Agreed 5 days isnt long enough on a mmorg to even see if you like it in anyway whatsoever.

But after playing UO for 4 years its definately time to move on.  I admit i was discusted at EA for scraping the UXO project which would have been really good.  This was a year or so ago and all they have done since is the samurai expansion pack.  EA are definately "flogging a dead horse" here.  UO still holds dear to me because it was the first online game i played and for so long but every dog has its day and UO is on its last legs :)

Since UO ive played many online games and there hasnt been one to touch it until WOW came along and for me its a UO beater :)

Oh and Avitu, wow and eq2 definately wont be gone by them :) wow had more pre-order sales then any other online game ever and already has shot up to third biggest online game at the moment with eq2 doing not so badly either :)  They will still be going strong when UO is just a bad memory (mind you its a bad memory already) :)

I think you are so wrong I've played Ultima Online for 6 years and Once you start to get those first couple of GM or Elder skills it's amazing. And I've never played WoW but I've heard it is a great game but as far as EQ2 I'd take UO over that game anyday, I've played it for a little while but It's just terrible. Ultima Online is probally one of the most succesfull MMORPG's out there because the choices in the game are endless it's a good game, but EA has just ran it into the ground somewhat :(

    The Graphics ar out-of-date!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sound bassicly, is HORRBILE! it truhly is. I dont see why many people play this game, while grpahics and the sound ar horrbile. they just ar. i would give a 2 1/2 for 'm both maybe a 3 1/2.
However the game-play is slightly better maybe hits the 4,5 because of the quests, professions.. but it still is hard, cuz same thing over and over. Like kill monster, kill another one, kill another, so on. to get some exp. That's frustrating? especially with these graphics, and sound.
this game just really is a booo booo, i mean cmon guys. Go play WoW, EQ2, those games r fantastic.Would it be justice for holy to conquer evil?

    1) You can't spell
    2) heh "same thing over and over again" you just described your lovely WoW and EQ2.
    3) please go fucking ahead and play evergrind and world of hypecraft, no one will miss you.

I'd like to be able to play online games with my RL friends and unfortunately, that's not going to happen in UO. It's happened in CoH and it'll probably happen in WoW but...

"the game looks crap, is buggy and imbalanced but it's got great depth" does not really interest newcomers. They go for the pixels; the content follows afterwards.

Even if I were to get some of my RL friends to play, it'll still take fkn ages before they can actually accompany me on a PK run since it takes ages to raise the skills "attended"; never mind the item farming that comes after that.

On the other hand tho; UO is probably the best game i've ever tried for those that are into Roleplaying - there's tons of skills, total character customization, housing customization and no levelling (biggest plus imo)

it's not the graphics that make a game (although it helps)

You probably joined the wrong server ;) most newcomers to
UO first hit the "production shards" like Pacific,Europe...
I play on an "advanced" server called "Siege Perilous"
it's a ffa pvp server, where you can't sell stuff to npcs,
and you can only have one character.
this harder ruleset forces people to work together
good and evil alike, so a geat community has grown over
the years. gaining experience is also based on a different
ruleset, once you reach 70% knowledge of a profession, a
different gaining system called "rate over time" kicks in.
this basically means you don't have to slay hundreds of
monsters to gain. you gain in certain time interval (5-20min).

If you wan't to give UO a second try, go to "Siege Perilous"
find some guy of the "NEW-guild" to get assistance of
veteran members. for more answers go to the boards on
    uo.stratics.com

Wrong.  He was right.. it was UO that was the first *SUCCESSFUL* MMORPG.  Meridian 59 was the first out, but it never made any money nor had that many subscribers.

All I can say is UO was the only online game werth playing when it came out. Back when there was one world and Pk`s were feared by most and only the brave blues would hunt them down. There are features in the game back then that was fun even for the blues that stayed in UO for one was thievs who could steal stuff right out of your back pack. Back when if you owned a house and kept it from the pk`s and thieves ment somthing before you could lock things down in your house. There was no secure containers in your house. There was no privet house the door was locked and when you wanted in your house you needed a key and you could be killed and the key looted or the key stole by a theif and then you had to get the key back or your house was looted.

See back then you joined guilds to be stronger back then there was no trammle for the newbies to hide. I know you think I was a Pk posting this thread but you wrong I was blue and The Guild I was in was blue but when we rolled thrugh a dungin all the PK`s ran only the most feared pk`s stayed and fought us and win or lose the endrenlin rush you got from knowing you culd lose every thing you had was grate.

All I can say is that UO is a hard game to quit when your freinds you made in the old days are still playing but for me I quit because face it all my freinds moved on and siting in a secure house collecting rairs to me is a wast of time and mony.

but for the ones that stay in UO I can see why They still have a strong Guild and enjoy changing the world by building a custem house or colecting rairs or selling pixels on ebay or what ever. But to really understand the game was to play it when it first came out. A world back then was a world of danger a world filled with players A world hard core players loved or feared. Back when the most feared pk`s name was mentioned in every town. Can you handle being the most feared PK` with a mill, gold for your head or more. You just can dream of being that good of a PK as a blue. You cant turn back time but you can live with the memery of fun and advetur you had in the old days of UO.

image All i got say is well said Redlegs,.Dam reading your post made me think of the glory days.

