Sci-fi MMORPG, not Spaceship MMORTS

Electro057Electro057 Member UncommonPosts: 683

I've been playing Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Dead Space, and some other space games for the past month cause I've been bored, read the Mass Effect books, and then played some Freelancer......

Anyways with all this Sci-fi stuff I've been doing I started looking for a decent and new Sci-Fi MMO, cause I'm rather sick of orcs and elves and goblins......and I couldn't find a single one where I wasn't a space ship....and the ones that were good (EVE) where I may have accepted being a spaceship had no aliens....I mean whats space without aliens....it was like, four different human races...boring...

So in other words I am looking for something more...exotic...like Anarchy Online but newer, with better graphics. I don't really like playing a game as a human, since I'm a human in real life....could just run around like an idiot in real life instead, ya know what I mean?

TLDR:

Want Sci-fi MMO,

Don't want to be a space-ship,

Aliens would be nice,

Recent or decent graphics,

WASD, Mouse Movement, dislike click and move,

3d graphics,

Sand-box style preferably,

Pay 2 Play, F2P is alright but in my experience usually bad

Like Anarchy Online but prettier would be a good guide-line

    You and me both.

    Sadly, it doesn't exist.

From what I understand Blizzard will be going this route with their second major MMORPG following WoW. However, because they won't even announce anything until this year's Blizzcon you'd be in for a very long wait. Always SW:TOR coming out in Spring 2011, thought neither of these are on the same end of the spectrum as what you'd call "Sandbox" unfortunately.

An issue that you run into when considering modern or sci-fi games is population.  Fantasy games get around this, because generally speaking fantasy worlds have much smaller populations.  Look at the world's population today compared to a thousand years ago - two thousand years ago, etc.

AO handled this by taking place on a single planet out on the fringes.

CoH handled this by being a single city.

SWG somewhat handled this with low-pop worlds.

It is a tough sell on immersion for many things because of the sheer number of NPCs that would exist in the population doing nothing - but then adding in all the "heroes" - etc.

Heck, that is already an issue with many MMORPGs as somebody pointed out in another thread - as that Massively M grew, the Meaning decreased - too many heroes running around leaves you to wonder what the point is...

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Star Wars Galaxies is decent, although many forum goers here would argue that.

    Make it so...

Its funny how no one goes near the Sci-fi land based MMO niche much.  I suppose theres Ryzom, but its not the same.  Then there was Tabula Rasa, well, that was had as much depth as a teaspoon.  Thank you Richard Garriott for that one.  SWG moved the niche along a little bit.

Anarchy Online had some nice little tricks up its sleeve (the implants system, the random mission generators, the ellaborate backstory).  Sadly, more is expected in MMO's than what AO can provide these days.  It always puzzled me why Funcom went down the route of making a low-fantasy MMO game their updated Dreamworld engine, when they could have kept to their own IP and made AO2.  I know AO is getting a "face lift" but its not just the graphics that need updating.

Perhaps LA will allow Bioware to develop SWTOR into something with a new kind of depth to it.  I've nothing against the route Bioware is taking with SWTOR, after all its Star Wars.  But perhaps they'll be allowed to throw in something "different" to spice things up.  Let's take a crude example:  implants.  Sith are using them in KOTOR (Darth Malak) and 3000 years later Luke uses an artificial arm.  So, in theory that could be introduced into SWTOR.  However, its very unlikely, which is a shame.

You should really check out Perpetuum Online, it has most everything you mentioned minus the aliens :( It is in Closed Beta right now, supposedly on the verge of going Open. Because the interface looks so much like Eve, it is being discounted as a rip-off but there are numerous areas with the gameplay Avatar Creations has improved over Eve.

Bottomline is Sci-Fi is a niche and very few want to go for a niche. I hope eventually some will take notice and take it head-on. For now I'm looking toward Perpetuum to give me my Sci-Fi fix!

Edit: Nah, it looks good, for a spaceflight thinger, but I want sci-fi planetary exploration ect ect......

