Final Fantasy XIV: XBOX 360 Version Not in the Cards

MikeBMikeB Community ManagerAdministrator RarePosts: 6,555

Citing a "closed" XBOX Live system, Final Fantasy XIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka explained to Eurogamer.net during this year's E3 why Final Fantasy XIV will unfortunately not see a launch on the XBOX 360 platform:

image

"The main reason why we couldn't go with Xbox 360 was the Xbox Live system," he explained at E3. "[Live is] different to the normal internet environment, so when we wanted to introduce this game in the same environment as Windows PC it had to be PS3, so that was our choice.

"Microsoft has a different point of view: they want to have a closed environment for Xbox Live. We're still talking to... We couldn't come to an agreement on Xbox Live."

What exactly does that mean, that xbox has a closed environment?  I'm guessing that sony offered a nice bit of change for an exclusive (at least temporarily) console release.  I'm also guessing that we will in fact see an xbox version, just not until 6-12 months after the ps3 release.

Microsoft wants to run the servers.  Square said nu-uh we run them.  And so, no 360 version.

It means that, Xbox wants the game to not connect to other versions of the game.  PC/PS3 are going to be on the same servers for instance, and Xbox is against that.  Old news with them, they pulled this back with Phantasy Star Online back in the day, and honestly, I'm surprised they finally allowed FFXI to interact with the PC/PS2 community through the 360.

It would only be for those on Xbox live im sure what he is mean but "closed enviroment"

But the entire thing isn't much of a surprise

    Okay that makes sense.

That is a bit depressing though since it seems to indicate that there really won't ever be an xbox mmorpg.

So glad I never fell for the Xbox fad.  Microsoft can go take a flying leap.  Sony rocks!

sadly I just switched from my 60 GB PS3 to crapy x box from getting mad about the OS getting removed and not my new 360 elite just sits here not used.   Evey day im pissed at myself lack of good RPG lack of a good store lack of free online play.

I would gladly give my new 360 for a 60 gb ps3 even tho it's new with warranty and only 15 hours of use for owning it for 3  months.

350 to buy the appropraite PS3

    60 dollars per game

    Subscription fees

HD TV basically a requirement for the PS3 (thats a good 3-400 right there NOT including service)

I was gifted my 360. But honestly just when i think microsoft was finally breaking the MONOPOLY PS3 had on some of the best games they pull something this stupid. Its going to cost me about a thousand dollars to switch properly. So Yeah enjoy your laughing i suppose.  Sucks to be me.

It's funny to hear someone try and use the word monopoly in the same sentence as Microsoft when trying to paint MS as the victum.  Really?  MS has dominated more than it's fair share of fields, the fact they aren't dominating this one is kind of a moot point.

    END OF LINE_

PS3 is going to be the MMO console, when and if developers bring their games to the consoles. It's better all around for such things.

Hey we still haven't seen Blizzards next "completely different mmorpg". Maybe it is on the Xbox 360 utilizing the Natal/Kinetic

Could get a sweet gaming rig for that much. Unless you try to get an overpriced prefab one like from alienware.

Exclusives are a thing of the past, Microsoft needs to get over themselves trying to be so 'exclusive.' Unless a platform is willing to pay the difference, developers know full well now putting your game on as many systems as possible will yield the most money. Only an option for microsoft since they are willing to throw ridiculous amounts around for 'money hats'

also.. these guys flip flop like mad, first it was would be on xbox 360 on xbl, then would come out on xbox first to not on xbox.  lmao and his resonings, like xbl internet was diff than normal internet? or diff from ps3?  I read it twice and even in english it makes no sense.

Why not try being honest and say its a money issue and is difficult for us to talk about...

The only reason you could pull it off with FFXI is because it went around Xbox Live with Play Online.

Errrm you might wanna try not saying anything if you don't have a clue what you're talking about. They have said since it was announced that they were unsure if they would ever release on the 360, the only confirmed platforms have ever been PC and PS3. There were plenty of rumours around then regarding why the 360 version might not happen and most of us guessed correctly it seems.

Microsoft's online service is closed in that it only has access to limited online features AND it has an additional subscription fee. Both of these elements would make an MMO release on the 360 inferior to any other platform as they incur an extra subscription fee (on top of the game subscription) and cannot access SquareEnix's game servers. Square would be stupid to release XIV on 360 unless Microsoft got over themselves and made Live an open network without a required additional subscription fee.

Seriously, why does everyone think this is some lame excuse? What they're doing makes sense!

Who cares its going to be inferior on console compared to the PC version.

I wasn't planning on picking it up for my 360 or my ps3.

Some might remember Cryptic with Champions Online and Star Trek Online. They designed the games in such a way that they could both be played on the 360, went out of their way even to make it happen. Then due to something behind closed doors, after years of negotiation, they finally said 'screw it' and stopped trying to work with Microsoft.

Many developers have apparently had this problem. I don't know if it's the 360 or Microsoft themselves that make MMOing on their system such a hassle, but FFXIV is not the first MMO to flip them the bird and they won't be the last.

I think both the consoles and the PC are losing. I dont count the Wii as a console, thats more of a 10 year old's toy. 90% of everything thats coming out is a freaking FPS/military game. 100% of all the MMOs to come out have been complete crap. The only decent games overall are sequels (fallout, metal gear solid, etc). Its like the current developers have given up on making decent games and jsut make garbage for a quick buck.

So its not just 360 users getting screwed over or PS3 users or PC users, everyone loses. Everyone except for those who enjoy playing generic FPS/military games.
