Guild Wars...meh?

kmimmorpgkmimmorpg Member Posts: 624

I bought the preorder package a while back, so I've been looking forward to my first BWE.  I planned on taking advantage of this time, play the full weekend, to get a feel of the game and what it had to offer.

I played a little on Friday, it didn't suck me in like other games have in the past. You know that feeling of "Hey, this is a new game I want to figure out to do this or that!" That was sort of a let down, but I figured maybe I'm just tired so I logged and decided to give it another shot on Saturday. Well I still didn't get that feeling of "I really ,really want to play this game!" So after a few hours more, I logged out and didn't play anymore the rest of the weekend.

I haven't played enough to give it a fair assessment, but it seemed like EQ2-lite. I didn't get very far because I didn't feel compelled to. I ended up just feeling, well....meh.

i think it does kinda get like that only in the very beginning
because some of the quests are just kinda dumb but im going to say safely that after lvl 5 it gets really fun when exploring different areas and picking up cool weapons and bartering with others and grouping of course

plus the game really is only as good as who you play with. If you spend a bt of time meeting up with people or join a guild or something wiht peolple you like haging out with, the will before 10 times as good as it was

    i must agree with Talesin!!
Its sooo much more fun to play with ppl u know and like to talk with than just playing with ppl u dont know or playing alone.... But in all the sides i look at this game i love it! :D
Cant wait for next beta and to the release!!!
The only place u can buy this game in my country cost 80 dollars : but the hell with it i will buy it even if it cost 100 dollars this is such a Great game!!!

There are 2 facts i want to share with u:
    1) Doesnt matter how hard u try, u cant lick ur ellbow.
    2) 90% of the people who read it try to lick thier ellbows :P

I think I can keep playing the BWE until its released, so I may try it again - its not like it will cost me anything extra.

I don't like joining guilds right off, especially when I'm trying to get a feel of the game for myself.

BTW, thanks for the nice reponses!

I pre-ordered Guild Wars and have played all the Guild War weekend events.  I have the exact same feeling as you.  I usually end up not playing at all on Sunday.  I keep looking forward to the beta  event each month.  I always think I will give a little more time and I will like it better.  I just think Guild Wars isn't for me.  Currently playing CoH and WoW and like both so much more.  I was hoping to cancel one of them and play GW's.  I will give  it one more try next month but after playing all the weekend events I doubt it will make any difference.

i think joining a guild helps you learn though... you get to quest and ask guild members any type of question and they wont call you a dope...

well everyone is different i'd admit once i created a new character i felt the old ascalon was boring but then again im an addict to this and know what to expect i just mainly enjoy the pvp it is so fun the past 3 days i basically did nothing but tomb and gvg with my guild i have around 103 fame for my character (the one they didn't nerf as bad as they did my warrior/ele) got the sigil 4 times over in tombs (pretty nice selling it >:) ) i don't thing gw was anything like eq2... but your preference but it sounds like u haven't fun the higher end fun of pvpin. i played wow didn't find it tickling my fancy i rather found it boring once i got to lvl 34 i just can't grind without my mentality breaking to a 12yr stature but thats me not you. I may say i haven't explored everything wow has to other maybe you haven't explored all what gw has to offer you if you get past asacalon pre and new but maybe you have i can't say whether u have or not but me i found it more relieving than smoking (thats how addicted i have been almost went wihtout a shower o_O)

i wouldn't suggest joining a guild like most of these beggers want u in theirs. If u continue to play join a guild u like rather than a begging guild

With all due respect to the original poster - But you have NO idea about what your talking about if you say that this seems like an EQ2 light.

Unfortunate it seems like the story and missions will be very bad. This means that the presentation and world wont be worth much... <- This is why you dont get sucked it... I feel the same! I couldnt care less about the missions and quests because they are totally lame and stupid and boring.

But GW probably has the best, most balanced, most tactical and most teamwork required PvP ever made in an RPG.

