TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea: Class and Race Dev Blog

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

Brian Knox, the Senior Producer over at Tera has posted a new dev blog for our reading enjoyment, talking about class and race combos.

I want to talk a bit about TERA's class and race combinations, something that's been a hot topic in our community and was recently discussed in Sam Kim's interview on Ten Ton Hammer and then again on TERACast. In the past we've said that we plan to have all classes available to all races, and this is certainly still our goal. However, like plans gone awry for a relaxing vacation, sometimes real life interferes with your ideal plans.

There are three forces at work here:

Game Balance. Above all, we want to ensure that TERA provides a balanced experience, something I discussed in my post about classes and hitboxes. What’s more balanced than allowing every race to play every class?

Race Differentiation. The flip side of the coin is what makes each race unique. Size, hitboxes, and animations provide some uniqueness, but so too does allowing each race its own individual set of classes it can play.

Aesthetics. We want to give players as many options as possible, but there are story and lore reasons why a certain race may not be appropriate for a particular class. This is partially based on our continuing development of TERA's rich narrative backstory, partially because some combinations simply don’t make sense, and partially because the actual combinations (such as weapons and armor for some races) are very technically challenging to pull off in a convincing way. If you’re going to look at a character for hundreds of hours, we don’t want you thinking how goofy that character looks holding a massive sword.

We’re trying to find a way to make sure the game is balanced, the races feel distinctly different, and everything remains aesthetically pleasing. That might mean that not every race will be able to select every class in the final version of the game, but then again, it might. The fact of the matter is, we just don’t know yet. We’ll keep everyone posted on how this shapes up, but for now we’ll have to stick with a firm "maybe," and we certainly appreciate everyone’s patience as we move closer to TERA's launch.

i think is a good  decision...maybe something like Lineage2 every race  should have at least 1 of each archetype but  not all classes i.e lancer and slayer  but not  lancer, slayer, warrior and berseker for each race

I tend to agree that some races shouldn't necessarily have all classes. I know little about the game's story, but from a design standpoint... While watching some of the videos, I saw a Popori as a Lancer and that just looked weird o.o A Popori as a Berserker is a stretch, but not impossible. But as a Lancer? Yeaah, I find that hard to believe.

I got to agree also, but its not all about the smaller races. Some of the larger races (Aman & Baraka) looks weird using a tiny weapon like disk & bows. They need to use larger weapons like Axe, Lance, Greatsword, staff.  Duel swords is a reach for them but doable I guess.

Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...

I prefer that every race can use every class ... hate to play a tiny ugly race just because I am addicted to mage classes -.-

i totally agree whit team-aZ.tho most of the players will look same way which isn't that good.i can give you a suggestion, don't want you to copy another game but for example take Lineage2. once you hit max lvl you can make sub class look same way but use different class skills.and some times help a lot when you get in the party that is missing class like tank or something you just switch and go xD.

you can see similar thing in Runes of Magic where your sub class actually give you a bonus skill for your main.i am just giving you examples, don't want you to copy other games but i think you may think of something ... tho it may be lil too late.i know it may sound strange but i would enjoy that once you hit the max lvl there is quest that can give you random sub class different then your own.

it will make it a lot more fun even in pvp people that enjoy play tanks can switch to dps class and have fun,not that tank isn't fun for pvp its just sometimes getting owned from ranged class kind a piss ppl off.

    P.S.

    Sorry for my English.

  • I think that every race should be able to play every class based on the taste of the players. This will make more diversity and less clones. Also if i like a certain class i find bad to play a certain race i don't like at all.

I'm for all classes all races like they stated since the beginning.

Popori lancer or berseker rocks! :)
