Yes there is PvP, There are 3 zones called the Prime Roots. High leveled mobs live there, and the best harvest materials can be found there. Players kan kill each other there.
You also have arenas where you can battle other guild etc. And the upcoming feature is that you can hold outpost with your guild and defend it agains others who are trying to steal it from you. You can build various buildings on the outposts.
PvP is really fun. I've managed to gank many a n00b in the Prime Roots and it's been a total blast. If you hop back in, give me your character name so I know not to kill you down there *evil grin*
A word of warning though if you play on the NA server. The community in general there frowns upon PvP. The population is low and the majority feel PvP is a waste of time. So people like Nounderpants would be hunted down if word got out someone was doing things like that.
Personally I don't mind it as it's clearly meant to be an area of contention for the best materials... however we have so few high lvl crafters on the server that's it almost not worth causing trouble over as it may drive some of them away from putting things on the open market(which is already a problem).
I had just logged in to play and a player wanted to PvP with me. I was suprised , so we agreed to revive and went for it. He was using magic and i was using melee. It was great! lasted quite long. He kept doing magic like slow and rot on me. He ran away a bit. and i would keep crawling up to him as he was casting another spell and hit him with my hardest hit. Went on like that but he eventually won. Was a fun PvP battle.
Much better compared to my SWG experience where really experinced players just keep asking to duel newbs so they could get rating up. I did it one day and got wooped. that was fun.
The poeple who play Ryzom on the north american server are actively working on bringing more people around to experience this awesome game. Sure the game has little problems like a bug here or there, but its biggest problem, especially on the NA server, is the lack of people. So, instead of warning people about this and discouraging from joining the Saga themselves, I encourage everyone to try the free two week trial and add to the *small* but great, friendly, community.
I agree the NA server is a bit PvP adverse. We underwent a major major issue around PvP about 2 months ago. However things have settled down and PvP does exist and is part of the gameplay. It is not possible to PvP in the open areas by just ganking somone. You may challenge someone to a duel, however it must be accepted.
The great thing is that the community has enough sense to work through these things. Give the trial a try (www.ryzom.com) It is my first mmorpg, and I have been at it 4 months now after being totally hooked 2 days into my trial. Enjoy.
It doesnt need a CC, there are 2 trials, one without a CC needed and one with CC that has some extra features, like acces to forum and more. CC=CreditCard (for all you n00bs out there )
