Is going to change significantly in the future with the "pay for your items" mentality.
When Project Entropia did this, as well as Second life, people said I would never pay for ingame items (to those I say, have you bought off ebay?)
seems like Microsoft is jumping on this "cash cow" Microtransations, Microsoft and futre Xbox

I don't understand why people have a problem with this! - Are MMORPGs not designed to mimic a would-be fantasy life?
Would you carryu on reading a book if it said "..... and the purely by chance the hero stumbles across a magical sword and shield..."? Not unless you're 10 years old you wouldn't!
In real life we have to pay for items so what's so strange about paying for them in a good role play? - Unless maybe your mum buys everything for you still so you aren't used to the whole paying concept!
LOL LIberty, my "mum" would have a fit at my age, if I said can I have 10 bucks to buy a few peices of gold in game?
For me the comparison was the games with the "microtransactions" vs the monthly pay to play
What will be interesting to find out is how much must one deposit in order for microtransactions to be able to completed. As stated in the article, not cost effective to do each little transaction, however a larger sum deposited and converted to ingame currency would offset costs.
I tried PE. I put at start 10 dollars (US) in my account to get me started. Didn't last long lol (it was to see what the world was about as well as the game)
Some people managed to get by on very little per month compared to a monthly paying game. Others spent. Well we know what some spent (think 26K recently).

well with Microsoft Xenon (xbox 2) that's already been planned for a while...
and I'm sure as hell going to dish out like 5 more bucks if it gives me the maps/weps right away that would originally take the company more than 6 months to release for a f ree download.

hmm darn forums ate my first post!
More curious to see how this is implemented.
I can hear my son now: Mom, can I have 5 bucks for this awesome armor?
I think not!

yeah, I think more and more games are going to use this "rip-off" system. there are always going to people who are so that they'll buy certain items ingame for real money. personally I wouldn't spend a single cent ( euro cent, I'm from europe) on any one off this items. if my sister finds out about this, I'll keep hearing her asking me: can I have 10 euro's for this sword or something like that.
wtf?
Are you understanding what he's saying?
Would-be fantasy lives are fine as they are using in-game currency. Keep RL cash out of it - no one in their right mind would let paying RL money for in-game items and such become mainstream.
i personally am so objected to ebayers, that i killed deleveled my lineage 2 character from 57 to 34 killing them.I was gonna quit anyway, so i decided to go out with a bang.
that being said if a game company started doing this on a large scale, i think their would be a counter pirating technology right away, a way to copy downloaded items, and give em to people for free. so i dont think it will last just because internet pirates are 10 times smarter then anyone else online. and the games would at the very least stop doing taht or Collapse entirely into chaos and anarchy. with massive banning of like half the population. just because if they do this someone will pirate it, and we will all have free uber items.
that being said i think that my proof for this happening is exploits, players take advantage of exploits so i think they would take advantage of this. i took advantage of an exploit in lineage 2 to get me 40 million adena, which i spent wisely. it was due to a lag between the quest acceptor guy accepting the item, and you being able to keep the item and getting him able to recognize it multiple times. it was fixed though. and i narrowly avoided getting banned though. because i had this exploit botted, for a week and a half.
that being said the person who gave me wind of this exploit was a cousin of my friend who used to be GM, in L2. and got fired for building the panty patch. who then sold L2 guides exploits and bots on ebay afterwards. so as long as peoples morals are going to be this loose i think that if they sell u in game items for cash then what will happen is it will get pirated and all hell will break lose.

I cant see myself ever doing so and I would bet that most gamers would never play a mmorpg that did and would bail from one that started.
silly really.
I would play Runescape before I ever bought ingame items.
Hell, i'd play referal based online games before buying in-game currency.

Hmmm.... This gives me an idea. Back to the drawing board!
Get used to it this is capitalism at work.It was just a matter of time before it happened.Complain all you want it wont change a thing.
This is the "next generation"of gaming.
MMo's started the pay to play concept.Microsoft is just taking it a bit further.Look forward to SONY doing the same thing if microsoft is succesfull with it.You know SONY will do it they still charge for crappy expansions when other game companies (NCSOFT and CCP) dont.It will be spun as "play your way" or something along those lines.
Vote with your wallet and dont play if you dont like it.

I agree that companies are missing out on the player-player online trading thing that eBay offers them by not incorporating it into the game. If they incorporate that into the game, then all of these external sites who offer services like IGE will be run into the ground because the gaming company can ensure delivery of the product.
That being said, I don't like the ability to purchase new items with real world money. It takes no effort at all on anyone's part for the developers to code in CreateNew("sword") or whatever into the code. On the flip side, I guess it can regulate what players charge each other for the same sword, but I still don't really care for it.
I'd like to see them incorporate player-player trading in game for real world money, of course charging a % just like eBay does and then lower the monthly fee for the rest of us. But the reality is, they will incorporate this and keep the monthly fee's the same and the only people who will benefit are the companies providing the service.
