With the popularity of "Red Dead Redemption" I could definitely see a western-themed mmo eventually being put into the works. Personally, I think it's a fantastic idea and I'm a little surprised we haven't had at least one yet.
The market has become so saturated with swords and sorcery that it's rare to see much else crop up. The genre could use another breath of fresh air and something like this could potentially do the trick. Here's hoping.
Maybe set it in the Old West of the U.S and have factional warfare between Americans, Natives and Mexicans.
Hmmm, on that note, perhaps a Wild West MMO isn't such a good idea in the interest of public relations. Whoever makes it could find themselves in a legal battle with regards to racial prejudice. You can just imagine the outcries.
My TV is almost always on Turner Classic Movies, especially when western marathons are on. I love classic movies like The Gunslinger, and even some newer ones like 3:10 to Yuma.
As mentioned above though, the reason they probably haven't made any is because of the views back when Westerns were popular. Even watching the classics today, I can just imagine the outcry if someone released the exact same movie and script today. People would have a cow.
You could do black hats vs white hats per say. Outlaws vs locals and law enforcement. With all races able to be chosen on both sides.
I also remember something about a western with zombies and vampires or something.
You know, THAT could work around the whole "race discrimination" issue. As for the zombie / vampire thing, I'm not so sure. Yes, it would add different mobs to the mix, but theres something about zombies / vampires in the Wild West that just seems wrong to me.

This is exatly why I don't think a western MMO will ever be made. The wild west wasn't a PC place.
Unless they simply made it something like lawmen vs. outlaws.
I guess you could do like gang vs gang, just think "Gangs of New York" just western setting and rifles/pistols And I hope they use the Red Dead Redemption targeting
ooh i would sooo love to play a wild west MMO, play poker and all the mini games like red dead redemption has along with bounties that would be awesome.
Waited for years for someone to make an Old West MMO.
At the moment, the closest you will get is Fallen Earth. It's a Post Apoc MMO, but the setting makes it feel like an Old West MMO sometimes. You got Barren deserts, revolver, horses and even hats and dusters! Look it up if you want, it's P2P but well worth the money till a real Wild West MMO comes out.
i think a good wild west game would have to be rife with extreme genre stereotypes, which would be hard to do, as the genre thrives on...shall we say "racial profiling"

Well, as mentioned earlier, if ALL races could be ALL "classes" (one for a better term) then the MMO company could clear themselves of such legal and ethical issues.
I dont see race being an issue if you dont make it one.
You could easily have different factions based on criminals gangs and law enforcement.
Or even do factions based on political groups, that arent racially discriminant.
Mexico, America, and Outlaws could be groups....
Theres no reason all races could not be in any of these groups. Im sure there were white mercenaries working for mexico, just like there were mexicans working for the americans.
Sounds like a cool idea for a mmo. another mmo which could contain a Blacksmith. missed my smithy back from the good old Ragnarok days. yeah and no fancy mounts. just gonna be horses and carriages.

Yeah, somehow I don't think Blazing Saddles: The MMO would sit too well with most folks these days. Although it would be pretty damn funny.
I tell you i would absolutely love a western mmo. And with as big a hit as red dead redemption is i see no reason a company other than say EA and SOE or who ever that company that did star trek is, does not get thier hands on it.
played M59,UO,lineage,EQ,Daoc,Entropia,SWG,Horizons,Lineage2.EQ2,Vangaurd,Irth online, DarkFall,Star Trek and many others that did not make the cut or i just plain forgetting about.
Red Dead Redemption is a western game, doing quite well. I'm personally starting to get sick of the fantasy Korean type games, would love a good old western type MMO.

And the main reason it hasn't taken any real flack is because, even though they talk about the natives being "savages", they don't show it. Red Dead Redemption isn't the real "Old West", it's the turn of the century that came about after the "old west" we all think about happened.
I guarantee you, if they'd have set the time just a few years back and shown natives scalping white men and taking women for "squaws, or shown white men infesting blankets with smallpox to commit mass genocide against the natives, the game would have never made it past the first lawyers' desk.
Regardless of all those things being truthful and factual depictions, you would have lawsuits from every Native American tribe and civil liberties organization out there, if for no other reason than all the PC folks rather hide past atrocities and bury them rather than be faced with the grim reality and just moving on. Thsi si why my only response when someone tells me I need to be more "PC" is a hearty "Fuck you".

I wish. Deadwood is my favorite TV show ever. I'd love a good western mmorpg.

I dunno, it could be set in the early 1900's just like in RDR. That way the whole indian hunting etc would be over etc.
Could bring in some cool weaponry and other equipment. Maybe even an expansion that adds car mounts! xD

I would love to see a Western themed mmo, but as others have stated it might be somewhat problematic with the political climate being what it is.
It's strange, but I think we have actually regressed in racial relations over the last 20 years.
