MMORPG.com's Bill Murphy got some recent hands-on time with End of Nations, the combination RTS / MMORPG coming from the folks at Trion.
When I attended the unveiling of End of Nations back in April, Petroglyph and Trion weren’t keen on letting us get behind the controls of the game quite yet. That changed this past week at E3 though, as I sat down at the keyboard for a guided tour of the one of the game’s many group instances at the Trion booth. End of Nations is an ambitious title to say the least. Promising to be the industry’s first true MMORTS/RPG hybrid, Petroglyph has a heavy load to carry through development and to release in 2011. Keep in mind that I am absolutely terrible at RTS games. So much so that I usually avoid the genre unless I’m using cheat codes in single-player mode. I’m that bad. And here I find myself after the show calling EoN one of my top surprises, and I can’t wait to see what else Petroglyph has up its sleeve.
The demo began with the War Room UI, basically your overview of the entire world (which is actually our world, go figure) and what’s going on throughout. The UI is still a work in progress, but it’s here that you’ll see a running ticker of what your friends, guild members, and enemies are up to in the world. It’s also where you’ll access your HQ (think housing with an RTS military theme) and keep an eye on who has control of what parts of the world. It’s like a blend of CNN and Facebook and even at an early stage it looks fantastic.

It looks and sounds amazing.
This sounds really promizing ...
People are crying for something unique so here you go and it actually looks pretty good. Oh wait, isn't this WoW with tanks ? Not playing now! lol
Looks awesome
Very unique indeed, just wished it was of a different genre (Battletech anyone?)
MMOs Played: I can no longer list them all in the 500 character limit.
lol DarthViktor - (Wow with tanks)
The game sounds like it might be fun, haven't payed it any attention till just this read.
Sounds interesting, but with all the new games coming on the market with massive hyperbole about good they will be. Think will take a wait and see approach. Looks like a interesting setup but how it will fare as a MMO remains to be seen. If they can pull off having hundreds if not thousands of players on the server then it might be worthwhile to give it a try.
Seems like a fun game..wish I didnt suck at rts though ..
still may have to try it.
quest kill 10,000 squirrels, reward +1 pellet gun!
Ack...another WoW clone.
Pass...
man, are most of you blind to think everything is a WoW clone? this is nothing like WoW at all. I mean seriously, it seems like you think any MMO that comes out now is a WoW clone...I mean it's pretty funny.
I think he was just being sarcastic like I was just to make a point . Anyway the game looks great and who knows, maybe I'll wind up enjoying this mmorts!
LoL man he was making a joke :P
Not so hot at RTS myself but this looks neat enough to give a shot.
I'm currently playing Global Agenda on-and-off and EoN's core gameplay seems strikingly similar to Global Agenda's AvA, except presented in an RTS format rather than 3PS.
Following on from a customer survey, I think Hi-Rez found that only 10% of GA's player base where engaged in AvA. Everyone else was doing missions and skirmish-type PvP matches. As a result, they've decided to push further in the true MMO direction as that aspect was a bit fail. I think the main reason for this was the reliance on Agencies, most of which where far too demanding of their members, especially for a game that seems aimed as casuals.
Not sure how exactly EoN will be implemented but I hope they acknowledge where GA went wrong with AvA and don't make the same mistakes.

So What Now?

I hope, Petroglyph can deliver. Game looks very interesting to me.
people no need to worry about the "MMO/RTS" hybrid!
in no way will it require the micro/macro that normal RTS games do.
this game sounds like shattered galaxy.
and yes i agree i wish it was a differnt genre because I would love a new game like this.
die.
Looks nice, but I probably won't be playing it.
Top 10 Most Misused Words in MMO's
I seem to think the reason only 10% of the player base played AvA was because AvA was never open for any particular group. A single map was only open a few hours a couple times a week. Its pretty hard to have any continuity with that large a lag between maps being open. In addition there were only 5 or 6 maps each only being open a couple times a week. If you did get an agency that had squares they were guarded by the agency leaders so unless you were "good" or on the "A" team it was still difficult to become involved in AvA.
I am hoping they actually address these issues in the the future patches sandstorm .2 and .3 but what they did for sandstorm .1 went way backwards on this issue.
In short I do not think this will be a problem with EoN if they game is made right ffrom the begining. The things I "worry" about is the meaninglessness of combat or "winning" a scenario instance whatever they call em. Yes I know thats probably not a word but it conveys what I mean . I really hate scenarios/instances in games similiar to this that can't be lost. So unless there is a time limit on the scenario described above it...the fact you can respawn an infinite amount of times untill you win kind of breaks the game for me. Sure there will probably be a winner and loser in the pvp matches but I want a game I have to "win" from top to bottom if that makes any sense. I do not want anything handed to me at all.
Sweet, I've been hoping for a good rts/mmo since 10six on heat.net. Damn that was a long time ago. God quake2 was fun. Anyways, rts/mmo, great idea, do it right you gaming fools.
WoW clone? What are you high?
It looks like any other sci-fi style single player RTS turned multiplayer where you bring your own army into the instance? Am I right or did I totally miss the outlining points of the synopsis for this game?
If I did then people need to write some shit we can follow easily and not just let us 'watch youtube' trailers and look at fucking 'screenshots' to draw our own conclusions..
"Yea, I've been drinking again.."
You and humor don't talk with each other much, do ya? The WoW clone was obviously a joke. A funny joke indeed.
