This looks like a hyped up browser game atm... Actually it is mostly likley a hyped up browser game. To bad i was kinda hoping for a more gritty and in your face kind of game.

This have been a good conversation

Not really flaming, but think about this for a moment.  Blizzard ripped off Games Workshop.  Warcraft and Starcraft both pulled off of WH/WH40K respectively.  So to some, it will look like any game is ripping off WoW... when it is simply the other way around.

It was a trip when people called WAR a WoW clone... such lulz...

WoW was originally made for the Warhammer IP, Games Workshop backed out at the last minute (owned?) and lost themselves a shit ton of money for it.

The graphics aren't "wow-ish" they are clearly "warhammer-ish". Go look at a tabletop army, or anything games workshop for warhammer, and you will see that it always has this kind of tone with it.

I am so relieved it's going to be fps style and not auto-target

  • ZyllosZyllos Member UncommonPosts: 537

I can definitally see why people say it looks like WoW but that just means it's stylized.

The Warhammer 40k style is still there, the Great Unclean One does look a bit cartoony but if you look at the actual Great Unclean One model, it looks a bit cartoony itself so...

    Great Unclean One

Either way, there is not enough here to get any type of answer other than they are working along nicely as a product.

I think we will be seeing much more about this in the coming months.

MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.

Woah momma! Looking like a pretty sweet game. As long as there is a micro mode that lets you control the action from a one person perspective and not just macro full army engineering I'm definitely down. I really liked the table top game back when but only because the pace was controlled. Never been a big fan of RTS games as I only cared for fast paced games when the options are fewer.

But that was then and this is now. Blizzard are finally releasing a non-WoW game again this year and their next gen mmo will be unveiled next year. I just think after WAR nobody wants this type of stuff anymore. Gaming has moved on.

i noticed that too.  While i think it looked a bit similar to WAR/WoW i did see quite a bit of effort in some of the environments to show a bit more darkness and grittyness (what the universe is known for).

Originally i was worried that they would go for a far too bright/colourful style but it seems they have only just saved it with their environments.

I hate to break it to you guys, but warhammer is not WoWish....WoW is warhammerish. Warhammer Fantasy Battle came out in 1983. The miniatures looked very similar to the art style used in both Warhammer Online and this new Warhammer 40k mmo. Warcraft (the grandfather of WoW) was released in 1994.

    Check the Wikis

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move. - Douglas Adams

Warhammer board game is nothing like WoW or WAR. Not sure how you can even make that comparison.

Overall, lore including races and how their history plays out is very warhammer/wk40. That was very clear to me too, the first time i played Warcraft: Orcs&Humans and every title that followed. Sure they added some twists and other things, but it was a pretty blunt rip off in my eyes having played both the table top games and Blizzards "impressions" of them.

Force once i´m actualy also interested in Blizzards "Next Gen" MMO, because it will show if they are able to come up with something great on their own. (Diablo was made by Condor, later bought and renamed to Blizzard North...)

Anyway enough with this WoW crap, i think the trailer looks great and looks like W40k. I too hope there will be more "dark" zones etc. but this was just a glimpsy. First ingame footage usualy never looks that great also, because the details, shadow systems and the fine tuning are often worked on later. There is no telling how this game will be  i´m hoping for more information soon.

woot? that's it? a trailer? and "yes, there will be a 40k mmo"? wtf? where's the meat?

what about races, classes, PvP, PvE, char design, instanced, non-instanced... ANYTHING!

I'm disappointed to say the least!

    I need moar info!

Looks like WAR in space indeed. I must say I profoundly dislike the Warhammer visual style. I know gameplay blah blah... but I could NEVER play a game looking like that exxagerated, comical and bulky Warhammer style. Each to his, but this so isn't my pair of shoes. It looks like one of these bizarre young male's anabolica dreams, guys with pumped up uber shoulderpads, heug mechas (what do THEY compensate for) and all those macho techno aggro dreams I so deeply find BORING. Pew pew pew with those uber buffed up uber-men... not for me. I prefer grace, elegance and style over this kid macho heaven. =P

(How anyone can say this trailer is better than SWTORs as a sidenote is totally beyond me. This is merely a gameplay nitpick. *shrug*)

"This type of stuff?" What type of stuff? Fantasy? Sci-fi? No, I can assure you, both of those will be around in gaming for a very long time to come.

