~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!

I hope it does. It would make all newer mmos focus more on customization. It all APB has going for it. For an AA mmo It awesom.

I've got my eyes on APB. I'm hoping it ends up being a success. The MMORPG market is a little dry right now while everyone sits around waiting for expansions. That's the best time to strike with something original.

The model they setup up for it seems they can get tons of success out of a huge casual market. I'm hoping for more then this though. I'm hoping it hits in houndreds of millions. GTA Is one top 10 selling games. I aint dreaming to big now right?

err GTA now number 11. The darn wii toys knock it down.(wii play and wii fit)

I LoLed at this thread. Punk Buster has been around for ages and has been widely used in other games, even Quake Arena if I recall correctly (on servers that require them) and Half-Life, other versions of DirectX can coexist, and are even required by some other games anyways, even if you are running DX11. Nvidia Physx drivers and the Physx software, are you sure it didn't just install the PhysX software? Steam requires admin access because it runs a system process, any program that modifies, runs a system process requires admin access, sorry to break it to you PC Tech guy.

developers always seem to put lots of stuff on your pc you never agreed with, most of the time you're not even aware off them but they seem to think they've a right to own your pc while they never even make an attempt to purchase or rent it from you lol. but hey some other programmers probably make cash out of it selling the software to remove all that key registry crap others 'forgot' to include in their uninstall command... IT is one of those branches where the workers are capable off creating their own jobsecurity just by messing things up lol

i've no idea what this specific type of so-called 'security' system does (except generating cash for the ones who developed it). in general there are some know for slowing down your pc and possibly intrude your privacy. the absurdity this creates is often that pirated versions are actually more user friendly lol.

anyway i'm one of those guys who actually check for certain types of drm's i read about their potential 'harmfull' effects or simply because they weigh too heavy on my processor (buying a new pc just for someone elses interest? yeah right :p) before i even consider purchasing a game, a sport by itself because they always seem to 'forget' to mention those programs even though you actually buy the whole package .... 'security' cost included but that's just not what a customer bargains for: we just want to play the game.

however a game might be fantastic by itself but there are a lot of companies who will never get any cash from me when their own interest conflicts with my own desire to keep my pc 'clean' -like in: just the software i need on it and nothing more- and in good working order.

I just pre ordered APB from Steam Approximately 3 Hours ago, and Downloaded it, When I installed it, APB Failed to launch, Installing Visual C++ Run Time from Steam, Which is bullshit because my computer already has it, No way to override, Installing Direct X, I use DX11 already, and such, After trying like quite a few times to do this, I Discovered that just to Play APB, I have to run Steam as An Administrator on Windows Vista, and slow down my PC From Loading up just because I have to click continue, if I want steam to start as default, or Disable UAC. This is Dumb...

    Second Issue...

APB Has Spyware, This is right Folks, and I am not kidding, Please read before you talk crap...

It uses a program Called Punk Buster, Also Known as an Anti Cheat System. When I downloaded APB, I was not aware this game used such software, and it installed it on to my computer without me having to accept any agreement by APB, I only accepted a Steam Agreement, And did not have to accept one from the Creator OF APB at all, at which point their service Installed  other things without Consent.

That is right, they  Modified Physx Drivers, and Installed Punk Buster, without my express Consent, I could sue them if I wanted, although No Damage done, because again I am a PC tech, and I can fix anything if it should happen.

Here is my main issue with it. Even though I can bypass APB by simply going to the folder and running the Updater instead of through Steam Specifically, I have to also run that as an administraitor so it can run Punk Buster, But Punk Buster gives me serious issues, please read below for more details.

    **Quote From F.A.Q**

Is this new stuff going to make my computer slower?

Every running service, program and driver consumes computer resources. All PunkBuster components are designed to be efficient in that regard. When not playing a PunkBuster enabled game, the PunkBuster services are in "sleep mode" which means they are idling and waiting for a game with PunkBuster to be fired up. While playing on a PunkBuster enabled server, the new PunkBuster components are designed to use as much spare cpu power as is available during game play without draining too much power that would be used by the game itself. Newer systems having multiple cpu or a multi-core cpu provide an additional efficiency boost for the new components.

