  The Best?

  The best free online rpg that I know if is "The North".  It is a persistant world using Biowares "Aurora" toolkit (Neverwinter Nights).

  I have played this repeatedly over the years and find it to be as enjoyable as any commercial offering.. with the limitation of size and daily crashing of the server (an issue with the engine not the content).

  Anarchy online is probably the best free one after you get past the initial fee. Guild Wars might be another good one in the future as soon as you pay a one-time fee.

  Anarchy Online is probably the best free online game you may get temporarly.

  Making a high quality mmorpg and trying to make it free is like throwing cash away.

  The only thing to break even is to start charging people subscription fees.
