World war 2 online, or SWG?

deidesdeides Member Posts: 197

Im a UO vet whos tried it all and found everything lacking - and now im hesitating between WWII online and SWG - I know SWG dissapointed alot of people when it came out, but it seems as though theyve fixed alot of the bugs, and the game has an open skill system (as opposed to class system) which I really like. On the other hand, WWIIO also seems like an awsome game, not as hardcore as other mmos (isnt permanent, resets every 3 months?)

Ill try the trials for both, but still thought i'd clutter up the forums with yet another "XX or YYY?" post, hoping to get some opinions from those who play the games.

cheers :)

Well, theres alot of difference between these 2, but i'd go for SWG

I agree with warc, I'd go with SWG (however, just so you know, I recently came back after hating the game, and LOVE it, so I'm biased).

But it is like apples and oranges. I like both games, but given the choice, there's no contest for me.

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

I'd pick WWIIO. I love that game [taking a month break] and imo, if I were to pick between to two, i'd pick WW2O. But yes, they are apples and oranges.

    I agree...

You really cannot compare what is essentially a first person shooter (planetside style) with some really good depth mind you, to an actual MMORPG.

SWG is "turn based" and has a much heavier emphasis on grinding and then pretty much relies on roleplaying in order to get any real value. WWIIO is much less time consuming as there really is no grind. It is mostly semi coordinated assaults on strategic bases with the goal of depleting the enemy's force and resulting in a sort of capture the flag win.

The only "problem" I find with games like WWII and Planetside is not having any long term victory. The base you spent an hour capturing today will likely have been recaptured while you were sleeping and so it begins again. A steady back and forth zerg match that has more to do with who can bring the largest number of players to bear on any given target than actual player skill.

I suppose I would play SWG if you are looking for a long term immersive time consuming game. If you are looking for instant gratification and you like the ability to participate in fast paced first person action using all the weapons and vehicles that the time period provides then WWIIO is the better game.

if you like roleplaying with crafting, levelling and so on go for swg but when you like pvp/war simulation go for ww2online

  • deidesdeides Member Posts: 197

Thanks for the infos - yep WWII doesnt have any long-term "victory", something thats a little sad - I love the idea though, and installing the trial now. What i dont like about swg is the fact that it looks like a "Job" more than a game... you have to pay taxes!?!?!? rent!?!?

long term victory in WW2O is there. It is the fact that capturing as many towns as you can leads you closer to defeating the enemy.

of course there is a long term victory in ww2online but it is different than in swg

the duration of every campaign in ww2online ranges from 2-12 weeks (would say average is 8 weeks) so the goal is to take over cities/bunkers/spawnables/af´s/docks etc when one party is defeated and the map is overrunned you reached your victory, for longer term you try to rank up to choose better equipment and of course you work on your skills with joystick and mouse to get better in the fights.

whereas swg is build on levels where u reach your long term victories with economic success/more money and better skills when u reach higher levels but u cant take over terrain for your faction.

the different is in ww2online skill depends on your personality where u learn your skills with just playing the game and getting more expirienced in the units u spawn/spawn with higher ranks whereas it wont be fastern than in swg, in swg you are more fixed on game time and reached level which u get from hard levelling/killing mobs/crafting items.

ww2onlie is a war simulation and not a traditional mmorpg you reallly cant compare swg with ww2online its totally different, but with both you could have lots of fun. ww2online is a niche game besides the mainstream whereas swg connects to traditional mmorpg gameplay - depends what u want

You have to pay credits when you have a house. like mine for instance is 16 c/h (credits and hour) and so while it degrades over time, you can spend money into the house to upkeep it. taxes? probably for buying things in player owned cities. Mayors can tax goods and services there.

Coming from uo, i'm simply looking for an mmo with skill-based skill system (Ie no fixed classes), customizeable housing, and perhaps a good market system - It seems like SWG has all that and thats why im considering playing it. But if the gae is full of bugs, or boring, or whatnot, then my next best alternative is to play WW2O, or a game similar to that - at least untill a mmo comes out which tickles my fancy.

