At this point, it seems like WoW is done for some people but not everyone. As for me, I'm getting a disturbing "unable to connect" error every time I try to log in, despite reports of players at least getting to the character select screen, and there are a few threads in tech support with people reporting the same issue. Blizzard tech support is all like, "Umm...did you download the patch?"
You'd think that all WoW's gameplay polish would make for smooth patch days and minimal downtime, but for as long as I can remember, Blizzard patch days have been awful. Servers down for hours coupled with after-patch issues such as the one I described above. I played EQ2 for two years, and I can remember only a handful of times where the servers came down for an entire day and even fewer times in which they were down during primetime hours. I guess that's the downside to having 40 something (made up number) servers and eleven million subscribers.

I havnt played WOW in a couple of years but remember the patch problems. I always figured on one day down and about a week to work the bugs out. Like you, I always figured it was do to the amount of servers.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

It's a rather standard patch aside from the REALID intergration, I doubt such a system will go smooth.
I hope that with REALID now in WOW that SC2 beta (phase 2) is just round the corner.. need my fix.
