Hiya all,
I've been thinking about making a multiplayer web-based game, about the Romans. I haven't decided whether it will be a strategy game or a RPG, and I have a few ideas for each system on how I'd implement it.
Of course it's going to deviate slightly from history, if I decide to go down the strategy route it would be something like having control over a legion, you have to defeat other legions (other players) or barbarians (AI). If I made a RPG, it would be the player being a gladiator and rising up in skill so he could get rewards in the arena.
So the point of this post is to just ask for some thoughts which you might have on these two ideas on possible improvements, alternative ideas, or any comments really. Thanks!

The idea I have in mind is going to be set in a classical Roman period, rather than a futuristic, invented one. It's also not going to be a huge commercial thing, just a free game which you spend maybe 1/2 hour a day playing.

Chris,
You may want to check out Roma Victor. It is an historically authentic recreation of the Roman world c. 180AD. And it will be free to play, though you must purchase the game or activation key online.

At the least it may give you some ideas for your game. It's a great community over there, so dont be afraid to post.
