I showed a friend a screenshot of this game and...

My friends reply was "Oh, is that the new expansion for EVE?"

He was being honest.

The game's interface at times looks copied and pasted over.  The mechanics in many different areas are extremely similar.  Even character creation screams EVE Online.

I never thought I'd see the day where we'd have a true EVE Clone.

So you've played the game and its a EVE clone? Surely your not suggesting that since the UI is similar that its a clone, correct?

  • kadepsysonkadepsyson Member UncommonPosts: 1,919

    No.

That is not what I suggested.  The user interface is one of many reasons why the game seems to be ripping off EVE's current systems.

Beta-testers and leaked ingame-videos make it pretty clear, that it's allmost a 100% clone of EvE Online.

People do this all the time with other MMOs, why not with eve?

    Perpettuum doesn't have an NDA.

However, the user interface and gameplay reminds you a lot of Eve.  Point and click on ground to where you want to go.  Click the button to lock on to a target, wait for lock, then fire.  Keeping your eye on your ammo, and reload when necessary.  To all intents and purposes, it IS Eve's gameplay.  Not exactly a clone, but close.  However, Eve's interface seems more intuitive and polished though.

If you imagine taking Eve gameplay style and UI, and put it into a land based mech game, that's Perpetuum.

At the moment you can only pick up one assignment at a time (which is a pain in the ass given the amount of time it takes to get to your goal and back again) and the tutorials are pretty dire.  However, the devs HAVE said that they are working on those.  Don't expect flashy graphics either.

Combat is different, skill system is different, None of the FFA pvp area mechanics are in place yet and the safer islands are much more carebear (no can flipping/loot stealing).

The game has no insurance system to speak of so death is much more unforgiving.

I like perpetuum a lot but to call it an Eve clone is bull. sure is borrows some of Eves UI but as the beta progresses they've moved away from that more and more.

I agree, its NOT a clone, for the simple reason that its a land based mech game, as opposed to a space based game.  However, the similarities in the UI and gameplay are quite obvious when you start your character.  It's like comparing the majority of the gameplay mechanics and UI of WoW to EQ1.  They both play the same way.  Some people may like it, some won't.

Simply put, if you like the Eve style "point and click" gameplay consisting of random assignments, mining and pvp but you're looking for a mech game, with low res graphics then you'll love Perpettuum.

Its therefore no surprise that someone would think that its perhaps Dust 514, because you could actually imagine it being part of (attached to) the Eve Universe and contributing to it.

    Yeah its similar.

I hope when DUST 514 releases they will have MTACs.  I also hope that nobody claims that they are ripping off Perpetuum by doing so.

Also, isn't insurance planned for Perpetuum?

Finally, it isn't just the interface that feels copied over.  It's the regular systems you'd use in this mech game.  For instance, equipping your robot.  There's CPU and Reactor to watch to see if you can fit items, as well as they go into certain slots only.  Sound familiar?  For combat, there's optimal and falloff again, and there's your accumulator (capacitor) to store energy to run things like your armor repair module.

It's not just the interface, that's just the most obvious in your face example.

Yep i have to admit they look very similar to EvE-on.

Still this game appeals to me much more then EvE-on does, as you can use WASD to move!  Honest i dont know why, but EvE-on never managed to suck me in which perpetuum have managed.

If you say eve-on clone then please eve-on clone with new ideas :) as there are some which are interessting.

    EvE doors

See the best doors on EvE-on!

You can get more than one assignment. You need to train, parallel assignments or something. I know the skill has parallel in it.

Yeah I remember hearing that, but still, only being able to pick up 1 assignement from the start is a little bit annoying.  Maybe being able to take 2 assignments at the start would at least help.

     yeah. I hear you there.

But back to OP, I agree there are too many superficial similarities. I think making some changes for public relations purposes where it makes sense and based on beta feedback would be good. I can only imagine the threads derailing onto the EVE comparisons when this gets to open beta or launch. Will take away from other important information about the game.

Some similarities are just going to make sense given the game's context. And these things are certainly not things EVE invented.

-metals, recycling, factories, corporations v. leather, deconstruction (vanguard term), crafting tables, guilds.

    -CPU v. armor class req.

    -accumulator/capacitor v. mana

-thermal, chemical, seismic, kinetic dmg v. pyromancy, poison, earth, and projectile
