Star Wars has the bigger advertizing push but Guild Wars 2 has the more rabid fan base. Both of these games are being way more hyped than any other game in recent history.
FFXIV is just a disaster in the making if anyone has bothered to read up on their NDA leaks.
There were only two MMOs I was really following closely at E3 because both of them delivered with playable demos. No hype here, these games speak for themselves and many people walked away impressed. So by this time next year when the hype machines are all burned out these two games will be the big winners. The two MMOs I am refering to are Tera and Vindictus.
I said GW2 and SWTOR as well
but what were your reasoned opinon?
Mine for SW was just the hype, and little gameplay knowledge. Too much hype going into the fact the developers are Bioware.
Story Focused MMOs dont work well. Gameplay is the most important.
As for GW2
the hype over the Event system, is just that, HYPE.
Notice, that its worded the same way DARKFALL's developers talked about their amazing npc AI that could also take bases, and make bases.
If they suck after launch then yea, they were overhyped. What if your pick for most overhyped turns out to be the greatest MMO of all time? Then wouldn't it be considered UNDER-hyped?
"We have barred the gates, but can not hold them for long... They have taken the Bridge and the Second Hall... We can not get out. The end comes. Drums, drums in the deep. They are coming..."
They are all overhyped but I think the media is way overdoing it with The Old Republic. The Old Republic will be a very good mmo but the media will insist its the next best thing since sliced bread.
I actually think the the hype level of MMOs have gone down a lot. I remember how upcoming games were hyoped here just a few years ago, like WAR, AoC, DFO and worst of all: Aion.
Sure, there is some hype over TOR, GW2 and FF XIV but nothing like that, people have probably gotten more realistic after some bad launches.
I don't think it is because of the company, it is just because of the following of the IP and what people are hoping it may become.
GW2
I hate to be a blind follower, but I actually think this one might deserve some hype. Of course it depends if the game is launched as depicted...
Had to toss this in.
Underhyped game...
Vindictus (AKA Mabonogi Heroes 2)
I think this is a sleeper, but I don't think it will deliver all the things atleast I'm wanting from a Action/Skill based MMO. Mark my words! This will be a very very popular f2p game though.
***Edited***
One thing I have noticed is that I haven't seen jumping in Vindictus. Also your active defense button is spacebar. So I'm wondering if there is no jumping. To me, this breaks immersion. Maybe I'm just strange, but it does....
It is one of the main reasons I could not stand Guild Wars...
Meh. Who needs graphics in a MMO ? As long as the content rocks.
About overhyped:
I recenty checked out the Darkfall forums and laughed my ass off. They have an open skill system ... which means EVERYBODY can learn ALL SKILLS. Even worse, the game is about raising the Vitality stat because it gives hitpoints ... OMG.

I agree with this. A lot have learned not to get burned by hype. Unfortunately that can give the impression that the industry is dieing down in general. But that's just a false impression and more of a sign that the industry as a whole is beginning to mature a little more.

All hype
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
FF14 because it cant possibly be as good as they make it look.
no UPCOMING mmo's are OVERHYPED.

Nah your not strange.
Jumping can add immersion, but it can also break it.
Using WoW as a example, people jump off the Zep when it gets close to the tower, isn't realistic, and to some that is immersion breaking.
Not being able to jump was annoying in GW, but not FFXI...
Anyway...
SWTOR is the most overhyped MMO at the moment.
I think the game is going good if not great, but the hype around it, is going to cause alot people to disapointed with it.

Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
TOR
IMO it will crash and burn just from the weight of its own hype.
Agreed +1