Its al about the PvP baby.

If you want PvE then stick to the MMO grinds that are WoW and EQ!

GW is for the best PvP out there:-)

I also find the regular quests a bit boring, but not as boring as grinding for hours in a spawn site or dungeon area like in most MMOs. The quests help you lvl up while you also explore new grounds. Many of the quests (after ascalon is overthrown by the Charr) arent even necessary, theyre just there to help you lvl. I really enjoy the story missions because they require you to be in a group, and group play is guild wars' best aspect. Exploring the immense variety of lands for hours with your group while you lvl up and find awsome items until you reach the next outpost, then bargain with people for the awsome items you collected is addicting. I fell in love with the map and its land variety. But what I love most about this game is its balance. There arent any billionaire gamers, there arent immortal pvpers, and its very difficult to solo (unless youre with henchmen or a lvl20).

When I first began playing I too felt the game to be quite boring. But once i figured out i was supposed to join the academy to get out of the noob area (Old Ascalon) the game got SO much better. Exploring, trading, chatting, selling, grouping, pvping, i can keep babbling forever, but what I suggest to the original poster is that you join the academy and get out of the noob area (after youre done lvling) and start playing in the new world. Participate in the story quests, join groups, and try to get the best out of your gameplay. Because once youve done all you can its on to the best part PvP!

really this game isnt going to for those of you who enjoy countless quests and group PvE action.  This (and you know this) isnt a traditional mmorpg.  Its a game geared toward PvP similiar to say...planetside.  Im assuming down the road PvP will become more than just simple arenas but who knows..

so i guess my answer is give PvP a shot next BWE and see if thats more your style.  Get with a guild and hit the arenas.  I think you'll find that more enjoyable than soloing missions with a group of henchmen.  Personally I think they should get rid of henchmen all together.. but thats my opinion.  This game does lack the grip and immersion that most quest systems have in mmorpg and being with real players greatly bumps the fun meter up a few notches..

personally i really disliked the change to the start of the game, added what seemed to be more of a grind (i dont want to have to kill x mobs to get 5 thingamjigs to get a skill). Why they changed it I have no idea.

    ---sig---

PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...

kill 5 things to get a skill? hmmm i recall for the elements just stop the horde from charging the mage tower or the ranger missions charm a pet btu there was some things i dislike like get me 5 skale fins for a belt pouch.....

If you were to ask me i'd say this game rocks, when i first played the world preview, it grabbed my attention a bit so i got the preorder package. When i started playing in the old ascelon area, the game was a bit dry at first, but that part if more or less ment to pick your second proffesion and get to know hte game a bit before you move on, kinda like a tutorial. Once i got past the acadamy part i quckely got sucked in and found it better then any other mmo related game i've ever played, i've played the lineage 2 beta, tried out EQ2, saga of ryzom, and playd ffxi for a few months and out of those this kills them all !!! Thoguh i would like to see what WOW is like.

I would have to agree with those that say to try to get with a group.  I'm not saying rush out and join the fist guild you see asking for ne members, rather, find a group of people you can do some exploring and such with, and see everything that you can.  This gives a better perspective of the world.

The only downside to this is finding a group that you enjoy doing the missions and such with.  This can take a bit of time in itself, but once you find a good group, then you can add those character's names to your friends list and they will remain there so that you can contact themn again after you have taken a break from the game.

I have found individuals on ther ethat are completely intolerant of anyone else not being up to speed with them, or knowing every aspect of the game, but for the most part, I have found a lot of helpful and friendly people that will work with anyone and are willing to help out when needed.  These are the types of people that will make this game, in whatever aspect you play it, worth every second of being bored, and every cent you have had to pay for the game.

In case anyone reading this happens to be looking for someone to explore with or whatever in next BWE, I would be more than happy to help out all I can.  Just pm Kaylon Dantos in game and if I am on, I will do what I can to help out.  :)
