The problem with Rift is that it is a long long way from release and is being made by a startup backed by venture capital, I.e. It may get a lot of hype here, but never make it to release. I think XIV the best mmo at E3, but I think some won't get it at all, so are best just looking elsewhere.
RIFT isn't a start up at all really. Many of their designers are from EQ / EQ2 and other MMO studios. If you watch the gametrailers videos you'll see one of the *I think* producers has worked for SoE for years.
Yep, not in any way some small startup company and financing isn't an issue as Trion has raised over $100 million for Rift and their other games. They've got folks on their team from pretty much every US MMO.
Still, I'm more interested in TERA than RIFT...I honestly don't get the appeal of RIFT at all. It's the same game we've been playing for decades but with a bit of randomly generated content...yay? Am I missing something?
A bit of randomly generated content? The entire world will be dynamic and constantly changing and not in a predetermined manner. Please show me what MMO you have played that is like that because I would be in it immediately.

Don't take that the wrong way, I am just commenting that they are a very small new game development company. Problem with quoting ex-EQ in the development team is that it's been a long time since EQ ruled the roost, and remember Vanguard was ex-EQ development team too.
I also think some of the above need to bear in mind that XIV is not XI with a new graphics engine, the game story, combat system and a myriad of mother things are new...it is a new game.

I don't think you get it. Yes, Trion Worlds is a new company, but they aren't small. Trion Worlds has an impressive amount of money behind them, which ultimately means they can work on developing Rift for more than merely some small company. The point of individuals stating the fact that the developers at Trion Worlds working on Rift have worked on different games were to show that they aren't new to the MMO market.
FFXIV is still a Final Fantasy game and MMO designed for an eastern market meaning a grind fest. It isn't something that will appeal to every gamer, which not to mention E3 didn't really do much for it. Other than being able to be every class FFXIV doesn't give anything gamers won't be given in Rift. FFXIV is going to be a niche game mostly in the west. Rift if released as a fully finished polished product in my opinion will be successful, though I don't predict WoW like subscriptions, but none the less in my opinion the reason WoW never had any serious competition is that the MMO's that have come out recently are either partly finished or buggy.

I'm very much looking forward to RIFT for the dynamic content, but I think you may be a bit misguided if you think "THE WHOLE WORLD" will be dynamic. I'm certain there is static content as well. Kinda has to be these days.

No according to what we know the statement is more or less true that the whole game world will evolve on a server to server bases. A verity of random events can occur anywhere within the game world and greatly alter it. The devs did want to have a balance of static and dynamic content, so it seems one such aspect is that portions of the game world altered by some random events will in time return to normal, but some of the game world will in time alter and change for good based on these random events, player interaction, and dev updates without patches.
Final Fantasy is just a PvE game, so that isn't even in the realm of possibilities for me.
Tera looks just like an aim to fight version of Aion. I am not sold on the aim to shoot/fight game design method over the traditional click to target. In large fights, you lose a lot of situational awareness having to manually aim and fight over being able to click on individual targets. Not to mention Asian games are traditionally about grind and not depth and content. Look at Aion, that game was terrible. I also cannot stand the art design of these Asian games. Little 70 pound warrior girls wielding 20-foot long swords that appear to weight 300 pounds. Characters and MOBS that make giggling sounds.
Rift is my favorite of the bunch, but I think they could also screw this one up. MMORPG's should be about depth, tons of content and exploration, group difficulty. Not about over the top graphics and art styles, shallow mind-numbing 5-year old themepark gameplay and grinding.
I'll probably try them all out. However to note I like gameplay to be free-lock and not point-click or tab to auto lock. That style in mmos bore me eventually. So it should play like Hellgate, Borderlands, or Neocron 2.
On graphics, I think I like the western art style of Rift better than Tera and FF14. However, I might end up playing Tera as I read long ago in an interview w/ Blue Hole Studios that Tera would employ the user-controlled manual aiming (free-lock) ala Hellgate, Borderland, and Neocron 2.
As for FF14, I might try it, but I have a feeling from the preview I read in a previous Gameinformer magazine that I might not like it as they stated they wanted to make the gameplay and world design more friendlier ala Blizard's WoW.
Of those three, I am looking forward to Rift and FFXIV.
Tera lost me immediately with the skill based combat. There's a reason I play games that don't require a lot of manual dexterity and reflexes or skills of that nature. I don't have them. I am clumsy and slow. Why would I want to use my skill in a game about a character who is not me?
To be honest, I am not expecting much from Rift's dynamic content. I will be happy if it is a good, solid fantasy MMORPG. It looks pretty to me and I've liked what I've read of the lore. I will have to see more.
I wanted to like FFXI, so I am hoping FFXIV will be a fresh start on a similar-but-different game, hopefully with a more PC-friendly-out-of-the-box UI.

