OK, here's a silly question... When you named your character, did you just bash the keyboard and took whichever words looked OK? Did you use a name generator? Do you use a name that you've used in past games? Do you prefer names that look like actual Names or names that are obviously just words?
Don't worry, this isn't for me, was just curious what people thought. Personally, I prefer name-type names, just for that extra nudge towards immersion. Saying that, I don't mind some names that are obviously a play on words but enough to raise a smile, just not outward things like Nubbz0r Pwnz0r or whatever.
(Apologies to Mr or Mrs Nubbz0r Pwnz0r if s/he exists)

I think this is applicable to any game, not just EVE. I tend to be thematic when naming my toons to try to keep a bit of immersion into the game. The only exception is in WoW where I do admit to having some odd or silly names for some of my alts, but not on my mains.

I use names that would fit the IP.
Only time my names are a little funky is if someone else has it and I have to change a number for a letter like My E for and 3, S for a 5 and o for a 0.
Shit like that.
But normally i try to fit the IP just incase i want to RP a bit.
Playing: Rift, LotRO

if you see the name fatboy/fatboy21007/fatboy21008 then guess what ya spotted me!. i never choose sum spiffy name i generally stick with the same name i used everywhere :-)
I just slap together random syllables. Do that a few times, write the names down, say them out loud a few times, decide which one is best.
The only downside is, that if you're good at disabling your mental filters for association games to draw something from your subconscious, you can often come up with names phonetically similar to names you've read/heard earlier.
I've always hated the kiddie leetspeek names. They remind you that you are in a game. I'd expect them in a FPS, RTS, or some crappy lil' console game. In MMORPGs, they have always bugged me.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

I have a set of "favorite" anime/manga character names i try 'till i find one that is not taken :P
I also have a set of "meh" names that i use when i'm forced to play a race/class that i don't like much (I.E. i hate elves, but i had to play one on WoW 'cause my friends were in the Alliance and i wanted to play a Druid)
Tried some names (dozen or so) then started bashing keyboard.

names dont matter, just dont pick anything starting with A or Z

Dont forget to tell the man why?
But in all honesty i have a character that starts with a low number, and ive found it damn fun over the years learning to stay alive / succeed ftw.
Yeah this topic can apply to any game, so even though i havent played EvE i can still input i guess.
Normally i choose the same name among many mmos, but the IP is usually the same theme so it can fit almost anywhere. Im also big on names that have a meaning through some sort of lore.
Normally i like to make female healers named niraneth....its a name that i have found is never used and it means "lady of mourning" (loose definition) or "tears un-numbered" (more exact definition). Eru is my name for males which means "the one" (silmarillion lore for those LotR fans)
I also agree with one of the above posters who have a bit of an issue with the "l33tkilla" or "QQDead" or one of the many variations of the word death and killer lol
I put alot of time into my characters so i like a thoughtful name to go with her/him. And those who like to put body parts in their name just need to grow up lol id rather see l33tkilla then Vajayjay or Pinga walking around lol
Glad we all mostly agree on the l33t kiddies names... Pwnz0rsaurz R3x...
Like others, I will always try to get a name that fits in with the setting, and will often peek around some name generators, just to see what's what. In WoW, I tended to use the same names across different servers, DAoC had such a grind I didn't play too many alts, Shadowbane was a bit tricky levelling more than one or two, but looking back, I do see the same names cropping up here and there.
I try to stay away from book/movie characters, and especially variations thereof. How many people that have played a fantasy MMO and seen the Legolas/Leggolas/Leegolass/Lagoles ad infinitum...
Probably comes from my proper RPing roots, dice, pencils, paper, face-to-face.
But, I shall figure a name today and crack on!
