General: An Introduction to BSG Online

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

MMORPG.com's Mike Bitton visited the Bigpoint booth at E3 to get the first details of the upcoming Battlestar Gallactica browser-based MMO.

Bigpoint Games, a successful publisher of many casual free-to-play MMOs in Europe, was recently revealed as heading up a new MMO based on the Battlestar Galactica IP. We literally knew just about nothing else about the game until the reveal of the game's first trailer just before E3 , where we learned that we'd be able to play as either Humans or Cylons.

Needless to say we were intrigued to find out more about the game when E3 rolled around, and so I stopped by the Bigpoint booth on the E3 show floor to find out what the game was all about.

To start, Battlestar Galactica is not a full fledged traditional MMO that you might be expecting from such a significant IP. Instead, the game will be a fairly casual free-to-play browser-based MMO developed on the extremely versatile Unity engine that appears to be so popular with developers these days.

Quote from Mikes article with Bigpoint games. "I was told that in Europe, players are fairly accepting of this sort of thing, and they don't anticipate it to be a huge issue here in the US. I guess we'll have to find out when the game launches later this year."

Ummmmm can't some up what I feel about Bigpoint's opinion any better than this guy..........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrjwaqZfjIY

Willing to bet they will just take Dark Orbit, slap BSG skins on it and call it a day.  Just check out BigPoints current game selection and I'm sure most of you would agree.

The company recently accuired those folks who made Drakensang  Those guys there are supposed to programm this game now, which is kindof more promising than Dark Orbit.

Oh, god.  A full-fledged cash shop.  Scratch this off my list of ever wanting to play.  Nice way to ruin a valuable and beloved IP.

Yup gonna echo what was said before - WRONG!

Have to admit, while I like the series, I can't see how this IP can be built in to anything but a simple faction v faction game, with that in mind I'm not disappointed.

I only have very limited experience with the total designed that way F2p browser games (well 1 really Wild West Online: Gunfighter, tried Sword of the New World and quickly dumped it) so could you please explain what a 'full fledged cash shop actually means?

    - Does it mean nothing is avaliable in game and you have to buy everything via the store?  (example: new weapons for your viper; loot drops/credits don't mean anything - must go hard cash via the store) or

    - Loot drops/credits in game could buy new weapons or you could use hard cash to buy more credits so you can buy it in game?

WWO: Gunfighter works like the 2nd example.  You either earn the money (slowly) in game or can use $ to buy in game money.

Also concerning the browser comment.  WWO: Gunfighter is a browser based game and since it's not a MMORPG that seems to work OK.  I think as someone said above, it sounds like a log in, take mission, go kill cylons/vipers, RTB and log out type of game so I'm not seeing where a browser would be bad.  Could you explain why you don't like them?

    Thanks guys.

    SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter

While I do not favor a shop with game enchanting features. I do have to say that they are upfront about it and that is a plus to me. Will prolly try out the game. It never really bothers me if someone feel like he need to spend a lot of money on such a game. I never spend more then 15 euro a month on cash shops if I play such a game (With happens rarely)

Right, they don't think game changing items in the item shop will be a big deal in the west.  ROFL, I need to find these yokels and give them my brooklyn bridge spiel.

Nothing like being oblivious to the biggest issue facing f2p games these days.

You can put this game down as a genuine flop with no reservations.

I try to be optimistic, but I can't help thinking that this will be a worse rape than when Lucas introduced midichloreans and mannikin Skywalker.

I frakking *love* the new BSG, but damn... this doesn't seem like it will end well.

How to kill a very nice IP, First make arcade game out of it, and sell the right to a browser game company and you got a massive IP OWNAGE.....

Why is our world's game company so.... stupid..... Its like grabbing the best selling car, change paint add new doorlock and say to the world you got a brand new car serie......

I think BSG online would have done great about 3 yrs ago at the height of the show when every nerd in the cosmos was orgasming with each and every episode on air...but now...years later? after the fandom has somewhat died down...and its cylons against humans (2 factions only) i'm not really seeing a huge interest in this...i'm sure there will be some, i'm a huge BSG nut and have the series and LOVED it absolutely, would I play this?  meh..probably not....it just doesn't have that...i gotta have it feel to it to me..i think they missed the window on BSG...add in a F2P model probably...

    pass...

Bleh, F2P, pay to win. I had my hopes for this game till I read that

Don't accept this format. If players accept this, it will continue, and get worse. REFUSE!
