Checked this out on the Escapist. Thought some of you Star wars fans who don't know about them yet may be interested.

Ever since I was Four years old I have always wanted my own lightsaber. When I first read through this article I was literaly foaming at the mouth at the prospect of owning one of these for my very own. Then I started thinking about how dangerous these things could be in the wrong hands........ummmmm....very dangerous?

Just bear in mind that a gun is far, far more dangerous.  This laser can BURN the skin, which means it isn't powerful enough to cut through skin.  The most dangerous thing about it would be that someone might be careless with it in a way they wouldn't be with a gun.  It is very unlikely it would kill anyone, but, as the article says, it could blind someone's eye (unlikely to blind both).

Just what we need. A dangerous "toy" available to the general public so some adolescent retard can go blind people with it for kicks.

They already do it with the readily available laser pointers.

I'm all for real life light sabers... but not when some one in the head gets their hands on it.

Not to be too neardy but I don't think a lightsaber is actually a laser, it has suspended plasma inside of it which makes it more of a "Heat" weapon, and this Super laser can't really be contained so it's like an infinite lightsaber.

So it's a blue laser pointer with the handle in the shape of a lightsaber handle. Oh, I'm sorry, a really powerful blue laser pointer. Ill stick to my green neon bulb incased in plexiglass :)

  • While I think its a cool thing and all, In no way shape or form do I want the public to beable to buy a class 4 laser. Imagin some kid getting their hands on it trying to burn things with it. You could do it from great distance since there is no way to make the beam stop.. and never even know who started a fire.

Like I said, cool little thing, but should everyone beable to own one? Hell no.

Get it while you can.  Supposedly anything above Class 1 laser will only be available with a permit.  FAA is pushing Congress hard on this law because of morons at airports using lasers on airplanes landing.

This should have the same regularions as any other industrial laser. We know there are people who are going to attack other people with it.

I was THIS close to buying one of those.  Had everything in the shopping cart and had my credit card out ready to purchase.  But when I really started thinking about it, and just how dangerous it was (like just shining it on a wall in your house and you simply SEEING the light it produces can literally blind you), I realized I don't want something like that.  Accidents happen, even when you are 100% sure you're going to be careful, and I'd hate to lose my eyesight, or cause someone else to.  So I closed the website and decided, no freaking way am I going to order one.

Another thing I thought about was if they are "so" dangerous, then I wouldn't doubt if the government tallies up the names of individuals who purchased one and starts paying a visit to their houses to confiscate the lasers.
