Bored of every MMO after the first month. Help!

N64314N64314 Member Posts: 37

So currently looking for another MMORPG AGAIN to go play. I have played around a dozen MMOs and they are all fun... for the first month. I have a hard time playing any mmo longer than that because it seems to get so boring so fast. The only MMO I played longer than a month was DAOC back in the glory days.

I am looking for an MMO that can leep me interested longer than that. Any1 have any suggestions? It can be free to play or pay to play it doesnt matter.

Games i've played and liked: DAOC, EQ, EQ2, AoC, EvE, WoW, LotR, L2, RS

Can any1 help me out?

Why don't you check out Darkfall, it has a free trial atm.

Consider the possibility that you have outgrown the genre in it's current state. That was my realization some time ago.

You say you can only stay interested for a month. That is the lifespan of most non-mmo games. Try going back to console games, or check out an rpg that isn't mmo. Dragon Age for instance.

See if you are more satisfied by jumping from non-mmo to non-mmo than you are from mmo to mmo.

I'd suggest Mabinogi. It's a Free To Play.

While im not sure of the answer to your question i do feel there is a huge population of gamers that fall into this category or mmo players. I think this is what keeps game companies in buisness. Game jumping every month. Soe i think saw this first and did the buy a subscription to what ever its called and you can play any of the soe games. While this help[s the game jumper somewhat it also cost them more money.

I think games are being released so fast and without the content of say when UO released. or EQ or even Daoc or the orginal Lineage. These games all released with alot of content specialy UO. Todays games are pushed out the door to fast and then they expect the consumer to just hang on long enough for them to add enough content to keep them satisfied. It just doesn't work. So the game jumper is created.

    played M59,UO,lineage,EQ,Daoc,Entropia,SWG,Horizons,Lineage2.EQ2,Vangaurd,Irth online, DarkFall,Star Trek
and many others that did not make the cut or i just plain forgetting about.

  • and a lot of it has to do with the fact that everyone wants to solo in every mmo they play..sometimes it's th player that is making it hard on themselves.  of course, if the mmo has a bad community, then the player doesn't even want to mess with joining groups or guilds.  find a game with a great mature community, then group and guilding becomes easier, then the door is open for more difficult and fun content.  EvE lives off of this and is one of the reasons eveyone suggest finding a good corp..once you do the game opens up like nothing else.

The player has to take the first step.

I'll be damned if Im going to pay 15 a month just to solo..I'd rather go and buy Borderlands or Dragon Age if I'm going to do that.

Yea I agree with the above posters post about people mainly playing MMOs solo.

I tend to have a better time when I can hop on vent and play with guildies rather than when no one is on and I just play alone. Now I try not to play unless someone else is on to play with because playing solo gets boring and old.

I am in the same boat. Everyone says play "console" or "why play an MMO if you play solo". It isn't that easy a fix for us MMO jumpers if MMO's are what you started with and enjoy. My gameplay consists of gathering mats, crafting items, and selling things. When I am bored, I play the PVE of the game. I have been playing WoW for 4 years now and I still have the first toon I created at level 67.

I guess I was spoiled when I played SWG and had the freedom to harvest mats, set up factories, and craft for a large population of players. Now that I think about it, I am just waiting on another SWG type MMO.

  • yes but being a trader is different.  if you are gathering and crafting to sell..technically you are not soloing.  Your actions are solo yeah, but you are indirectly engaging other players in order to make the sell.  And that's fun sheet!  I agree.  The thrill of selling something rivals dropping a mob for some nice loot or bragging rights.  My post is more aimed towards these people and hop from mmo to mmo and solo grind/quest/whatever for about 30 levels and then wonder why they get bored so often.

I've played mmo's since UO's first year..along with console yes.  Truth be told I have a PS3 I absolutely love, with 3 games still wrapped that I have yet to open and play because mmo's call to me so much more.  But I try to make something out of them.  I still got level 80 toons on EQ1 and if I ever get on there...you can bet by hook or by crook I will try to group or I won't mess with it.  I'm not saying I ONLY group..but I have to in order to see harder content and more engaging storylines..which is fine with me.

