Too bad Cryptic is more interested in working on the C-Store, than on the overall game....
They brought the failure or non success (if you prefer) of STO down upon themselves....
Yeah, it is. Its also the reason many lifers are writing off the game and the money they invested.
They may be able to improve the game over time (like they have with CO), but once people have burned fingers it matters not. They are down the path with SOE, when it comes to reputation and credibility.
It's been debated ad nauseum over on the STO boards, does it really need to be repeated here? And just for the record, I opposed the move, but now that it's been done, meh, it doesn't really impact gameplay.
I'm still a lifer, still waiting for Open PvP sectors, Klingon content, interiors, real exploration, in short, a more authentic Star Trek experience. It's not there yet, but it does look like it's coming, some parts sooner rather than later. I do think they're trying, they just need a nudge in the right direction.
Why did they do it (release "exclusive" items on the C Store)? They did it for the same reason they've made most of the changes and additions since launch: because some players asked for it... I may not agree with what they've done about everythying (in fact, I have some pretty strong opinions posted on the STO boards about what I think they're doing wrong), but so far since launch, virtually everything they've done has been in response to STO players' requests. I have to give them credit for that.
The F.A.Q. was on the main page of their website before I pre-ordered and Lifetimed. But then again the C store does not add anything but cosmetics to the game, the races are about worthless honestly. It's not a big deal that others can get it now, they have to pay more then the people that pre-ordered. So someone wants a borg boff fine by me, I just wish the prices were not as overpriced as they are.
Cryptic did it to make money, plain and simple. That's what businesses do. I understand they've added a lot of what players have asked for, but they've added quite a bit more that benefits Cryptic financially than what benefits the players, particularly those wanting improved fleet play.
The update, particularly squad support, helped a bit with the issues that have absolutely killed fleet play, chiefly level-banding. It has allowed us to play more quests/story-line missions as teammates, which was very welcome. However, there are still major problems in fleet/team grouping and instancing that the update didn't address.
I just wish they'd listen to those of us who are in active fleets and suffering through ridiculous problems like party members being put into separate instances and being unable to get into the same instance, or level-banding overriding squad support when it should be the other way around. I don't understand why those things have not yet been fixed.
Cryptic, I want to play with my fleet and not get stuck in an instance that's completely different from my team-members. I joined a fleet because, shockingly, I want to play Star Trek Online WITH MY FRIENDS. I want to chat with them as we strategize on the best methods to take down the Crystalline Entity or kill the endlessly excessively respawning Romulans at The Big Dig. When there are 5 people on a team, and there are no instances available to take that many, how about programming the server to make a new instance for the team?
I want to join my fleet-mates in fleet missions. I don't want to be locked out of a fleet mission because of leechers/griefers taking up space and being useless while teammates have to wait for someone to drop out in order to join.
This is the only MMO I've played where fleet/organized group play was not a priority for the developers, and I find that very odd, to say the least.
I don´t care about what they put there but the lack of content and new element outside the C-Store is a shame.. it seems Cryptic will only oput new thinks in if they get extra monmey for
Awesome! I'll resub right now, then pay more for in game credits to use this new uber upgraded C Store and get some Fluff goodies! I bet 1 million others will all come back to STO for C Store upgrade to have fun spending more money! Cryptic all know how super hot and popular the C Store has made STO, it's the corner stone of the whole game! I could never play without it!
This game isn't worth playing even if it was free to play, which it soon will be. It'll just be Cryptic's final big screw you to the lifers that got taken for such a ride. They've screwed over everyone else that was following the game, so they might as well make it complete.
.. and mmorpg.com, shame on you for what you're doing too.
Am I the only person that remembers that the pre-order F.A.Q. stated they would add all pre-order items to the C-store at some point?
That isn't the point here, our point is that this game was a waste and Cryptic is a fail company. I will never play a game made by them again. They promised so much and brought such a shallow game. I want my money back, I feel bad for lifers. They have ruined Star Trek games forever, Bridge Commander was a much better game!
Well I can understand some people feeling this (relasing exclusive item for a cost to everyone) is a bad move however I do also remember a quite a few lifers/preorderers (including myself) were saying that we thought that our exclusive items would be awesome additions to the C-Store. Afterall the game been around long enough to the uniqueness of the various exclusives are rather dead now. Honestly I think Cryptic are doing a fairly decent job with this game espoecially compared to the two superhero games they are/were involved with, a lot of updates are still needed for this to be awesome, but seriously new batches of updates (seasons) are there for that very reason.

They did indeed make this announcement, after people had started preordering. However the Mirror, Mirror uniform was supposed to be a one time only deal when the offer was made, as another pointed out in an earlier post. The same goes for the Galaxy X; it was supposed to be only available to those who got five referrals 9or in most cases paid for five accounts themselves).
"Oh my, how horrible, someone is criticizing a MMO. Oh yeah, that is what a forum is about, looking at both sides. You rather have to be critical of anything in this genre as of late because the track record of these major studios has just been appalling." -Ozmodan

While it may have been there when you preordered, the rest isn't entirely true. The races have unique powers that actually do things in the game (whether or not they are good abilities is another issue entirely, and is a bit subjective anyway). The Galaxy X has powers that you can't get either (cloaking for the Federation apparently, and the cylindrical attack out to 8 Km). What happened to Cryptic's promise that there would be nothing in the store that effected the game that you couldn't get in game? Turns out it was like most of their other promises, pure b.s.

2nd world without all that vast open world stuff... Yea!!!
Yep, as has been said, most of this stuff was already made at launch as "exclusive" preorder stuff. I have mixed feelings about that. Good, because that means they aren't spending all their development time making stuff for the store, and bad because not much else has come out for the actual game. Content-wise, one STF in 4 months. Wow.
May this game die a horrible death so the IP can be redone in a proper way as a sandbox exploration type MMORPG rather than an instanced, space-ship shooter.
If its any indication, I just picked up the digital deluxe edition with preorder bonus codes on ebay for $4.99.
Downloaded.
Installed.
I'll post back when I either A: Get fed up and can't play anymore or B: when the sub runs out.
By what I have seen so far, expect an update post in about 3 days. I'm already feeling that "where the hell is the star trek part?!?!" feeling again.
Honestly. Cryptic should not ever be given a unique popular ip again. If i was a trekker I would have quit that sorry excuse for a shithole company long ago. No wonder their devs are leaving.

this game is dog shit, who the hell still plays it?
Pure, simple, straight to the facts of the case.
When are people going to realise that, Cryptic as stomped their feet all over the IP of Star Trek for all the money they can make from it?
As for the Dev's calming to be Trekkers, they've got to be joking!
Bashing CO and CoX is not going to help STO case.
Adding more stuff to the c-store still dont help the game. I am wondering how many folks still play it.