Are you talking about Warhammer 40k? That's why Dawn of War II was met with great success, they're developing a Warhammer 40k RPG for console called Space Marine, and an Ultramarines movie is coming out? Nevermind this MMO? No, I don't think we're tired of 40k, either. In fact, I think it's starting to finally become more popular. It could be a short-lived fling, though. We'll see. But with companies like Relic and THQ leading the way and pumping out quality games, I have hope.

Yunbei - sorry Space Marines don't do ballet while they fight with their 40-foot long swords and cute fluffy animals that shoot laser beams from their butts.

Very very very excited for this game! This will be another one of those games just like ToR that I do not care what any of you say based upon a "bad" review. I will be playing this game for sure.

Also at the IG balance comment. I'm sure they will figure it out. Especially seeing how IG is obviously not super human. THQ always gets it right.

Also at the Eldar comment. The eldar have such a wide variation of units and ex archs, I'm sure they want to take their time to get it right, especially with their craftworld. No need to rush something good :), even though I'm a Die hard Salamnders and Blood angels fan.

I just want to make a Howling Banshee so bad, sounds like I will have to wait a bit for that.  But for now I have no problem what so ever in enjoying the game and biding my time.

This is exactly what i wanted when they first announced a Warhammer mmo years ago... Sure, it looks like wow.  It's an mmo, they'll all kinda look alike.  But it also looks fresh, original, and has its own style.

This definitely goes on my list of games that might not suck.

  • majimaji Member UncommonPosts: 2,091

    Looks like fun.

    • concept art and announcement

    • screenshots

    • videos

    • list with features

    • early beta testing

    • many features get scrapped or simplified

    • preorders are getting sold

    • more beta testing

    • more features get scrapped or simplified

    • lifetime subs are sold

    • release

    • promises to implement some of the missing features

    • half a year to fix the worst bugs and make it playable

    • first small content patch

    • item mall gets implemented

    • more bug fixing

    • expansion with tyranids announced, that will cost quite a lot of $$$ and bring some of the promised features back

    • ....

The game looks interesting. But... most MMORPGs that are now released suck pretty much. I'll be reading news about the game when I see some, but I'd be surprised if this game wouldn't be a disappointment.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Was there even one female in that trailer?  Can't wait, hope that isn't all the factions planned for release...

  • LeetheLeethe Member UncommonPosts: 893

Good lord do I hate this IP. But it has guns!!! and lots of them by the look of it. I cannot resist MMOs with guns. And mechs. Oh dear.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

WoW was originally made for the Warhammer IP, Games Workshop backed out at the last minute (owned?) and lost themselves a shit ton of money for it.

Umm Games Workshop didnt cut out at the last minute, Warhammer was around for 25 + years and then Blizz hired an art designer GW let go and he took the designs to Blizz.

For those mmorpg.com readers who care I will try to set the record straight.

Back in the day Blizzard approached GW with a prototype game based very much on the Warhammer IP. That prototype ended up being Warcraft. While it contained public domain fantasty archtypes like Orcs, Trolls and Elves etc much of the aesthetics and mannerisms were very distinctly GW (especailly the cockney Orc songs included in the 1989 GW board game "Oi! Dat's My Leg!" whose characteristics permeated both Warhammer and 40k Orcs since the begging albeit with some evolution over time )

Oi! Dats My Leg! - while not the inspiration for Warcraft, the song tape from it illustrates the Orc and Troll mannerisms characteristic of Warhammer races, one of many things unique to GW used in Warcraft. Plus its cool game history ;p

    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5690/oi-dats-my-leg

Bryan Ansell, Games Workshop Managing Director at the time, decided to pass on Blizzard's offering, figuring that GW could do a better version in house and of course retain control of all aspects (as GW had a history of doing, usually resulting in crappy IP-based releases i.e. Space Hulk PC game, until they became publicly owned). This choice, as history shows, came back to bite GW in the ass, and Ansell was not too happy about it. Insult was added to injury when GW tried and failed to successfully sue Blizzard. GW ultimately lost the lawsuit because they could not claim ownership of Orcs, Elves and other fantasy archetypes.

The claim that Bliz hired artists from GW did not happen until World of Warcraft 15 years later with artist Mark Gibbons. The "borrowing" of Warhammer IP art and ideas for Warcraft being established before or around 1990.

WIth that history in mind its obvious that Starcraft has it roots in Space Marines, Genstealers and Eldar.

All said, Warcraft has long since left its Warhammer origins nest and created their own well documented fantasy mythology that has its own life and does well on its own. Time to let it rest.

I worked for Games Workshop during that time and knew Bryan and others in his circle.

I have a strange premonition of seeing 99% of people playing this game as Space Marines. I suspect much faction imbalance.
