DC Universe Online: Subscription Confirmed

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

In a recent story, Massively learned that DC Universe from Sony Online Entertainment would carry a standard subscription fee of $14.99 at a PC price of $49.99 and a PS3 price of $59.99.

No word as of yet on whether or not a dreaded supplemental cash shop will also be offered.

Well on the plus side at least I can stop following this one now :)

Decent looking game, neat ideas, but not something I would pay a main MMO price for. If it were more akin to APB's business model or F2P then heck yeah. But as a standard P2P I will pass.

I wish the game and the devs the best of luck though :)

Well, nice to see SOE keeping the sub model but you just know there will be supplemental RMT involved as well.

Can't see this going far with a subscription model.

And the supplemental RMT has certainly hurt Blizzards top title World of Warcraft now hasn't it, can someone remind me how much money they made from the celestial mount?

I must admit I think the game looks great but the subscription model doesn't seem to fit. its too much of an online action game and not enough of a MMORPG to warrant  a monthly fee. Has anyone seen any evidence of even character progression. From what I've seen you pick your 3 powers and those are your 3 powers. I haven't seen much in the way of a progression in them.

I do hope the game does well and I think with a Holiday release it will do but from what I have seen there isn't enough to make a subscription viable. I hope I'm wrong but it would take a lot more than currently appears on offer to make me want to purchase the game and pay monthly.

I'm really saddened they went this route. Look at how successful guild wars was with just the initial box price. If you have people pay for the client software AND have a cash shop on top of that, there's serious money there. Forcing people to pay a monthly sub is so passe.

wow theres only 3 powers thats gonna be added at all? lemme guess ones Tank ones DPS and one is Heals/support lol?

It sure has hurt CO, EQ2, and many other MMO's with p2p and item malls. But hey I guess you feel 1 example means it is the norm even though there are several that prove the opposite.

I would be lying if I didn't say I was disappointed that they are making this a subscription game.

The game looks great - combat wise - and I like the console support... but from what I've seen, this game doesn't warrant a subscription fee.  I just don't have enough information on it after all this time that would make me think that the content would have enough lasting appeal for 15 dollars a month.

I'd love to play it, and I'm considering it still,  but if they want 15 bucks a month, they're going to have to wait until the reviews show me this game is more than just a superhero combat game,  or the price for the box drops to 19.99.

youd think they would take a lesson from cryptic and STO lol

It's SOE, so I am expecting a Marketplace for a full RMT mode or "just" an item shop à la STO.

If they have nothing like that, then, cool, a potential MMO.

Hard to think about subscribing though, I am already paying an Aion and an EVE sub and can't even give the attention each of them deserves. This is the issue of the model, only offering a monthly subscription option rather than pre-paid models will make you need to choose between titles even when they are completely different games not directly competing with each other.

If we gotta pay a sub then the ps3 peeps better have a sub as well.

Could care less about the sub. I spend that much to see a matinee movie w/popcorn and a coke. It's made by Sony, therefor I will never touch it.

Champions Online is way better than DCUO will be, and CO is only $10 a month if you get the recurring 3-month subscription.

    1.  The Champions C store has been there for 8 months and they still have not released any gamrplay effecting items, and the only thing that cost over $10 is the complete character retcon, which is equivalent to a race / class change in other games.  It costs $12, and in all my time of playing I've never needed one as they hand out about 1 free retcon every month and a half with patches.    Go look at the C store, the trolls don't want you to see it, they just want to keep things ignorant and say "a store is a store."  Wrong, DDO's store makes me puke and I would never play it, CO's store doesn't effect me.

    2.  DCUO will launch with only two zones, both of them cities.   In addition to its two city zones, CO also has 4 wilderness zones. The zones are instanced and hold 100 people; the game world does not feel empty, it is the opposite of WAR, even with CO's relatively small population you see lots of other players.

    3.  DCUO's power selection is so restricted and simplified that you cannot even have fire and ice powers on the same character.   Even City of Heroes allowed for simple combinations like that, and Champions allows for much more complex and creative combinations.

Don't listen to the forum trolls that talk about STO, again they want to keep the discussion ignorant and avoid facts about CO.   I know most people like me who semi-waited for DCUO have given up by now, game looks utter crap, but if you still want a next-generation superhero MMO then come check out CO.

