I played PS at release for a long time, was one of my favorite games. I was actually one of the first VS CR 5's on our server. Anyway, I have some great memories of massive battles in this game and was considering coming back to play a little. Are there still enough players around for the large scale battles or is it just small groups running around capping bases?
Comments
It's pretty much one, MAYBE two battles per server now. Nothing like the old days.
I believe there is actually only one server left.
Good point.
Sadly, the game is a shadow of its former self.
It's been a couple months; but every time I play PS I get addicted for a time. I started PS after its heyday; think it was 2007 or something. After the recent server merge, it was cool; base caps were riddled with OS's; it was nuts. And fairly often continents would be pop locked.
Game seems like a blast still, and I have yet to see another game that provides that "big battle" feeling.
Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit
They only were pop locked because they made the planets over all maximum population lower.
PS is one of my all-time favorite mmo's... was thinking about checking it out myself, though I know it'll be nothing like its heyday..I miss running people over with my Lightning
They need to make a Planetside 2 already!
Oh how I miss tower Galaxy drops or max crashes through the back door of a base.
In it's day this game was really really awesome. Probably the most fun I've had in any of the mmo's I've played over the last 10 years.
Unfortunately in the gaming atmosphere of todays world it would take somebody with a lot of balls to make a PS:2 or anything of the like. Folks would want CoD:MW2 graphics and it would be damn difficult to do such a thing on the scale that was PlanetSide back in the day.
My friends and I still hope for the day somebody realizes the player base that is out there for a good solid game that would be an upgrade to PlanetSide.
I don't think they would require COD:MW2 graphics or anything...
The graphics weren't spectacular when they were released, and there were no hit boxes or anything like that that appealed to shooters. It still holds appeal despite issues like that. PS2 please!
Ahh so true, PlanetSide in its glory days were like none other, definatly one of if not the best times in gaming. You're also 100% correct, it would be incredibly tough for PlanetSide to return to the player strength it once had.
I have to agree 100% with you... I have never felt those adrenaline rushes with any other MMO. And PS had (or still have) features that todays MMOs lacks, like multiplayer manned vehicles or super massive battles, fast action PvP, no artificial toon combat skills but player real skill...

Speaking of populations, what are the peak hours?
The peak hours are pretty much the whole day since the chinese come on in the early morning to play. I found the pop to be surprisingly decent... You still get some good battles where you feel like theres a lot going on around you and its very exciting.
Hacking seems to be a major problem now. It can sometimes be very easy to tell people are hacking and little is being done about it. You can find hacks online relatively easy/fast, I was able to find and download one in only like 5 minutes and now that I have tried it (no I never used it regularly) I am noticing even more that other people who play hack. It is pretty sad. It also pulls to attention how poor the game was coded- Letting players shoot sniper rifle like an automatic weapon, teleport anywhere instantly on the map, see cloaked units, have perfect cone of fire even when jumping around firing for or long periods at a time, using afterburners limitlessly, etc.

I agree, everytime I watch a PS video or think back, man that game was exciting. So many intense moments. The crazy rush to get an ANT to the warpgate and back before the base runs out of power all the while reavers chasing you through the trees.
Game was like no other.
*tears up*.
Actually I resubscribed yesterday. The pop is actually pretty decent. I'm on VS and we have the lowest population, I've been in some nice raids, probably about 50-80 person raids, there's only two battles going on at any time, but I find that pretty nice. I haven't been bored yet.
Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2
Good to hear that Planetside 2 will be released, the pop is really low currently. Besides that Battleground Europe: ww2online went f2p which has a similar concept without any ingame shop. I wished Planetside 2 would offer to concquer a whole map and not just bases and zones. Anyway, since this year some kind of Planetside clone went f2p aswell called Mars War..but an ingame shop is what drives me away a bit.
Lets see how Planetside 2 will look like...
Just resubbed for the heck of it, I'm not surprised that there's only 1 server now when there was 6 or 7 at launch which eventually dropped to 3 (Werner, Emerald, Markov)- I'm a Johari refugee. From what I've heard during "peak" hours hot spots (or instant action) has plenty of action, so I'm going to give it a try tonight, I need to hit the shooting range to polish get used to it again as I haven't played since 2004.
Graphics looks severely dated and at 1920x1080 I see alot of jagged edges on textures and I get 400 fps via alt+p performance monitor, I can't wait to see what PS2 will look like with updated graphics.
Battleground europe is not free to play where did you get that from....
