Personally I think being sold off was probably the best thing that could have happened to this game, Why? Well other than the patching system (which stinks for those that don't know) this is an excellent client! Excellent graphics and a good user interface! The games coming out now can still barely match it for graphics. If they were to say redo the game top to bottom and slap a new name on it they could release it and most people wouldn't know the difference. Of course, they would have to make it barely recognizable as Horizons and rename it...
That player crafting thing was the worst decision they could have made. Since there is no-one in the game if you start playing and need a spell or something good luck! Best of luck too it though, too good an engine to sit unused..

Are you taking the mickey?
It uses an inefficient gfx engine, most people who played it will know full well of the lag generated by porting a few times and going from one end of Tazoon to the other. Also combat lag is diabolical at times.
Since the gfx engine is no longer being developed by the people who made it, Tulga have their work cut out.
Horizons isn't dead yet it is however in an irreversible coma.
personally I think they are best to let the game die and make a new one. get a new engine that doesn't have a bad memory leek. I cant tell you how many times I've gone through the taz portal and had to reboot cause the lag was just to bad. As a flying dragon I would try and fly everywhere just to avoid the portals. One thing I will say they did a great job on making dragons the flying rocks but on the other hand they suck. I mean you only get 1 adventure class and one crafting class. where the bipeds can switch from all kinds of classes. Thats why almost all the high lvl dragon are gone. Well I guess I mean that almost every one is gone from the game now.
Still waiting for a new game to come out I hope DnL will be a good game
The games coming out now can still barely match it for graphics.
Games coming out?
WoW has better graphics, and far more variety, EQ2 has VASTLY better graphics. Guild Wars and Dark and Light will be out soon, and they will be even better.
Great engine? The engine sucks.
But worst of all, the engine does not have an effective line of sight detection system. Hence you can shoot a monster through a wall. To prevent exploits monsters do not have collision detection, thus they can walk through walls. For this simple reason there are no dungeons, and very few underground areas, all of which have no monsters to fight so exploring them is pointless.
As for what's wrong with HZ. I posted elsewhere. Far too many things to list again. If it survives with it's dwindling, deluded player base, it will be a LONG time before HZ comes any where near close to being a contender.
um...
The graphics engine has NOTHING to do with mobs being able to walk though walls. This isn't LoS. A lack of LoS is when a tree 500m away, that is hidden behind 3 mountains and a major city, renders. HZ has LoS (sorta). If you can't see a tree because it is hidden behind another object (or the ground), it doesn't render. (this was not the case at launch due to bugs with the client. This was fixed... 6? months ago. Big FPS improvement when this happened let me tell you)
Renderwise HZ is still kinda weird though. All objects have both sides of themselves rendered, even when you can't see one side at all (IE inside of mobs, inside of walls, the other side of the ground. I know. I think it's weird too. I wonder if FPS would double if this was fixed? You'd be rendering exactly half as much stuff). If you can see even the smallest part of an object, the entire object renders fully.
Now, that aside. Mobs can walk though walls. Nothing to do with line of sight. This happens because the server side world model is 2-D (read that again, not client, server). There is no third dimension at all. So where you see a hill or a wall, the mob sees only flat ground. Very strange. There are some interesting workarounds that have been discussed, but TulgAE would probably rather put time into completing the server side World Model than into working around an incomplete code.
Because of this (client has 3-D world model, server has 2-D world model) HZ can't have dungeons, or any true underground fighting areas, because no mob could enter them. All mobs exist at Z-Axis=0 at all times. They can't go underground, and they can't spawn underground. Because for them, there IS no underground.
EQII graphics suck btw:P. Cool water though:)
And because server is 2D, client is 3D. You can "instruct" client to disable certain components. Look at these links.
Fun on the beach
(Notice there is no water and few structures about)
Mine all mine!
(Notice the fact the 'cliff' to get to top mine is made non-existent)
Look ma I can 'swim'!
(Notice how you are able to swim with fish and RUN underwater)
For your own sanity do not play this game.
None of these are big deals. Since running takes longer than porting, there is really no point to making these "adjustments". So why bother? If a hack doesn't gain you anything, there is no point to using it.
PS (while running underwater was useful right after release to reach new lands, this has since been rectified. After all, dragons can fly over the water. All new lands are made inaccessable on the server until they are released.)
Of course you are right gopher it is no big deal that you can get to Aughundell iron field or granite field from the shrine in less than one 1 minute.
It is no big deal that players can get to kion volcano from the shrine in 40 seconds,
It is no big deal that players can walk through walls and run about with fish,
it is no big deal that players can scale mountain's as if they weren't there.
It is no big deal that players were running underwater without running out of breath right after release and can still do so.
Why isn't it a big deal? Not for your reasons but because it's all a moot point anyway as only a handful of people still play...
I don't want to feed the troll, but here I go!
No one uses these exploits. Does that tell you something oh smart one? Those fields are EASILY reachable. There is no where in the entire game that can't be reached VERY quickly. an extra 30 seconds means next to nothing. Especially when gaining that extra 30 seconds kills your client preformance (LOL, and saying that with HZ is really something, since you get such low FPS in the first place;))
No I'm not a troll gopher, you just fail to see that this shouldn't be possible in the first place if Horizons was a well designed game.
You don't want to feed "the troll", but you do anyway?
I'm merely stating a different opinion to you and you label me one in a weak attempt to discredit me, I think you lost all credibility when you said EQ2 graphics sucked...
Have you seen EQII graphics? Or are you just talking out of your ass? They are very... strange. Not well put together. Oh they look ok. Any company with infinte pockets can make graphics that look ok. But they don't look good. They look - boring. Yes. That's the word I meant:). Boring. That discribes the entire game in fact hehe.
EDIT: I predict that game will lose players faster than any game since oh horizons LOL
I have seen Everquest 2 graphics since I play it on a daily basis, you are the one talking out of your ass!
Are you seriously comparing Everquest 2 to Horizons now? You think Everquest 2 is boring compared to Horizons, now I know you have no sense now! Fine, defend Horizons made by monkeys with a server population of 300 and a 2 year old graphics engine, the company that made the gfx engine no longer exists and Tulga don't seem to have a clue how to reverse engineer it or the financial muscle to build a new one. Even the official Horizons forums have threads of current players bored out of their minds.
Make all the predictions you like about EQ2, it is not going anywhere.
I predict you will reply with equal vitriol to this thread spouting other nonsense, least see who's prediction comes true first!
Fine, derail this thread and evade the fact that Horizons is infinitely worse than Everquest 2 will ever be. You have a very poor judgment of what a good game is, both technically and gameplay wise.
Do yourself a favour before you reply and make yourself out to be a bigger moron than you already have done and actually think about what, if anything, you are going to write. You never know you might just redeem yourself.
burn horizons and move on to something else or just stay with horizons now a days I just dont care for this game anymore
wow is where I'll be
maybe I will see some of yous there
What to do with HZ?
Tulga are making a fair stab at saving it, and then reviving it, but they are on borrowed time.
http://www.mmogchart.com/
Check out the latest slump in HZ subs. I don't know if AE/Tulga were/are making a profit from the current sub base, but is has dwindled further. They must halt the slide first.
Then...
They do things differently in Korea, where most of the Lineage 1 and 2 players hail from.
You buy time to use a computer in an internet cafe and get more or less free access to games like Lineage. Moreover there is probably not the same level of competetion as there is in the US or EU, which is why their inclusion in the chart is dubious at best, and comes with an explanation no the site.
As for Horizons, I have not logged in since November. I watch the boards and wait.