P.S.  Another ignorance-promoting tactic from the trolls will be to bring up ancient history about CO.   They might talk about Bill Roper, the launch day patch, or a troll favorite, the brief two week period where a content expansion was being slated as a Microtransaction.  Unlike Sony and such, Cryptic listened to the player response and decided to give away the content for free, that was in March, we just got another adventure pack for free last week, and the Executive Producer has stated explicitly that all future content will be free for all subscribers.   Trolls don't want you to know the facts, they want to bring up old half-truths to slander the game.   The core problems with CO have always been a lack of power balancing, and the accompanying swings of difficulty, as well as a lack of incentives for teaming with other players.   These are also the priority issues for the developers, and they have made a lot of progress in just the last three months, let alone since launch.   The bottom line is now is a good time to check out CO.

IMO after playing CO through and through, had potential - not anymore.

DCUO will most likely suffer the same fate, too early to tell.

Oo? CO isn't close to the level of DCUO. Better IP, Better Graphics, Less constraints (Meaning world physics and mechanics as well as being able to simply do more in general).

CO's value is even lower than that of DCUO and it's $14.99 a month with an item mall as well.

Sorry while I will be passing on DCUO it's still worlds better than CO lol. No sale.

And before you jump the gun, I played CO at both launch and recently came back to see all the improvements that those like you herald. The problem is... I found the game still sucked lol.

I wish I could be more specific but, I can't. I just have a blah unfun time in CO. I mean I have a ton of little issues, AI sucks, fighting against NPC's constantly for missions and etc. is just boring, missions/quests are simply boring and easy to complete, there still isn't much grouping and when it does happen it isn't for very long, Then there is the overly generic feel of the whole game, and the list of issues goes on and on and on. I mean sure they are I guess minor but there are so many it adds up and just kills any semblance of fun.

I mean with Super Jump, when you land you take dmg. With Super Speed, your travel is pretty limited because well you can't run up things even small things in the environment. Swinging is just horrible flawed. A trashcan can take you out of flight even if you have invulnerability? Acrobatics simply means run faster and jump higher. Back to swinging.... why is it super jump with some swinging?

But w/e lol thats just my opinion of CO, yours is obviously different lol.

WoW has more depth in game than anything I have heard about this one. F2P and cash for items maybe but not both. Not enough there yet.

    they just said they would.

You all are a bunch of cheap bastards.

You'll waste more than 15 dollars on dinner or a movie, various "important" cell phone charges, magazines and other useless s*** but you refuse to spend 15 dollars for access to a game.

Now a dev team that expects you to pay 15 a month + item shop = epic fail but my rant still stands.  Alot of you wouldn't pay the 15 bucks with no item mall.

  • jinxxed0jinxxed0 Member UncommonPosts: 841

Theres no word on an item mall. And this is a million times better than APB's BS hourly thing that idiots with zero sense of time are falling for. And whats the big deal about cash shops. Game devs know better. They know to only offer cosmetic stuff. Especially since its a super hero mmo. You all sound like 12 year olds with no jobs complaining about a standard subscription fee.

If your going to accuse others about sounding like they were 12 it would help if you didn't sound like a 12 year old whining that people don't seem interested in a game you like because they simply don't feel it's worth the money.

And there isn't a big deal about cash shops, some like them and some don't but most seem to agree that if your p2p there is no reasons to have a cash shop. If your f2p it's expected.

But SOE and Atari/Cryptic seem to have a competition going on seeing who can have the worst image in the MMO industry lol. Cryptic was winning for awhile but if DCUO has item mall on top of the 14.99 sub they will probably get back to neck and neck. You can disagree but you can't deny that both companies are criticized heavily for this business model by many lol. You may like it or simply don't mind but many don't like it and do mind.

But as I said, from what I know about the game and have seen I really don't see DCUO as worth $14.99 a month. Thats just my opinion of course the same as yours is simply your opinion.

You do realize that Blizzard can do whatever the hell they want and are impervious to being lumped in with the 'evil' devs and/or pubs? It's like a bullet bouncing off of Superman's chest

I have no issue with item shops as long as the game play dynamic isn't really changed.  I highly doubt there will be an item shop since none of the other SOE games really have them.
