Yes, I realize that this is only an issue in APB, but the possibility is there for any game that plans on integrating voice chat in their game. I'm used to ads in loading screens and billboards in-game, but over voice chat? Sure, most of us would just turn off voice chat and use a third party app like Ventrillo or Teamspeak, but I doubt that a game resorting to this kind of thing would let you turn off a feature that generates ad revenue.

Wait... How exactly do they manage to put ads in voice chat?
APB offers a build in voice chat. You are free to disable / enable this feature.
When enabled, you will hear a short ad whenever you enter a district, but not whilst playing already.
Everyones making a big deal about this but you would think people would be used to ads. This is not enough to ruin a game at all.I still go to the movies even though they have ads/previews,i still watch television and they have a ton of ads.Not a big deal just another reason to troll and cry.

Yeah, I've got to say that would be crossing a line for me.
I don't mind ads in cities (for modern games) and I don't mind a small ad at a start up screen. but when they start yelling ads at me then I lose patience.
TES Nexus, the site for Oblivion and Morrowind mods, has small movie like ads that you can't turn off. I end up having to mute my computer every time I go there.

Well.... I'd be far more concerned with other problems that come with in game voice chat which would lead most to simply continue using Vent or Teamspeak.
Excessive profanity, racist remarks, extremely annoying players, fairly raunchy conversations, etc.
For me the ads aren't a problem in APB considering it's a short ad that only plays once every 3 hours and only when you change districts. For $1 you can use the in game voice service ad free. Or you can simply turn off the in game VOIP service and not have to deal with it at all.
Thanks for clearing that up.
I was worried that I would start hearing an Old Spice commercial in the middle of trying to formulate a strategy with my teammates.
An ad in a present time mmo like APB would not be such a big deal. I can't say the same thing for a fantasy mmo though. A coca cola poster in Azeroth would be totally off.
I'll admit that I don't know alot about APB... but isn't this a P2P game? Seems kinda greedy for them to stack ads on top of the money you're already paying them. AND THEN charge you to get rid of the ads.
I realize that they made this as unobtrusive as possible, but it feels like a frog soup sort of thing to me. It's like they want to see if they can get away with this kind of thing at all before cranking it up a knotch periodically. Keep in mind that if it works in this game, it will be used in other games as well.
Ok .... first off before you break out the greed discussion.......
1) APB is cheaper than most other MMO's. You can pay $10 for 30 days unlimited play or $7 for a 20 hour block of time that only ticks away when your in the action district. The social district is free.
2) The VOIP service they offer in game is something that most MMO players have paid for as a separate service for a long time. Vent, Teamspeak, etc. Servers cost money, whether you are paying for them, you guild/clan or w/e, someone is paying for them. If you aren't paying for them they are supported by ads.
So instead of having to use and pay for a separate service you have the option of using the in game VOIP just have to hear an ad once every 3 hours only when you change zones. Or you can pay $1 and use it free of charge. Or you can disable it and use Vent or team speak like we've done for many years.
So..... I don't see the greed discussion being even remotely relevant.
Captial idea, old chum! The more the better!
Anything to make people STOP using voicechat!
No, I am dead serious. Voicechat is the bane of community.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Since APB is publiished by ElectronicArt$$$$$ I'm not surprised at all, greed at its best. Why didn't they announce this BS before the preorder started? Friend of mine been furious glad Amazon gave him the opportunity for cancelling his preorder.
a cheap instanced gangster game made for one purpose greed only. Cash shop + p2p (oh yeah its cheaper big deal it isn't a real MMO) + advertising...
Can't believe people some people are ok with ingame ads.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
I, personally hate voice chat in video games. Don't know why but it just irks me to no end. Is it really that hard to type?
EDIT: Inb4 "SkillSpamCntTyp" Yes you can.
