One thing I noticed from the smuggler preview thread is that the character was a republic Twi'lek. Now, as we have seen hints in canon that they tend towards the dark side, this is cool. Seems that early hints are indicating that race selection will not tie you to a given faction. This could make for some very fun combinations, and the next step they should take, IMO, is to remove race/class restrictions as well. What do you guys think? Good or ill?

Some restrictions make sense. To be true to lore they don't want Chiss all over the place, so they restrict things so they are less common. That sounds fair to me. It is similar to not allowing people to be members of Yoda's race.
Having played EQ2, SWG and WoW amongst many other games, I really do prefer considerations of gameplay enjoyment to take precedence over considerations of lore adherence - except in those very few games that really are founded in lore, like LOTRO for example.
And Star Wars isn't really founded on Lore? There's a HUUUGE amount of lore on it. The amount dwarfs the lore for LOTRO (and I know LOTRO has a lot too).
Honestly, they are tossing players a bone here by finding a reason to include Chiss without making it Lorelol.
And unless you are really out there and don't care about Star Wars at all, I think you are with me in principle if not with me on this particular example.
Droid characters? I'm not opposed to that. Are you ok with Droid Jedi though? Outside of the Iron Knights (who aren't really droids), that's completely against lore and silly.
I'm sorry but for most, ordinary, normal people. Star Wars is the six films and maybe the cartoon series. No-one else gives a damn about whether Chewbacca's nephew was force-sensitive or not except obsessive fans.
I'm hoping wookies arn NOT a playable race. I played SWg on trial and Wookie was a playable race. I haven't got a damn clue but it really annoyed me seeing loads of em running around
The lore, or canon, is also closely monitored by Lucasfilm/Lucasarts, so yes people other than obsessive fans do care about this.
Lol, true obsessive fans are the ones that destroys star wars. Believe it.
I've always held the opinion that really popular IP's like Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, etc.(mainly the ones that started out as books or movies) were terrible choices for making into an mmo because of the canon/lore that they adhere to so closely. For example, LOTRO has no "high magic" because of the lack of mages/wizards from the books. I like playng mage-types in mmo's with "nuclear capability" (LOL) and this is the main reason why I don't like and play LOTRO.
I will probably still try TOR if it gets good previews/reviews because it is a Bioware game and I've really not been disappointed yet by their offerings...
Even the films are clear that droids can't be Jedi.
Virtually every single race in the canon has multiple examples of both light and dark side characters. There have been a couple of races that have focused specifically on exploiting the dark side of the force, but they're generally really rare oddball races.
Also, if it's a smuggler, it's not a force-sensitive character, so it wouldn't be either "light" or "dark" side as those only apply to force-sensitive characters. As far as Chiss go, I don't remember ANY force-sensitive Chiss characters, but I'm not up to date to any of the more recent canon that's been released in the past 5 years or so.
