I havent played the latest issue but I thought this was a fun game. I dont specifically like the fact that you likely have to group but that is the nature of mmos. Although, when u find a good mission group its alot of fun.
They made the game very very easy to level up in.Level 15 i estimate about 4 hours or so.The whole issue i had was if you couple this with 8 character slots pers server you get a lot of players starting new "alts".
There is no reason to be in a SG unlike other mmos that give say an XP bonus to all members.Or some other perk. Its so easy to find a "pickup" group that most SG's have a problem with keeping members active.
Word of advice:Want to enjoy a game?Dont be a leader.
Want to ENJOY an mmo?
Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.
Just play the damn game:)
I began playing the game in August of 2004. This is my first PC game ever, and I have only been a gamer for three years now. I am a 26 yr old female and it took my husband years to get me to play anything. I started on RPG's on a PS1. I fell in love with them. So fun. When I began COH I used to always be a follower in a group because I didn't want the responsabiltiy of leading. Another newb invited me to an SG in Oct and I was the first member recruited. For a long time it was just the two of us. I got into recruiting, made a bind key for it, and now we have over 30 active members and last Sat we had 22 people on line at the same time. We always team toghether and it has been so much fun. If anyone is looking for a good SG on Infinity we are always recruiting and the only requirement is be willing to get TP friend. There are a lot of groups that just don't make it because it takes a lot of effort to lead one to victory. We are sucessful but if leading isn't your forte you should NOT lead teams or SG's but there needs to be a place for all you followers so you don't get bored of the game. I recruit people a lot from small SG's that never play together. The trick is to not limit your SG to a couple of RL pals. Get out there and be social. COH is full of very friendly people. This is an awesome video game that I will be playing for a long time.

CoH is the best MMO out there IMO.
Issue 2 make it very hard on the casuals however(2 casuals friends left right away with this Issue, the others left eventually and they have a bad experience with accolades, all of my casual friends).
Issue 3 make it harder on soloers and take a EQ approach about grouping vs solo, instead of been inclusive, they even think of the right rewards for groups(Kheldians innate powers could be modified in accolades), but somehow, they just decide to screw their solo community. Making AVs that give accolade you need if you solo been unsoloable is a very bad move. Making monsters in zones where I solo been suddenly unsoloable is another bad move. Making AVs and monsters in story I pick solo, been also unsoloable is again a bad move.
Groups of more then 4 in CoH are tedious and usually far less efficient then smaller groups, but it is possible to make a group of 8.
The Hamidon is the only raid feature.
Graphics and action is great.
Sidekick (great to group casuals friends), huge variety of powers, graphics, character creation and costume, travel powers & train metro are some keys nice features.
Exemplar having no reward system and kicking peoples rather then keeping them low level after 4 hours of a TF is an awfull feature, lack of stuff to earn(gear, accolades, levels or whatever), enforcement of the little stuff you HAVE to earn(accolade) on everyone(could help in some zones only), group enforcing(althought minimal, it is there) are some nasty features.
Still, it is the best MMORPG I have been honored to play, to bad they listen to the wrong players and screw it badly with Issue 2 & 3(althought I looooove Issue 2 personnally, it screw the casuals, the accolades should not affect casuals designed zones in anyway).

Hrm, maybe I'll check out if there's a trial. If not, or if it requires a CC, I'll poke around for a private server to see what it's like. I'm one of the few who uses private servers like free trials. If I like the game, go buy it
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
Try reading my post more CAREFULLY. I use private servers as a free trial, since I don't like to put my CC all over the internet, thanks. Seeing as they don't have an OFFICIAL free trial, I'll try out a private server, and if I like it, I'll go BUY it and pay on a monthly basis LIKE I SAID. People need to learn how to read :P
Alternatives to "private" servers:
Buy the game, use a game card, play for 2 months. How many games do you own that you have not played after paying full price for em?
Go to a friends house who has the game and watch them. Convice your friend to buy it
Don't be paranoid that the people you are giving your CC to is some fly by night operations that will take your card and run. Many MMO out there are done through reputable companies and your credit card has a built in protection so that you are not liable past the first $50.00 for unauthorized transactions.
You may be the exception to the people who use those "private" servers. But you are in the minority. Just wait for another 14 day trial and hop on..but then again, for those 14 day trials, you're going to have to give up your CC info.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
I personally have had problems with NCSoft, which is why I don't wanna cough my CC up to them again unless I'm buying the game (L2 problems). Secondly, buying the game is $30, and a gamecard is another $30, which is $60 for 3 months of gaming...I don't even pay $50 for console games that I can play for over a year! I have some friends who are concidering playing the game as well, but they have the same feeling as me. We wanna try it before we plunk down the money for it. Personally, I'm extremely limited on my spendable cash each month, and if I'm going to use all of it on 1 game, I wanna be sure it's a game I can play for months, or even years. Not to mention I live in the middle of no where and I can't get game cards up here They really should give out 14 day buddy keys like Eve and WoW.
It is a good, wellmade solid game that really only suffer from some lack of real content. I think that City of Villains will be the turning point of this game, and it will find a lot of old and new costumers on its servers again.
Original and made with an eye for quality. I am looking forward to CoV, then I will give this game asecond chance.
"This is not a game to be tossed aside lightly.
It should be thrown with great force"
I personally think that CoH is a great and very well made mmorpg......only because you get to make the story for your character. Tons of Action, Awesome customization, Friendly community.
And once CoV comes into effect:
-villian characters.
-Underground and above ground base/HQ
-More customization
-PvP
-And I heard Crafting
-Personalized Revenge Missions
I mean CoV will add so much and make the game that much better in my eyes.
I mean alot of people say that this game is very repetitive, but tell me one think......how is any other mmorpg not?
WoW:
Kill named gnoll
kill named Dragon
Kill named Human
EQ:
Kill 10 rats
Collect whiskers
Collects bones
collect weapons
Planetside:
Kill
kill
kill
I mean they all have the repetitiveness in them, just got to learn how to pay attention to what you are playing and what you are being told to do. But I mean you are playing a hero game so of course they are gonn ask you to arrest this guy and this guy and this guy so I mean come on its not like super herooes have gnolls and dragons and rats,a nd spiders and all that to fight to go collect some thing.
The way the missionsa re set up for CoH, you look for clues, you cvollect evidents/artifacts, and you arrest people, I mean that is what super heroes do is it not?
Anyways, my opinion of this game is that it is a funa nd great game for people that are creative and very open minded and looking for a friendly community based mmorpg.