As to the main post, ya UO is not much to look at,Its been dead a long time,an to me there is no ultima online the game I love is gone, this new game the IMPOSTER is a vary washed up hurting game that used to be Ultima online. RedLegs explains the Glory days like he made the game.

SWG EQ2 an blaa bla WOW will never have the awsome feel of Fear UO had back in the day,

iv been around since Diablo 1 iv seen every type of Fear in a game,. every type of gank every type of player killer, crafting system skill system an yada yaya.New games right now are boring for a few main reason,.  no freedom. no pvp . no fear. no risk.BORING

I play EVE-online,. it has Fear.it has risk.it has pk.it has scammers.it has freedom.NO skill grinding.insaine market,.basic crafting low point. But i only play it cus it reminds me of the good ol glory days in UO,.I love fearing PLayer killers.I love hunting them.but I dont like sci fi all that much,.I want a god dam sword,.but theres nothing.so i play the only real MMORPG thats werth taking cash from me each month.

    think I lost track,.....ZZZzz *cough*

O ya UO ,.Ill still defend it for what it once was.not sure what you played,. but 5 days LOL well nuff said. i had to post,. Redlegs touched my old UO hart an lit a flame image i still feel bad for all the hardcores still trying relive the old days,. man guys give it up,you must be nutzimage

Im just saying, there's been a real technical impact where the graphics, mobs, everything and gameplay is modified and improved, bassicly: there ar now other game's, yes, better then UO!, now its the time for you to leave it behind and to move on.
Sometimes you just have to say goodbye to that old dos system :P

ok, i do confess, to believe UO was the best game out there, 7 years ago or w.e it was?, but its ridiculous to play it now. . . . even thought the first hour i played it shocked me terrible how lame it was, however i kept on trying for 5days if it would actuallly improve as i get that few more exp, but no no changes, that said enough to me, there ar maybe some good points with UO if you get in it deep but just not enough, the risk involved sounds great and more then that, but thats just that.

Yes, so UO's graphics are several years out of date... BUT amazingly it still holds many hard-core players in the shards? Why? because of the many many things you can do in the game... Graphics aren't everything, look at EQ2, I played my Fury to level 42 and then gave up because it was a constant grind of the same shit over and over...and because i have a semi low end computer I had to play it on low graphics anyways... NO FUN... UO on the other hand is alot of fun, not AS fun since EA took over, but yes it is still funner then almost any game on the market... Personally i prefer to beable to work up skills instead of levelling, because its more realistic imho...In UO you can be combinations of anything pretty much, and if you play your character right in Fel you can beat anybody, you just have to have skills to beat them, and know what your character can do good, and can't do good etc...

Uo is good and always was fun to play.

It is EA that is crap and out of date, have you heard about their new project they are working on?  Its called UXO 2, they are working on the website and it should be active within the next month or two, its uses combined graphics of UO2 and UXO coupled with a completely new engine which is costing thousands to make.

There plan is to release as much info about it as possible for the next 6 months on the website, and build up the tension and excitement for the up and coming beta test.  No doubt then that the beta test will be put back for a period of time before annoucing that they have decided to "Axe" the project and move all the devs to UO to spend a year doing nothing but bringing out another pointless non uo related expansion pack and charge $30 for it.  Then they plan to promote it until your sick of hearing about it before sitting back for another year doing absoloutely nothing apart from fleecing the poor players.

Tune in next year when they will have another project ready to get your hopes up in before repeating the above :)  Yah go EA go!

Bottom line is it is still the best game on the market.  I have tried WOW, COH, AC1, AC2, EQ1, EQ2 and AO.  I have been gone for a month, 2 months and even 6 months at one time.  But I always come back.

    I quote the website:
"Meridian 59 is an online 3D graphical RPG. It was originally released in 1996 by the 3DO company"
3DO doesnt make games, just complete crap

i play on australian servers because racism is acceptable there

Ohh - I just love flame wars... NOT!

To get all sides together: The people playing and (still) likeing UO are most likely old Ultima lovers. l myself love the Ultima Universe, which is why i tried playing it online some time ago. But I always had problems with the magic system in Ultima ::::21::
I also got turned off a bit by the "private houses" taking up more and more space making it feel too much like a real word - "sorry u r not one of us - don't tresspass".
For a modern kid who grew up with "modern" graphics this game will never appeal, no matter how much everyone here flames! And I understand, why have a $1000 machine (or more) and play with ancient graphics?

In the end - to each its own. I guess by now the Ultima community has matured so much, it doesn't need idiots that complain about graphics.... ::::31:: (or people that can't get into the magic system despite having played U2-U8 ::::39::)

Add the content in all four of those games and UO still has two-times more in it.  It's low graphics, it's low sound, but it's damn near impossible to get bored unless you just lose your lust for MMORPGS.

What greater tribute to free will than the power to question the highest of authority? What greater display of loyalty than blind faith? What greater gift than free will? What greater love than loyalty?

First off, graphics don't makje a game good. Second of all the fun part about UO is GMing your skills then PvPing with people. You're are too new to understand the real truth about UO. UO rocks.

these graphics are proboply even more lamer then the ones at uo. yet they fit with the game, uo ones doesnt!
