Setting up for disappointment.

I think some people do this, I know I have once..

A company announces an MMO and releases snippets of info, and you imagine what the MMO will be like. You know exactly what you want and that MMO is going to be exactly how you want it to be!! You ignore anyone who criticizes your game.

Now you are 100% set up and ready for disappointment. Because the only reasonable thing that can happen is that the game isn't exactly how you imagined it to be.

Anyone do or doing this?

    Yes, I'm doing this.

I am expecting SW: TOR to be a very boring title gamplay-wise.

But I don't think I will be disappointed on the other hand. xD

Ever see those Unamed Candidate versus the President polls? The Unamed guy always is ahead?
    .
Same as what you are talking about, imo. You know the President sucks, but you don't know nothing about the Unamed guy.
    .
Once the Unamed guy is named, you find out he sucks even worse than the President.
    .
Your all hyped about a new MMO, it comes out and you play it. It will never meet your high expectations.

    Nope.

I don't get hyped over any game that hasn't been released yet. I've been involved in the gaming world long enough to know not to ever think an upcoming game is going to be incredible and change everything, that doesn't happen. The next game will always be like the previous games but with a couple extra features/differences. It may be a little better or a little worse. I also NEVER pre-order a game EVER. I generally won't even buy an MMO, I wait until the free trial starts up.

I would say overall at this point I have a very realistic and accurate view of upcoming game titles. However I do constantly witness people having the issue you describe here on these forums. They get all excited like a little girl getting her first barbie on christmas everytime a new game is announced. They make 100 posts about how this game will change everything and be amazing, 1-2 weeks after release they are back complaining about how the game was made all wrong and should of been like this or that. I'm not sure why people can't control themselves pre-launch, and not get themselves worked up over something that isn't going to be what they want it to be.

A realistic outlook = more fun and satisfaction in the long run because you know exactly what to expect and you aren't constantly let down.

I did that for SWG and Auto Assault, and was terribly disappointed.  I refuse to get excited about any more upcoming MMO's.

I am hopeful about SWTOR though...

I agree with most things, but do buy many MMORPG's, though my last 2 games bought where Aion and Champions online, of which both didn't even get pass the free play time I got with them as they just turned out not what I wanted out of my own MMORPG experiance, but did buy them just so I can experiance them myself and make a judgement, of course I also try out trials when possible, but I also do not pre-order nor would I ever buy a life time sub, there are just far to many things that can either change in rl or game-wise.

    Fully agree

Again agree, unfortunaly as you already stated far to many people seem to have really unrealistic expectations, having high expectations is good, but again unfortunaly that's not what many have, as said many have unrealistic expectations and if the game doesn't life up to their expectations we can be sure to find many topics on how that game failed. Of course a game can fail to the expectations of some player, but in these forums if a person dislikes a game somehow that person feels that the whole game should be fail for each and every person.

It just seems like this is something that kids do. Not about the getting excited or looking forward to a game. That's a good thing.

but at some point we have to be adults and start using our adult minds that we've worked so hard to mature.

People need to start balancing themselves and stop blaming external sources.

Look, I was excited about the movie "Legion". Angels with guns? It's practially the play "marisol".

    But then I saw it.

I didn't get mad, I didn't start raving about hype and how my expectations got dashed on the rocks below. I just moved on. This happens, ad agencies and marketing departments are paid to get people to buy the product. So as mature consumers it's our responsibility to temper our unbridaled enthusiasm with our real world lessons.

getting excited is fine. But when people check common sense at the door that is where we have problems.

A lot of people do this.  Hell, I've been guilty of it at times.

    1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

    2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

    3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I was extreamly excited about UO when it first came out, spent the next 3 weaks playing the game at 15 min on 2 hours off as they worked out the bugs, finaly threw in thr towell, man was i pissed at the servers, devs, computers,IP's,

Next time i got excited about a game was SWG, will i ever learn?, hehe, no more excitement about a game for me.

Pre orderd DDO recieved my copy 6 days after release, another learning experience, no more preorder's for me.

Now its, game comes out, wait 2-3 days go down and pick up a copy  (unless bad reviews), wait for the next game that has promis, most of the time ill check em out in Closed Beta, or open beta, or wait for the trial.

The people who never read forums or corporate websites are the happiest, imo. Zero hype.
    .
You ask them about how buggy the game is, cause you heard it was buggy on a forum and these people tell you they have never encountered the bug. Or they say that it just makes the game more challenging to play a gimped class.

Wait, wait, wait. You actually thought the movie Legion was going to be good? :)
