Let see... Well quite obviously there is no 1:1 clone of APB
but let list the games that are very much on MMO side, with character progression and cosmetic customisation + social areas + both PVE and PVP missions:
I had actually preorered APB off steam and cancelled the preorder yesterday after spending 10 hours in the keys to the city event. Really the game is a ton of fun, dont get me wrong, its just that there isnt a whole lot to do to warrent the $50 + monthy fee.
If and when the game drops in price I will most likely pick it up, and hopefully by then they have added chaos servers and turf wars.
Let see... Well quite obviously there is no 1:1 clone of APB

Battlefield series , MW series , Quake wars series , TF2 ... the list goes on
All these are either free or purchase games with no sub. ( yes GA has sub part, but its very much optional )
So I listed over 12 similar games that have no subscription. All are very good alternatives. (most are much better games too)
Why is average gamer going to choose APB with subscription over all these other games ?
You said why would a player pay to play APB when they can get the same for free. You haven't provided anything that delivers a similar experience or similar mechanics. Not only is there not anything that will deliver the same or relatively close to the same experience for free there isn't anything that will deliver it if you pay.
You listed 12 games that had very few similarities, not one came close to delivering even half the experience.
So if your doing posturing, care to actually back up your claim with something that would actually help your case? I mean by all means have the opinion you want and I won't try to tear it down, but if your going to try and tell me I am wrong in my opinion then you will have to back it up lol.
I played Global Agenda and it is what you tried to make this game out to be. It's a lobby with some game rooms basically and no I agree it doesn't warrant a monthly fee which is why I tried it and passed on it lol. So maybe you got the two mixed up lol.
Now keep in mind this time you need to try to find something that is relatively similar, don't just list off what ever pops in your head that has very little in common.
You know Lobotomist lets put it this way, we will simply have to agree to disagree. If you don't see a game that warrants a fee thats fine, it simply means you probably aren't a part of the target audience.
This game will appeal to those that simply are bored with the current MMORPG's out there. It will likely appeal to the creative types that find no means of expressing themselves with the current crafting systems in MMO's. It will likely appeal to those that enjoy PvP but simply don't want to deal with the random dice rolls and archaic turn based or cooldown based combat systems. It has a flexible enough payment option to appeal to a large number of people. Those that simply want to play once in awhile to kill some time when they are bored, it's competitively priced for those that wish for it to be a main, it's free for those that just want to hang out and socialize and customize stuff, it can even be free for those that are creative enough or like and know how to play the market.
The game has it's appeal, whether you see it or not. It's also obviously worth the fee's that it's charging because I've already met a ton that have pre-ordered and are looking forward to the game, if nothing else it certainly shows it's worth the initial buy for a lot of people.
So you have your opinion about it and I have mine. Regardless of how you may feel about the game or it's future there seems to be a fair amount of people interested in it. Your whole idea about the game not warranting a subscription fee that has been rehashed over and over about almost every existing MMO. People claim that UO with it's age doesn't warrant a subscription fee but guess what, there is still a fee and it still has a decent player base paying and playing regardless of what others feel or believe.
You said your piece and it hasn't and won't change my mind about the game, the only thing that can is the game itself. So save your breath (or fingers rather) and don't waste your time trying to convince me that I don't like the game as much as I think I do or that regardless of what I think, the game isn't worth what I think it is.
I've already pre-ordered and I plan on playing it until I no longer enjoy it, regardless of what you and your vast amount of experience in gaming and MMO's and your Crystal ball may say .
My friend told me about apb a couple months ago and was super excited about it. he showed me a trailer and I was rather unimpressed. A few days ago I saw apb on the mmorpg gamelist and after looking at "key to the city" thread I decided to get the beta. frankly, at the time i did not care much about the game and went to a movie instead of playing at first. The next day I woke up and was very bored from the tutorial. I did not even finish the tutorial before logging off to play basketball. The next day I started playing again and finished the damn thing but did not pay attention to any of the tooltips. So when I first entered the action district I had no idea what to do and was unable to kill anything. Each new mission I learned more and more about the game and by the time I was actually having fun, my 5 hours was up!! I went right back to the site and got myself 6 more beta keys. I played through all of them and am sitting here crazy from how much I enjoyed the game.
I want to buy it now but am still reluctant as to how much replayability this game will actually have in the long run. A couple other things are holding me back as of now too.
1)lack of hitboxes
2) I think this game should have more world interaction such as benches, vending machines, etc. As well as more buildings being accessible
3) Each action district only holds about 80 and was hoping for upwards of 200. It doesnt feel like an mmo but more like counterstrike to me.
4) This game needs bigger groups and a better chat system.
So my verdict is that I will probably buy it but am still unsure if I would pay a monthly fee for this game.
