New $200 Xbox 360 planned, Elite & Arcade getting $50 price cut

New version of console in the works to replace discontinued entry-level model; Elite also being phased out; slim hard drive detachable.

LOS ANGELES--Microsoft's showstopping closer for its Electronic Entertainment Expo press conference this morning was the unveiling of the most dramatic Xbox 360 hardware revision since the console launched in November 2005. Equipped with built-in N-wireless connectivity, a 45nm CPU and GPU, the new slimline 250GB Xbox 360 will include a built-in port for the Kinect motion-sensing system and a $300 price tag.

The price tag of the current Xbox 360 Elite model is $300, which includes a 120GB hard drive and a comparatively bulky exterior. That model, which includes no wireless functionality, is getting a $50 price cut effective immediately. The $200 Arcade model, which doesn't even include a hard drive, is being similarly discounted, and will now only cost $150.

Ryan Moore, product marketing manager for Xbox, told GameSpot that both models are also being discontinued. Once they leave the retail channel, the new slimline Xbox 360 will be the sole Xbox mode on the market--for a time. Moore said that Microsoft is currently working on a second new Xbox 360, which will be offered at the arcade's price point of $200. He declined to say what functionalities the cheaper model would or would not have.

One likely scenario is the cheaper model will essentially be a slim arcade with no Wi-Fi capabilities or a hard drive. Contrary to early reports, the new 250GB 360 has a fully detachable hard drive, much like its elder brothers. However, like the console itself, it is much smaller than its forebearer.

Moore also said that going forward, all future models of the Xbox 360 would not have names and would only be designated by their memory capacity. He decline to elaborate on whether that meant that all future 360s would have a hard drive of some sort.

I love how the new xbox looks, i didnt even realise it had this shiney finish to it.  Everyone's been saying "I like how when most games are being pitched at the conferences they're using ps3's" .... clearly just ps3 fanboy's (like it even matters?).  Personally i'm open minded tho :)

One thing is that the CPU and GPU is integrated now, so there will be less heat coming from it, its also much quieter!

I'm not really impressed at all with the Kinect.

I am impressd with some of the games they showed. Plus, price cuts are always a welcome thing hehe

Nothing really spectacular but then again wasn't a bust either.  Their little E3 schtick was overall a bit ho-hum.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Unsurprisingly, the Kinect/Natal looks like a gimmick. Shocker there. I don't know where the hell people managed to hype it up from, because it never had any potential to be more than an HD eyetoy with possibly some potential for NPC interaction with RPGs etc based off your facial reactions etc, but still ultimately a gimmick. The Sony Wand or whatever the hell it is isn't looking much better, but the fact that it has things you hold that can be mapped as focus points gives it limited potential for some games, but nothing you would likely want to play for long periods.

Not a huge fan of the new case. It looks like someone kicked the front of it and it got dented. It is sleeker looking than the original, but yeah *shrug* just doesn't really appeal that much visually.

It is nice to hear it's finally coming with wireless built in, and this seems to be more of an actual switch as opposed to the whole "lets mess with the HD size and relabel the pro to force a price cut" thing they did last time. I know the current gen is going to be around for a while more, I'm just wondering if the system I have now is going to soldier on until the next gen, or if I'll end up with one of these new ones. At least I didn't have to pick up a new one when this one decided to ring on me out of the blue (seriously, hadn't turned it on in over a month, go to turn it back on, BOOM, ring.) as I managed to fix it. Would have sucked getting one and then finding out about this model and the drop a few months down the line.

The bigger question here is, now that they've fucked with the HD standard, what are they going to do about hard drives? Is there going to be another transfer cable thing to move data onto the new "slim" drive? What about for drives that are larger than their current slim offering? Will it accept both the old hard drives and the new ones? It is a mystery!

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

anyone notice how the new XBox 360 is glossy like the original PS3. And the Original XBox 360 isnt so glossy like the new PS3.

I only like the motion thing for exercise games.

the stuff they showed at E3 yesterday was cool I just dont see them using it much in real games.

Also whats the deal with the push for 3d? That shit gives me a headache.

Edit: Just wanna toss one more thing out there. Ghost Recon: Future soldier blew me away. I thought this console generation couldnt get better. with the video of other games like Dead space 2 & Crysis 2 they've proven all of us wrong. This generation clearly has around five years left.

This is a very great deal for those who doesn't have the xbox 360 yet!

Kinect/as well as that ps3 wand thing - i reckon are just trying to leech players from wii's audience.  Thing is there are alot of casual gamers out there in the world.  When i was watching the E3 conference of Microsoft people were falming the child-like games, dacning games etc.  People on Twitter shouting "where's the REAL games"... thing that most gamers/extreme gamers don't understand - those who play mw2, BF:BC2, GoW3, AC2 - all those so called "real" games... well the Kinect isn't aimed at you.  It's aimed at the casual players.

That being said, sure what the hell do Microsoft think - that people with motion control consoles such as wii will also buy the xbox?  Well only way i can see them doing that is if they come out with unique, groundbreaking games not seen on wii.  Very difficult to do i'd say, but i can see where Microsoft are going with this.  Just a question of if it will succeed.

Microsofts motion control has a huge advantage over Wii and PS3.

Your body is basically the peripheral.

Theres a reason some of those kinect games are only for 360.

Its much more advanced than what sony and nintendo have atm.

So i can see people getting excited for it.

Very much so.I'm just nto a big believer in this Kinect. What sells consoles is great games not motion control 3d thing. When Bungie made Halo everyone and their cousin ran to get a Xbox to play. I don't see that happening here with Kinect at all.
