What are the most overhyped upcoming MMOs for you?
For me it's: SWTOR. I was excited about SWTOR because it's apperantly bringing good quests/storyline to MMORPGs. That was until I saw in-game footage and videos. 150 mil budget and the graphics are below average? The animations and world also look so bland. There will even be less incentive to group than previous MMOs, you have NPC companions. Look at this vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-suP_LKcQcU.. Everything dies in one shot, and all the vids are like that. Are you kidding me? That can work in some games like FPS and action RPGs(like Diablo 2), depending on the combat, but it doesn't work in MMORPGs. I think SWTOR will just be WoW in space with better quests and without the end-game. There's plenty of great singleplayer RPGs I still haven't played, why play SWTOR when I can play them?
TSW. Firstly, it's made by Funcom. It's gunna have a bad launch and then lose most of it's subs in the first month. Secondly, it's going to be AoC with a different theme. There's nothing telling us otherwise.
Warhammer 40k. Again, simply because they haven't said it will be any different from the current crop of MMOs like GW2, Rift and WoD have done. The hype is all based on the IP just like the last few MMOs have been. WAR40k will be no different from WAR, STO, whatever.

I have yet to think that any of them have been "overhyped" as they haven't had the chance to live up to the hype yet --- they're still in development.
I do say that the hype some people have surrounding certain games is a little over the top. My picks are:
SWTOR: Some people do think this game is going to be something groundbreaking. It will be a great game, and it will do amazingly well, but keep in mind, its just a game, and it follows BioWares path.
GW2: So many people are getting hyped about what this game has to offer, yet, many of those people are bewildered by buzz words. People must realize that, eventhough these words make the game sound revolutionary, when you pay attention to the developers explaining the mechanics, its going to be just another game with exciting features and pitfalls that go into their design choices.
TSW: Many people love hearing how Funcom is going to innovate the genre by removing levels and adding more twitch style gameplay, but you have to keep in mind that this is Funcom. They have the ability to produce great games, but they are also over zealous with their feature list. What they promise cannot always be what they perform.
Those are my 3 for most "hyped" and why they shouldn't be as "hyped" as they are. They are also the three games I'm looking forward to the most.
This one is easy. SWTOR and then following that will be Warhammer 40k.
SWTOR: Guess what, it's just gonna be another game. However, it will be quite fun and enjoyable for those who gets this simple fact. Expect two dozen dedicated haters to follow this game after they find out they don't immediately become the most sexy thing for the opposite sex for playing a vido game.
WoW:Cataclysm: Not an MMO, but an expansion. Seems to me to be paying 50 bucks for a new 'challenge' which will be overcome by many in a few weeks will turn out disappointing quickly. Queue the goldsellers.
GW2: Is it even an MMO?
FF(S don't know the iteration): Thusly, yet another emo-MMO for the spoiled brat masses who thinks a day without McDonalds signals the seven horsemen.
WH40k: Look at how great WAR just did with a 2 faction PvP game! Or maybe not..
TSW: Will release too buggy for most people to stand due to astronomical system req's.
I forgot all the indy MMO's by purpose. They will suck tremendously.
You need to get your facts together on that...
In opposition to the orriginal GW, GW2 will be a true MMO. with many fresh and new things incorporated.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Although I hope I am wrong...DC Universe Online.
Yay, finally a single player MMO with the holy trinity!
Im looking forward to guild wars 2, i dont believe its been that overhyped, its nice to see they are finally coming back with a sequel that doesnt have a subscription, which is nice to see for once.
Star wars overhyped, simply because of the fan base surrounding it.
Warhammer40k: dont compare it to WAR so much, in 40k ive read they are focusing on having more of a PvE game as well as pvp. While WAR was solely about pvp as the quest system well...wasnt that great....but the pvp was amazing (until the new egypt area was released, then i quit because PvP stopped and everyone was grinding there for pve eqipment)
Surprised APB hasnt been mentioned, since a lot of people are thinking its gonna flop like Crimecraft, specially since it has no pve whatsoever and has no story. But i believe there will probably be in game events now and again and its only in beta, still waiting for it to be released in 15 days
At the moment, SWTOR appears to be the one that's getting the most hype, even though it doesn't really appear to do much more than provide the same type of gameplay we've been seeing over the last several years, just with a Star Wars skin.
GW2 is pretty high in the hype category as well. Though they seem to have a few newer ideas, I'm not sure at this point that newer equals better, and a lot of the rest appears to be a rehash as well.
I guess we'll see.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
SWTOR, Warhammer 40k are the ones that come to mind. I guess GW 2 could be in there but it wont get as much fanboy nerds screaming about the greatness of it before release like the former two games I've mentioned.
YEas its SW:TOR.
Surprisingly little attention is being given to DC ONline ...perhaps thats because there is little room for a 3rd (4th?) Super HEro MMO (HOnestly they all look the same to me)
HOwever, The luke warm reaction to SW:TOR thus far has given me some cause for reassurance. HYpe is a bad thing sometimes, and I am hoping that the majority of MMO players approach SW:TOR with a more realistic attitude (Better for everyone that way)
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I feel the main problem with the Hype on TOR is that its started way too far out from release, its been hyping for about a year already.
DCUO will be the 3rd super hero MMO. I don't feel theres much hype surrounding it right now... I wish there was.. but I feel theres still much about the game I don't know, so that leaves a lot less to get excited about. I kind of wish there was MORE hype generating on DCUO.
Hype is bad for games. Companies hype their games to sell more boxes and get an immediate return.
.
Thing is, you can hype a game so much that players can't help but be disappointed.
.
I think that if Warhammer and AoC never hyped their games, they'd have more subs right now. But both hyped their games to astronomical limits.