I am sure I can get this game to play okay on my computer, and Limit punkbuster to what it can do on my computer, so that I can run my  other games at the same time, However my concern is how this will have an effect on other Individuals who have bought, or played this game without knowledge of this application being installed. Punk Buster in General Will slow down your computer a Hell of a lot, especially if you are trying to play  like 5 games at once normally like I do, I like to run Second Life Twice in a row,  and Leave one of my Free to play games running mining or something like Karos, while I play another game usually 100 Lag Free, However with Punk Buster, I will be lucky if I can even do this properly.

I suggest that they do the following.

    1. Fix an agreement so that people have to see it, because I agree to nothing when I installed, and People could take Legal Actions even if their software did nothing to their pc, they could claim it did, and sue saying so, as they did not see or accept an agreement.

    2. They need to Remove PunkBuster, This is a piece of crap which does not do any good really, or at least inform people of such on their site before buying such...

    3. Fix it so it does not have to be run as admin on Steam, and give issues using a Steam Launcher. Only acception is to do it manually as admin.

man crap like this needs to be deleted.

    Amateur PC Tech ftl.

Also screaming about sueing them, they'll probably win without even having to step into court. If a lawyer saw ur case he'd toss it out the window.

Stopped reading here. I'm just so glad you're a PC tech though, because punk buster is some real harmful spyware /sarcasm

I normally don't post to flame people, but come on. Really? I could care less if you're a PC tech (everyone calls themselves that nowadays and then calls support anyway) and anybody thats played online fps before knows what punk buster is. I've never had a problem with punk buster slowing my computer down (nor heard of anyone having that problem for that matter), only minor issues during installs. My most recent is when bad company 2 came out and it didn't want to update.

And can you call yourself a real PC tech if you're still running on vista? I think most people know its a piece of garbage.

    /rantoff

Whatever you think of his argument, you should have read further and saw that the crux of his argument is that this is additional software that is not included in a disclosure agreement, viz. it is definitionally spyware. This is his problem, the fact that he is finding that the inclusion of it slows his system is a secondary problem and is obviously in combination with his other programmes and not simply Punk Buster.

I'll be blunt: don't be an asshole. The OP was doing his best to warn people of spyware and instead of arguing against him you come off with some sort of ad hominem attack. Granted, calling you out is much the same but I am presenting a counter-argument first and calling you out second. If you aren't going to post something relevent and useful there is no reason to post, period.

(1)TL:DR must be your way of saying that thinking hurts. Then again, this may explain why it looks like you responded to the post without using your brain.
    (2) It's not about community, is it? You just have nothing better to do.

anybody who has an ounce of sense or experience knows punkbuster is bad news, i'll be avoiding this game.

  • IrishoakIrishoak Member Posts: 633

I've had PunkBuster installed on my computer(s) for years, even when it was dubious at best. PunkBuster has never touched me in an inappropriate way. This thread, the Op and everything about it is so much awesome I had to comment.

  • GibboniciGibbonici Member UncommonPosts: 472

Same here, I don't see the issue.  In my experience games running Punkbuster are better than ones that don't for the simple reason that it weeds out a lot of the hackers. I wouldn't touch an FPS type game that didn't have Punkbuster or some other anti-cheat system.

There's very little system overhead with PB and I've had absolutely no issues with it in all the years I've used it. And that's quite some years.

of all the things punkbuster does, preventing hacking is not chief among them.

  • TheMinnTheMinn Member Posts: 397

i don't care. the game sucks. if you all want to play it obviously you have the right too. most will leave, some will stay, we've all heard this before. the game does not take still....it takes fast movements with a mouse. you've played GTA right? even if you think it's amazing (and it is) it does not work for an "MMO". I'm happy I was able to try it....I prefer Aion, DF, FE, over this. And I'm not a troll and you did just read what I said right...the game sucks....