To keep it short and simple:
Pro:
Nice grafix, few lag
Great Char-Creation-System
Simple and easy to learn controls/system
Contra:
almost no depth
Leveling above 15/20 slows down a lot
VERY repetitive
No Crafting
No Economy
Nothing to make your char unique beyond the char-creation (No weapons, items and so on)
few players (german server 200 players approx.)
No PvP (yet)
Very nice in the beginning, lots of fun, getting boring rather quickly, if you play more then once or twice a week.
I find CoH to be a pretty good MMORPG (my second longest played aside from PS), but after awhile it turns bland if you play it alot, like 4hrs or more a day. At that point you feel like you're going through a stage on a platform game over and over again. Not only that, but I find it dissapointing that alot of people in the late 30s all the way up to 50 just wanted to grind wolves to level. Eventually I gave in to the trend because that was really the only thing to do most of the time to actually level.
The community was pretty good, lots of frendly people aside from some who like to be leechers and "can you help lvl since your 50 type people." Some of the guilds I encountered were pretty nice aswell and of course wanted me to join, but I was already taken. So found the community one of the best I've seen in my experience in MMO's.
Now I'm not currently with CoH or any other MMO atm because I feel that the majority of them out there do not equally balance out in many areas of gaming amd are not worth the monthly fee required to play.
Not more so than any other MMORPG. In fact I found it far less repeatative since the combat can be so varied.
So? Name me one MMORPG crafting system which isn't plagued by the fault you describe above. I can think of exactly 1. So I'd think you'd consider this a plus since there is no repeatative crafting to have to deal with.
Not that any other MMORPG has an economy to speak of.
This is a hoot. The character generation is the most expansive in the genre. Nothing else even comes close. As of I4 they push it even further. In the past year of playing do you know how many characters I've seen that look exactly like any of mine (any of the 2+ dozen I've come up with)? 0. None. At all. Ever. We're talking over 1000+ hours on all my toons and I have not seen any character exactly like mine. In that same timeframe know how many I've seen that look close to the basic look and idea I came up with? 1. One character had the same vague basic look as mine.
No weapons, no items to obtain? Shall I break out my Asheron's Call screenshots where the month the mattie coat was introduced everyone was running around in one? Even better I have one where, if my memory is not wrong, 11 people on the screen at the same time had the mattie coat and 9 of them had the superior helm. The same thing happened any time a new special, quest-only clothing item showed up. Within 2 weeks a good number of the server's population was "unique" in the same way.
Same thing happened in AO, SWG and Horizons. So not having special items to make your player "look unique" certainly hasn't harmed CoH one bit.
This isn't a con, it is a plus. PvP in MMORPGs simply does not work. Furthermore, time and again, the North American market has shown that it does not want PvP in its MMORPGs.
AC1, 7 servers, 1 PvP.
EQ, dozens of normal servers, 1 PvP.
AC2, 3 servers, 1 PvP.
CoH had one hell of a launch since it wasn't a traditional (fantasy) MMORPG, wasn't backed by a large company (SOE), didn't have an established franchise behind it (Star Wars) and was a companies first product ever. All of that with no PvP at all.
Shadowbane, which is nothing but PvP, has been skirting closure for its entire 2 years. It has never grown over a niche market and shows no signs of doing so ever.
Face it, 95%+ of all time players spend in MMORPGs is PvE. MMORPGs could cut costs, increase programmer time to their core playerbase, most likely pick up more players and lose virtually none if they just ignored the vocal minority which is costing them immensely for no loyalty.

Not just another pretty color.
Greyed I ahve to say.......this is a very good post and you make some AWESOME points bro......
I agree with everything you said....
Its funny how people depend on items and PvP so much.....I mean ion CoH I have never seen anyone have the same outfit or even close to the same outift as me.....so that right there i don't need super uber items to make em cool and unique.
And since there is no weapons to get it pretty makes 2 peopel of the same lvl equal so that no one is over or under powered.
Yeah wow...Sry CoH doesn't have copper and gold and bronze and steel and thorium....jsut shut up who cares....all you need is one type of coin and use it. I;m sry that the money is to simple for you too like that game.....maybeits a good thing you aren't playing this way I don't have to listen to you complain that you need more types of influence.
anmd the no crafting....do some research...CoV will be adding a type of crafting. and it is adding pvp as well.....and once issue 4 is released...we will ahev the arean where we can all pvp. so just shut up and quit complaining jsut wait.
