So I pre-ordered the game under the weight of the Keys to City hype, and also because I had been following this game's development loosely for the last 6 months or so.
I'm not going to lie, the premise, the graphic and art style, and the customization had me hooked. I knew it was going to be a 3rd person Multi-Player shooter, with the cops & robbers flavoring. Sounded pretty damn cool to me.
In nearing my last hour of the 5 you get for the KTTC event, I have realized this is not what I had expected. First and foremost, I just cannot get into the one of the most clunky game-mechanics and controls I have ever experienced. The control layout isn't so bad, especially since you can always change them, but there is such a clunky feel and delayed response to everything.
The shooting mechanic is dissapointing, basically spray and pray, and as others have mentioned, I'm often left wondering why someone hasn't died after unloading 2 straight clips into them from a sub-machine gun, only to be 2 shotted in return. And the driving, well, that's another story. Not sure why this game has to have one of the worst vehicle mechanics and controls I have every experienced in all the games I've played with driving in them.
Maybe it's just me, maybe I didn't do enough research before buying, but regardless, I doubt I'll be using much of my free 50 hours at launch. I did not enjoy the game enough. I'm not looking to debate what I should have/shouldn't have expected from the game, just wondering if anyone else is dissapointed from what they experienced in KTTC and why?

Game has ridiculously high RAM requirments....
It even suggests you don't play if you have less then 2.5gs and/or 32 bit processors...
I'll say it again the only thing that isn't garbage in this game is the character creator.
Indeed, it does. I have 4 gb and my ram usage is above 90%.
It favors the 64 OS's, otherwise graphis will look bad.
Reason why I changed to 64 myself.
Take the Magic: The Gathering 'What Color Are You?' Quiz.
If you're implying my rig specs aren't up to par, I have 6 Gigs of DDR3 and a 2.7GHz i7 Quad-Core. I somehow doubt my dissatisfaction with the game has anything to do with it's system requirements.
Its not nessesarily the specs which causes it to feel clunky.
I have a similar rig, 4gig processor.. and a brand new gtx470.. for me its silky smooth, its like playing counterstrike online.
I know people with highspec too and they complain of clunkyness.. I think you were probably just unlucky with the lag... or there is something on your system interfering!.. I know some people with certain makes and models of equipment have issues! APB does have PhysX optimisations in, and the Nvidia cards have a built in PhysX processor.. so ATI users dont seem to get the same performance.
Also sound!.. I know people using certain on board sounc chips causes them a lot of stuttering.
Dont forget it is in beta and they are stress testing DOH!
The driving stuff could be a bit more controllable right now basically you ram into anything and everything if you aren't the world's greatest sim driver.
I don't know why people are saying the game is clunky. I don't experience any of this clunkyness when I play. The controls feel tight like just about any other fps game.
The driving mechanics can indeed use a little work, but once you get use to them it's not hard to drive a vehicle and make it go exactly where you want it to.
One thing I do wish they would add is more graphics options to the options menu. Allow us to fine tune the options instead of the game having control over it all
If I can make a comparison to maybe explain what I mean better, have you ever tried Global Agenda? Now they got the 3rd person shooter mechanics down way smoother, that's how I wish APB would be, even though both games should also have body part specific hitboxes....but that's just wishful thinking on my part.
But seriously, I think those who have also played GA can agree that GA got the 3rd person shooter mechanics and movements down way smoother than RW did for APB.
Chosing vertical progression for any online PvP game that focuses on player skill is a mistake; a massive mistake for a game that doesn't even have any PvE. As you say it should be horizontal in that you progress towards specializations rather than straight up improvements. Upgrades should be modifications instead. The idea has been suggested and highly supported throughout beta, but ultimately ignored by the developers.
People keep blaming matchmaking, but that's not the heart of the problem.
I disagree with all of you on the controls. I think they feel fine. Maybe it's because I'm used to playing GTA on both the PC and consoles.
As in real life make sure you are applying the brake before turns. You can't just turn a car at maximum speed and expect it not to spin in some wild arc. Make use of the hand brake for quicker turns. If the car controls were too fluid I think everyone would just ram people to death.
As far as the gear gap, I agree a shooter or skill based game should never have such vertical progression. I don't mind a little bit of it here and there, but even with the nerf mods are still ridiculous and the starting guns can't compete with some of the other guns. Progression should be unlocking more weapons with equal power - look at Modern Warfare 2 for example. There is progression via unlocking various things, but there is very little vertical progression and a new account can perform almost as well as someone who has unlocked everything.