I come from the old pen and paper d&d days...waaaay better when you got a few people involved...I tried soloing pnp d&d once, there is a ruleset in the back of the dungeon masters guide for it...and whenever I solo in a mmo, that is exactly what goes through my mind lol..boooooring.

     this is most likely it.

Demon Soul's is a great PS3 game. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is on a few systems and it's very immersive.

Neverwinter Nights 2 (PC) is what I'm playing right now and I'm not rushing through it. got both xpacs with it and it looks like it will keep me going for more than a month easily with how often I currently play.

sorry. you ask for MMO's and I give you single-players. but i have the same problem as you and these are the games I've really enjoyed aside from MMO hopping in the past few years.

Honestly the only MMO I've ever played for more than a month in a row is Global Agenda.

If you can't stay interested in an MMO for longer than a month try taking a break for awhile.  You don't have to play MMO's you know.

Thank you for all the input everyone. while I do like console games it hasn't been the same sense super NES and the old stuff. I guess I am just stuck in the 90s. Anyway the reason I like MMOs better than console games is the feeling of accomplishing something and being able to show it off. Not so much being a loot wh0re but showing that i've been places and done things. I really enjoy exploring and I think thats why I liked DAOC so much was because there were 3 totaly different lands that you could go to an experince. What I hate most is creating another toon and grinding through the same crap over and over again. Thats why I only have 1 max level in almost every game I have played.

O well i guess I will have to deal with MMO jumping. Thinking of going back to EQ(don't have a max level there)

Any1 know of some other games that I am talking about before I go back?

Well, one game that I missed the first time around and have toyed with the idea of tryng is Anarchy Online.  If not that, perhaps Asheron's Call which has a free trial.

I dont necessarily believe it is due to one specific reason but a combination of many reasons; More non-mmoers trying out MMOs, the P2P business model undergoing a significant albeit annoying overhaul (Think F2P), and generally the fact that MMO developers are trying to recreate WoW in some shape or form, thinking that the money they will make will also resembe such recreation. Of course, there are many other reasons, but these are the main ones. And who knows, I may be wrong. All I know is a lot of people are getting tired of MMOs fast.

Its a difficult time for all of us. Those that burn out faster than usual, and those trying to stick to their favorite MMO alike.

What we need is an MMO to end WoW, or the idea of WoW: the simplification of our beloved complex game genre. Ideally, this should be achieved by a new MMO that doesn't necessarily surpass the subscriber numbers of WoW, but one that significantly puts a dent in the WoW market. If this can be accomplished, we can move forward. Otherwise, the elephant in the room is WoW. If Blizzard's new MMO can squish WoW, so be it. As long as they don't use the mentality of oversimplification, and bring back the difficulty level to MMOs, we have a winner.

OP, you should leave games period for the next 2-3 months. Enjoy all that life has to offer. Then, and only then, will you be able to defeat your drug-like addiction to finding the perfect MMO. And who can blame you? The majority of us are standing in the same shoes.

i feel your pain tremendously. i was in the middle of writing a post which i will paste below, went to paste it, and you already did it for me. i want to keep this thread alive because it speaks to me loudly. i agree that perhaps i have exhausted what mmos can offer, yet if i had the skills/intelligence to match my desires, i know a game COULD be made to hold my interest. i feel like a lost soul, a nomad bumbling on from town to town.

my post before reading this thread below.

"im lost. ive played eq1, wow, eq2, vanguard, lotro 2 weeks, eve, saga of ryzom, horizons, perpetuum beta, darkfall trial, mortal online 2 weeks, age of conan 1 month at release.

i want a game with the sandbox of eve, the raid of wow, the no remorse when you die of eq1, the harvesting of saga of ryzom, crafting of vanguard/eq2, pvp of darkfall, graphics of conan.

can you whip that up for me?

desparately seeking a game to sink my time into, that is respectible in challenge, gameplay and fun. i hate to say that wow is the best that is listed in overall fun with raiding.

i search hopelessly down the list at mmorpg.com for something i may have missed, some gem that i underestimated. i think many do.

im sick at heart, yeah, can do rl things with my time, but in that case, so can we all. i want a uber game, something that can kick my ass, has reward for hard work, is interesting with great depth, a decent player base, interesting and diversified crafting. am i greedy to ask for all of this in one package?

im currently subbed to 2 wow accounts, 6 months of eve, 5 months of fallen earth,.. sigh, should i go to playstation?

please help me, yeah you can tear apart my little post, but ive spent many hours reading forums, looking at screenshots, youtube gameplay videos, and then,..... i go mow the grass. so beating a dead horse here, please help me."

so there you go. im sitting in my living room thinking of buying dragon age and elder scrolls lol, that was kinda good advice, maybe that is what i need. however, i would like to play in a world with other people, something more massive.