SWTOR, right on the heels of STO. Interesting to watch one overly-hyped game after the next, only to watch the ensuing nose-dive post launch.
I've gotta invest in more popcorn in advance.
I like how this is suppose to be your own list of overhype games and fanbois have to come and defend their game here instead of just giving their list.
so far, the only game i see any kind of major hype for is SWTOR.
Almost nothing is known about 40k and most people don't even know what the acronym TSW stands for.
There is some hype about the new FF game, but that seems to be only among it's fans.

Anymore I don't feel like any game lives up to the hype, I got burned bad on WAR, but I am looking forward to 40K. I agree though, SWTOR will probably not live up to the hype.

I say we strike all users from the site for not being MMOs.
So thats wat u guys were talking about.

2 Cinematic trailers (Done by another studio and showing 0 gameplay or game assets) and people are claiming it's going to be the greatest game ever.
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Well, to be honest, there really isn't any dev team out there overhyping themselves. Not to the extent Mythic did before WAR came out. I think people are looking at SWTOR at the next big game, and may or may not be sorely disappointed. SWTOR looks extremely average to me, at least from the vids they have shown us.
GW2 is getting a lot of fan attention too, and the videos we've seen are fantastic (with the exception of the stupid voice acting). I think the "dynamic content" aspect of GW2 is getting overhyped a bit and will be little more than scripted events with predetermined outcomes that can be midly effected by player interaction. Once those events are learned, people will be able to recreate whatever outcome they wish though.
FFXIV is getting attention amongst FF fans in general, but there doesn't seem to be a huge buzz around the game.
TSW is more like a darkhorse. People who know about it are pretty excited, but most don't seem to know anything about the game.
DCU is going to be punished a bit by CO. Super Heros mmos have gotten something of a bad wrap, especially after the CO fiasco. DCU is going to have to prove itself to be more than just another super hero mmo.
Tera is similar to TSW, where those who know are excited, but most seem to be fairly oblvious to its existence.
Honestly, there isn't a mmo out there that is being heavily self-promoted. Various dev teams are releasing information, but they aren't really putting on the hard sell yet. Hopefully, the up and comming mmos will just speak for themselves and won't need a lot of spin or double speak to get box sales. The fanbase is a bit more reserved as well. After being burned by AoC, WAR and Aion (to a lesser extent), people are going to be hard pressed to get overexcited about anything. Sure you got the rabid haters or fanboys, but the overall feel of the community seems to be, "we're not holding our breath". Which is good, perhaps we can judge games on their merits, instead of their empty promises.
I think Guild Wars 2 hype is justified. The game as a huge following, and don't forget, it's being developed by ex vanilla WoW devs.
But most overhyped? I'd have to say SW:TOR closely followed by TERA.
There is no overhype, just unrealistic expectations.

Most hyped is probably Swtor, with that kind of budget.
Star Wars has the bigger advertizing push but Guild Wars 2 has the more rabid fan base. Both of these games are being way more hyped than any other game in recent history.
FFXIV is just a disaster in the making if anyone has bothered to read up on their NDA leaks.
There were only two MMOs I was really following closely at E3 because both of them delivered with playable demos. No hype here, these games speak for themselves and many people walked away impressed. So by this time next year when the hype machines are all burned out these two games will be the big winners. The two MMOs I am refering to are Tera and Vindictus.