You can't look past that person. Give any clueless person a character in any game and combat will look like a snorefest.
Well its a pretty straight forward way to fighting mobs and he was doing it,he was using a couple attacks here and there to give u an idea..
combat looks super slow and borrrrrring
What MMO doesn't have a straightforward way to fight mobs? Consider that even in games with non-straightforward ways, a new person is going to take the straightforward route, especially if they seem particularly clueless. SE has talked about how positioning and other tactical considerations will be important. Why then would you consider a playtest where someone played it FOR THE FIRST TIME for a few minutes to be the end-all be-all example of how combat works?

Im not complaining that it took a straight forward approach,it was to be expected that it would be like any other mmo out there. All the more reason why that person playing and just about every other person playing in just about all the videos(ffxiv) on youtube that ive seen should atleast know the basics and shouldnt be fumbling around like a monkey is at the controls.
If "positioning and other tactical considerations will be important" I have yet to see it....in every video Ive seen.No other mmo seems to have this problem, you can watch footage and get a good idea of what the combat is like.
instead you get footage of characters running in circles or players having total delay of response to mobs attacking. The controls must either be really horrible or every person who has played it while being on camera has no clue how to play mmos..Will i change my mind if I see some ACTUAL game play? possibly, but as it stands now the game looks like a snooze fest IMO.
End all be all? probably not,Ill be having friends playing it,so I'll probably end up playing it myself.
For FFXIV,that combat demo video they have up on the homepage doesnt help it any thats for sure..

If anyone is actually paying attention to the leaked footage of FFXIV there combat system has been described as Pathetically Boring. I call that an epic fail.

It's possible I missed some info on the game, so I'll offer to retract my statements on RIFT if someone can show me an article talking about how the whole world will change. So far, all I've seen is the rift system - which from what I understand just creates a randomly spawned portal that generates a series of mobs, ending with a boss mob. Otherwise the rest of the world and game are "your standard mmorpg" as the devs themselves have described it. If you can show me something that talks about how the game world is dramatically changed by these random rifts, or that they do something other than spawn a few mobs, I've be very interested to read it.

I think it is so funny how whoever from MMORPG put that crappy combat video up when there are others that show the game in a bit of a better light. Yeah it is not the button masher like most want, but wow they chose to put up a video of a clueless player half assing the combat and everyone makes assumptions off that. I have seen at least a couple other combat vodeos that go much smoother than the one they put up.
Looks like those videos on your nifty link there are from alpha. Beta combat will be signifcantly faster than that even though it is still not up to par with what some think is adequate.

The rifts change the environment around them and if not closed can lead according to developers alter game world within its reach quite extensively and the mobs won't just remain there and wait for players to defeat them and close the rift, but move out and attack near by regions. After the rifts are closed the changes to the game world around it will slowly turn back to normal. According to a developer show casing the came a rather quickly closed rift's altered environment takes a few minutes to return to normal; we don't know if one open longer takes more time.
The game world in a more permanent sense will be alter through other random events along with developer alterations. Whats already been stated is alterations in instances and periodic alterations to terrain regions. To look this all up all you need to do is go to the official forums look in general discussion.

Lots of games in alpha or early beta have combat videos that aren't compelling or don't show all the features. Heck, most early videos are like that if only for the reason they show the experience at an extremely low level. FFXIV compounded that in the E3 demo by using someone who had NEVER played the game before and it uses an innovative combat system so it would take some getting used to (I see you assume all MMOs have similar combat systems and so if someone knows one they should do decently in all, but that's blatantly not the case).
I don't know where you are getting that you should be expecting a lot better given the state of the game and the fact they used someone who had no idea what they were doing. This is actually VERY common and has happened with many games. Wait until two or so months before release to get a good picture.
all the vids of FFXIV show peeps running around solo. The real magic dosen't start happening till you get a group of competent people together that use skillchains and magic bursts or whatever they will call it in XIV.
From all the vids I'v seen they are all crap. XIV is far better than what the demo's currently show.

Unless you've played it this statement sounds overly fanboyish. Of what I know in at least one video the individual playing the game was confused and thus a valid point to be hopeful and it could be polished some between now and release.
Of what I know in at least one video the individual playing the game was confused
Now we could argue if this is something to be concerned or rather be hopeful about.
What fun is a game if you can just jump in to play a high level character first time and know exactly what you're doing? That's definitely the case for most MMO's out there... but when playing it's more like "I've experienced this all before... oh wait yeah, I played WoW for 2 years!"
Learning curve nowadays is nonexistant. Being confused can be seen as a good thing, as long as the confusion doesn't come from poor game mechanics but rather from having to deal with new game mechanics that you're not familiar with.
Then again, people seem to want something new but when they actually have to learn to play they start whining.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