As players get used to MMOs, they begin to play differently.

When they pick up new MMOs it is no longer a "Let's go explore the world and find interesting things." Instead it becomes a "Let's find the fastest way to level and what the best weapons/armor/skills are so I can max this guy out." Players begin rushing through all the content and only doing the fastest way to level, as such the game become uninteresting quickly. They then blame the game and move on to the next one, even after 5-6 games in a row where they get bored within a month they still blame the games.

The key is to get your outlook on a new game back to what it was originally. The mindset of  "I'm going to go into this game, take my time, and have fun." Run around exploring, not worrying about leveling. See someone questing, stop and help out for a bit just for fun, just because you can in MMOs. Stop to enjoy the game and not worry about max templates and fastest route to max level. You will enjoy yourself a lot more, and spend a lot less money.

I've stopped playing MMOs until the new upcoming crop is released. I've been playing single player games, and enjoy them much more than the single player MMOs that are out. That is my suggestion.

Honestly, your best bet right now is FFXIV. Aside from the PvP.

It currently has the best mix of all of those things. You could say that combat in X game is better, or PvP in Y game is better, or raids in Z game is better.. but if you want depth and all of those things all at once, I suggest to check it out at least. Don't be fooled by the bad marketing-  all the money that 'should' go into marketing is going into making the game better instead.

If you want to know more than what is officially released on it, just ask. I know a fair bit more than what you could find out in a quick search.

i do agree with that. that is the aspect i tried to take with fallen earth. like many who play that game, i was a huge fan of fallout 1. i knew that i could max my level in 2 weeks if i went down the dark path to powerleveling. so i started to read each npc quest. i went to all the new player towns, and ,... killed chickens,... killed bandits,... more chickens, more bandits,.. okay questing is a grind, lets try the new bloodsports arena,.. 10 minutes queue,... no 30,.. no,... an hour long still never entered the arena. okay how about grouping,.. i can do that, fight something big,.. darn, nothing big to fight until maybe much later. well, take a break, back to chickens, bandits,..

maybe ill craft,.. skill 1,.. 15, okay maxed in a small amount of time. can i perhaps specialize in a facet of the crafting,.. no. ugh, now i have exhausted all the paths the game can take me already, in my mind. nothing left to the imagination, can do the million quests that fight the same monsters, craft the same items 100's of other players are crafting that no one needs, queue up for the pvp arena that never has enough members to let you in except in peak hours.

now,.. i dont mean to bash one game. this is my most recent example. i remember when i first started mmos, i did eq1. you had no idea how to craft, because there wasnt a template to show you. you had to walk around and talk to scrub npcs to find a real quest, because there wasnt a "!" above thier head. if you died, you lost exp, you lost your equipment. its those qualities im looking for, in a newer, bigger game with up to date graphics.

saga of ryzom, you can get materials from anywhere, but the locations YOU had to find, and you mapped them out. material locations changed with seasons, with night and day. if you werent good at harvesting, you could DIE. yes, getting mats can kill you in that game. that is so respectible, something you can sink your teeth into.

someone in this thread said, and not an exact quote, i want to obtain things and then show them off. i also like this. if i put days, weeks, years into something, i would like to stand out, not be the same as someone who has played a month. not that gear makes the player, but dang, games are all about goals and reward, and how to obtain it solo or with friends/other players. if you get everything quickly, why play on? if the npc tells you exactly what to do, or the crafting window shows you everything you need to make the same boring item,.. why do it?

i will look into that. i also spent a little bit of time, and probably not enough in the first final fantasy mmo. was a little ticked that japanese had been able to play it a year before me, and i couldnt speak with them because they have special keyboards that typed japanese. i couldnt communicate with them at the time even if i knew japanese. i do love final fantasy and still have the original nintendo cartridge of ff1 lol. that game could very well be what im looking for. thank you for your post.