The worse thing about mmo's is that sometimes you feel obliged to play - Ie, a guild has a meeting/event, you have to pay some money for something everyday else youll loose your house, or whatever. I think games are for fun, and I hate HAVING to play. I want to play when i want to. So thats what's bugging me about SWG, i hear you hafe to pay daily maintenance fees for houses, and whatever else. Anyone playing SWG that feels like they HAVE to play?

    I must say this....

If you plan on getting SWG then I implore you to wait. They are going through many changes right now that will only confuse and upset you.

There is an expansion pack AND a complete overhaul of the combat system due to be released in the next 2 months. This will change the game entirely. Also they will be releasing a package deal that comes with the original client, the jump to lightspeed expansion AND the new rage of wookiees expansion for probably 50 bucks which is alot cheaper than if you go out and buy all 3 seperately right now.

    Just some advice.....

I'd say WWIIOL would be better, unless you like a grindy sort of MMORPG like SWG.  But, like what has been said, they're very different.

WWIIOL isn't just a first-person shooter/RPG thing, its really better classified as THE first-person combined arms sim. Its the fact that you have tanks and infantry and planes and boats and stuff all fighting together that makes it so incredibly awesome. It can be an instant gratification kind of thing, but as a noobie even if you have prior FPS experience, you'll most likely get sploded a lot. Its not at all about having to have played for 3 years 24/7 to finally be able to get the good stuff, it barely takes any time at all to get enough rank to spawn any equipment you want. And if you're infantry vs. infantry or tank vs. tank, its almost entirely a fight relying on skill, not on who has a fancier laser gun. I haven't really played SWG as much, but to me it seems just like any other MMORPG, with your levelling and all, so if you're sick of the formula, give WWIIOL a try, just be careful not to get TOO badly addicted.

If you like PvP, then I suggest WW2 Online over SWG.

BTW, WW2 Online had a far worse launch than SWG! During WW2O first year of release it was one of the worse ever MMORPGs, doing soo badly in subscribers it almost got shut down. It was barely able to do a turn around. (Just like AO did.) AC2 later took the crown from WW2O for worse ever release and launch of a MMORPG.

If you like having 30+ choices of how to play other than PvP, then I suggest SWG over WW2O. If you are a die-hard Star Wars fan, then I also suggest SWG. IF you do want to check out the PvP in SWG, I suggest you join Scylla server. Then join the PA (Player Association) Pax Imperious for Imperials, or KOTOR for Rebels. They are two of the most famous, RPing, and best PvP PAs in the game.

Yep. WW2O had the worst launch in the history of gaming. Only a couple of weapons, bad graphics, buggy everything, terrible hitboxes on tanks and planes, and a low player base. 4 years later, it is a great game with a stable player base and updates coming every few weeks.

Very easy for me to say WWIIOL, but I am biased, as I have been playing WWIIOL since June of 2001. For hardcore TEAM-BASED PvP, ther's nothing else quite like it.  ;)

Prior to WWIIOL's release in June of 2001, I used to buy 2-3 new PC games every month. Since that time, I think I've only bought 4-5 games total. Nothing else holds my interest and gives me teh adreneline surge that WWIIOL can give. But it is a very complex game with a difficult learning curve basically because the only skill upgrades you get, are the ones you actually learn while playing. There are no "+1 rifles". lol

WWIIOL also has a pretty helpful and mature playerbase. I'm 43, the squad I am in has about 120 guys in it and our avg age is in the low 30's. Many players are ex- and current military personel from around the globe. Heck, my Armee commander in game works at the Pentagon. lol

In any case, I'd suggest giving a trial a try and find out for yourself. The only thing I can say is give it the full 14 days. It really takes much longer than that to really get comfortable in the game. I'd concentrate on one or two avatar types and learn them. And most importantly, hook up with a squad, even if just for the length of the trial. It will make a HUGE difference to your experience as most Squads offer training and give you a group of guys to work with every time you play as soon as you log in.  ;)

If you have more questions, there's a forum gfor WWIIOL here at MMORPG, you can always ask more questions there.  ;)

    Have Fun!

SWG is what you're looking for. My wife adored UO and I can't peel her away from SWG to save my life :) That said, as an AVID Star Wars fan I enjoy playing it too. I'm the top Fighter Ace in my Guild :)