Hmmm, not sure where you saw spaceflight as there isn't any in Perpetuum. It is basically Mechs fighting for control of an alien world and its resources. The Mechs are controlled by WASD and it is an open sandbox game. What you are looking for doesn't exist unfortunately (I wish it did) , I was just pointing you to an alternative. Having been in the CB for several weeks now, the game is a blast!

    SWG, Fallen Earth.

Or wait for SWTOR, Warhammer 40k, Falllout(mmo), or F2P Clone Wars :)

Ohhhhh mechs, well I just saw a few comments how it looked just like EvE so I was like "ewwwww" now I'm interested again >.< I also saw the screenshots and it was like the docking UI in EvE so I was instantly turned-off

Sounds like you have to wait for TOR, nothing like what you describe exist, SWG is probably the closest right now.

Currently available you have two choices:

    - Star Wars Galaxies (actually pretty fun if you didn't play before the NGE)

    - Star Trek Online

Otherwise you must wait for SW:TOR. Personally I'm feeling the same as you, and I think I'll be returning back to SWG instead of STO.

Perpetuum is more or less EVE on the ground. Listening to your post, you would hate it.

This is a bit misleading. Many of the players I run into in-game site the ability to use WASD over point and click as a major point of frustration in Eve an consequently a huge plus for them in Perpetuum. It is very Eve like but they have addressed several points of frustrations on teh part of Eve players.

I'm prolly going to stay away from Super-Theme-Park SW:TOR......And I was a Champions Online supporter last summer, and that failed, and I lost interest in anything Craptic......I mean Cryptic....so I'll try SWG...although last time I tried it was in 2007 and it was a barren wasteland with no players

KoDC (Knights of Dream City) was one of the few mmos that I could find under this genre. It was fun for the time I played. Anarachy I played years ago.

I was looking into Earth Rise for a long time but not sure about that anymore as I haven't heard a lot for quite some time. Stargate was also a game I was looking into, also not a lot of recent info and it has been years in development now.

Perpetuum. Not out yet, but close to open-beta.

Aliens - yes - like transformers, sentient robots, you play as a human who is plugged in matrix style and controls robots Avatar style.

Decent 3d graphics - certainly many years beyond AO. Animations look great, needs a lil ground, plant texture love imo in some places, but the avatars look good.

WASD - yep. You CAN click to move, but no reason to. There is WASD, autorun, and mouse turning like a normal MMO.

I don't know what the payment model will be, but I'm assuming it will be a sub since you 'level' by the minute, on or offline. Kinda hard to think how you'd do F2P with that system.

"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga

If Earthrise would ever release, it would have all of these minus the aliens (how about mutants instead?). 3rd person shooter controls with excellent graphics. PvP sanbox play including territory control. And I've never played AO but I see lots of people say ER sounds like it will be a lot like AO.

Earthrise is a win for me. I checked out Stargate and it looks pretty darn good. Earthrise, Swtor and maybe Stargate are the best sci mmos coming out. As far as not being human, well I believe all give various options.

you know you'll better off imagining we already have the new gfx and just continue playing ao;p

Games previously played: AO, AoC, Aion, AoW, Eve, SWTor, WaR, STO, TSW, DCUO, FE, BP, ProjectEntropia, FootballSuperstars!

ah, i was gonna reply to this topic with "it's funny that no one mentioned Earthrise yet"

until i was in this 3rd page

anyway, yeah Earthrise sounds like everything you described

    Want Sci-fi MMO = check

    Don't want to be a space-ship = check

Aliens would be nice = nay

Recent or decent graphics = check ( judging by the Screenshots )

WASD, Mouse Movement, dislike click and move = check

    3d graphics = check

    Sand-box style preferably = check

Pay 2 Play, F2P is alright but in my experience usually bad = check

Like Anarchy Online but prettier would be a good guide-line = maybe

    ---------------

basically as what Harabeck said, it's everything you ask except it will be Mutant instead of aliens, anyway they both are almost the same ( at least for me )

i recommend you to check out the Forum of Earthrise and then read the QQOTW, that is how they win my heart for them

    So What Now?

Sounds like you're going to have to wait (like me) for Warhammer 40k to come out.  It meets all those requirements (well all the things we know about it).  It's a little too early to get hyped up on it yet though.
