more dangerous than sailing the ocean in a small vessel.
::sigh::
God.. first Jessica Watson, don't tell us you're in love with this fool as well?
My taxpayer dollars now gotta go into rescuing her.
So the US Coast Guard in the southern Indian Ocean now?
Wrong, try again!
OMG! Are you just that whiney? Really? Over a rescue? What so nobody is suppose to ever push the boundries of doing anything the least bit dangerous because it may cost you a few pennies. Yes you persoanlly a few pennies. Because if I recall correctly there is more than just you paying taxes.
Anyway - she is alive and well. Her sail boat lost its mast during a very bad storm with sea swells as high as 90ft. Her mast snapped off from a knockdown. She however is safe and is being picked up by a French rescue ship.
Seriously. There aren't many things you can do in this world, that are more dangerous than sailing the ocean in a small vessel.

More then likely that mast was made in China. Spending time with the French she more then likey will wish to be thrown back into the sea, or maybe she will just have a lot of sex, French girls are really wonderful, she could try lezzin out before being sent home, now that would make for her really pushing the boundries. Really ... your comparing the boundry of survival and risking ones life for a goal to what, imagined societal constraints with absolutely zero physical force. What a ridiculous unconsidered notion, sailing around the world pushes boundaries that aren't merely "because someone told me I can't" or "but what will others think".
A clear understanding of the consequences and severity that can result from choices along with what it actually means to encounter and overcome a barrier is one of the invaluable gifts these commendable parents, in this way, gave to their young daughter by providing the opportunity. For that they most defiantly do not belong being equated with the parents rightfully sitting in jail for murdering their children.
It takes courage to hop in a little boat and head out, which is really the point some things in life exist only in the mind of those that want them too others will kill you if you don't pay them mind.

You have got to be kidding me. Do you think the ocean is just a place to follic and have a good time or something or are you just completely freaking ignorant? Have you actually ever been more than 100ft off shore? 10mi out is a very very different place than what it looks like from the shore. I can only imagine what it's like on the high seas. It's no joke in a small vessel, it's not a wonderland were people go to have a good time like on massive cruise ships want you to believe. There is a reason they are bigger than a high rise building.
You think it's ok for parents to live through their children? Because, that is EXACTLY what is going on here. It's a major feat for a person to sail around the world by themselves, when they have been sailing for twice as long as this kid has been alive. This is the same sort of twisted mentality as those fat, old, ugly women who dress their 5yr olds like hookers and parade them around on stage. It's freaking sickening. The only difference is that it's rare a kid dies on stage from dressing like a pedophile's dream, where some of the most dangerous jobs on the planet are people out on the high seas in small vessels.
Go donate some more of your money to Hati btw. What ever happened to your bleeding heart for that? "I'm gonna keep donating after this is over!" Yup, I am willing to be that didn't happen. People who've never left their couch amaze me.

Really....well I have news for you, just walking across the street is dangerous - or playing a friendly game of baseball, how about skate boarding. The world is a dangerous place. We might as well just all slit our wrist. ANd what is this about Haiti? You are then going off on some tangent about Haiti and trying to take this off topic...how did Haiti get mixed up with a girl trying to sail around the world anyway? Know what I think. I think you are just looking to start an argument with me.
I'm glad they found her alive and well, was worried for a bit yesterday when I heard the news. If this is something she wants to do and her choice, more powers to her. People choose to achieve weird things, such as climbing mount everest, fly solo, sky diving, etc etc..
There are some people that just strive to do tough things. I wouldn't hold it against her for trying to circumnavigate solo at her age. However, this experience may make her second guess that decision. Where I grew up from at around that age some people sometimes go on survival training solo in Black Bear infested mountains.

I'm not trying to start an argument, it just made me mad to see people like you post about stuff like this and just happened to remember your whole bleeding heart Hati thing. There are some people that just strive to do tough things. I wouldn't hold it against her for trying to circumnavigate solo at her age. What about the parents though? How could any sane person, let their child try to sail around the world by themselves? Like, I said earlier... they are just trying to live through their children and it's pathetic. But, somehow in our society it's become acceptable to allow ignorant children to do w/e they want, as long as it's ok with their half insane parents. The simple fact is that her parents were trying to make a name for themselves through their children. This is what.... the 3rd one of their kids that have tried to do this? The first 2 were lucky as hell.
Survival Training is one thing, but sailing around the world is something completely different.
Has nobody on these forums been on the ocean before? I haven't been far out (10-20mi) or very many times, but once you get away from the shore, the open ocean becomes a VERY VERY different place when you're on anything other than a huge ship made to cross the oceans. It's not a float down the lazy river at the local water park that's for damn sure.
I just don't think some people realize how freaking dangerous what she did really was and I really can't think of anything, that most people know about, that I can compare it with. That's probably the only reason her parents have been allowed to get away with this so many times, now that I think of it. Kind of like how most judges in computer based cases make the wrong decisions, because they really don't even understand what they are actually deciding on.
More then likely that mast was made in China. Wow that sounds so interesting, what you seem to have left out though is the fact that while her parents have instilled a clear understanding of the consequences and severity that can result from the choices they make and how much of an invaluable gift it offers and the massive commentation the said parents should garner, I find it interesting how they seem to have not weighed the consequences and severity of their choices that they make on the lives of others who have to place their lives at risk in order to save their daughters. But then again I guess from your logic they really then should not have a problem footing the bill for the rescue of their daughter, since after all I am sure that would surely also be factored into the understanding of the consequences and severity of their choice. Bring it on down now.

Your question of who needs to foot the bill is a tough one, right now the answer does include herself/parents/advisers mistakes or unintended consequences being partially payed for by those without any say in the matter which is an understandable criticism, a bit of unfairness in life that is certainly not the only example to look at.
Yet, while the cost is significant some measure of scope is useful to keep in mind, as maintaining free and safe (so much as it is) transit over the oceans is also in the national interest by lowering the risks of oceanic transit for trade. While your point is strong if these resources where only used to rescue a very small number of sailing enthusiasts it is a bit misleading to say so as currently the collective expense is expended on all emergencies and by so doing does reduce the risk of any and all traffic on the high seas in particular reducing the risk based costs of international trade. As a result, keeping consumer and business goods slightly less then they would be otherwise.

Which is way in the area of oceanic interernational trade, mulinational taxing systems specificly desgined and sponsored by the WTO are in place to cover costs associated with such rescues of classification trading vessels. Further internation consortiums using lanes in international and national waters do pay addition fees for multinational goverment insurance claims that also go towards SAR operations.
