Would this game be the MMORPG for me?

TwilighAegisTwilighAegis Member Posts: 41

Ok, im looking at this and a coupple other games. im an EKS, with E at 76%.
Heres my earlier post stating my preferences:

This has been a long-running search for me: I first encountered MMORPGs in Runescape, which of couse I realized is crap. At the house of one of my friends, I played CoH. CoH has the most fun battle system of any game I've played yet. Then, i bought horizions, which i really didn't like. After that, I tried Anarchy Online, but that wasn't too great, although the best thing i'd had yet. Time passed with nothing happening regarding this subject, until a thing happened. My friend, yes the same one, bought World of Warcraft. That game just rocked, it had a battle system that was almost as engaging and interactive as that of CoH, but without the price of no other content. Of course, it is class based, which i don't like, and it is fantasy-medival, another thing I don't like, but the fun factor outweighs it. I've also been seriously looking at the Matrix Online, but that has gotten some definite bad reviews.
Some things to base suggestions on:

- I like having battles be dynamic, so they require thought and strategy. No just click-and-walk-away type battles here, those are sooo boring and not even interactive.

- I like Sci-Fi or Post Apochalyptical, but will go with Fantasy if it is good. This is a reletively minor point, as compared to my opinions on battle systems, classes, and grinding.

- I like it when the world/storyline can be altered by players or groups of players (a big reason im considdering MxO (on a mostly unrelated note: Morpheous smilie ::::::::09:::::: ))

- Class-based systems are bad (except when the don't lock you in. The AO one doesn't lock you in.)

- I like the option of soloing or grouping

- grinding is a satanspawn.

- big faction vs faction battles are cool ::::::::19::::::

- i can invest 2 hrs or less per day. No everquest for me.

- I'm 14 years old and can only afford up to 20$ per month, 15$ or less would be preferable.

- I have dialup internet, but a decent computer (500$ Dell Dimension Desktop). Soon i'm gettin satelite though ::::::::17::::::

Ok people, give me some ideas. Please. I wan't MXO to be cool, but i know WoW already is; however there are other games out there I haven't investigated

And this one:

Just to make everything absolutley clear, I'm in this for fun. Granted, EVE or SWG may be fun, but some reviews say otherwise. Personally, I don't care about levels. I do kinda like achievement when it impacts the world - i.e. Player Built Cities, Clans, Storyline Impact - but my charicter's power/inventory getting better gives me very little to no satisfaction or enjoyment. However, in the case of SWG it was a staff review (which get outdated), and the thing that indicated unfun grinding in the case of EVE was people kept saying it required patience - which could just mean slow lvling times instead of boring, repetitive battles.

p.s. im not really into crafting

So i'm looking at this game. Please tell me if its right for me.
Im also looking at The Matrix Online and World of Warcraft.

"- I like having battles be dynamic, so they require thought and strategy. No just click-and-walk-away type battles here, those are sooo boring and not even interactive."

If you die in eve, you lose your ship. No walking away from battles here. Battles are very exciting and important, and later on in the game there is a LOT of stuff you need to be thinking about when figthing. 10/10 here eve has an amazing battle system.

"- I like it when the world/storyline can be altered by players or groups of players (a big reason im considdering MxO (on a mostly unrelated note: Morpheous smilie ::::::::::09:::::::: ))"

Ok, you might as well go and buy eve now because this is one of the best parts about eve, you can and will affect the game world. In my 14 days of trying the game out I heard many tales of famous corps and their jumpgate blockades (m0o corp) 10/10 here.

"- Class-based systems are bad (except when the don't lock you in. The AO one doesn't lock you in.)"

Sorry, huh? And eve is not class based at all. and don't let the starting preset templates fool you.

"- I like the option of soloing or grouping"

You can get lots done both ways. But Eve is all about corporations (guilds) and group play.

    "- grinding is a satanspawn."

No experience grind here. And the skill advancement is done offline, so you don't need to grind at all to progress. Most of the gameplay is making ISK (money)

"- big faction vs faction battles are cool ::::::::::19::::::::"

Ha, you haven't seen a true guild war until you've played eve.

"- i can invest 2 hrs or less per day. No everquest for me."

    Yup

"- I'm 14 years old and can only afford up to 20$ per month, 15$ or less would be preferable."

    You're ok here.

"- I have dialup internet, but a decent computer (500$ Dell Dimension Desktop). Soon i'm gettin satelite though ::::::::::17::::::::"

    You'll be fine.

Now heres the one problem, it isn't all that much fun. I've tried the game out 3 or so times now and each time i'm impressed, but I can never find the fun. I've joined a corp, but all we did was sit around and mine and chat, any game can offer this. All of the things that actually sounded fun would take forever to get to. So heres the bottom line, you'll have to be willing to give the game a fair chance. And by a fair chance I mean a month or so of mediocre gameplay. I didn't have the dedication to do this but who knows, maybe you do.

Hope this helps. And remember i've only done the trial.

I had to comment on this last point. There is a lot of fun doing whatever you want to be found, the "problem" is that you have to know what you want and go to it.

If you are looking for a RP corp, you have to find a RP corp that is active in moving and shaking up what is going on in EVE. Jericho Fraction and PIE do this in a HUGE way. Then there are corps that are PvP to the gills. You can get into fights from day one in a frigate if you want, and it is a good time. If you like to mine, build things, explore, whatever, there is a corp, or no corp if you are a lone ranger type. There are literally thousands of corps with all kinds of things going on.

Here's the one thing I have learned...if you don't like the corp you are in, LEAVE IT. If you are bored as part of a corp...FIND A DIFFERENT ONE. You'll find a place to call home. Don't "settle" and let people know exactly what type of game play you are looking for, even if it means they "can't help you" with their corp. You'll be much happier in the long run.

    Cheers!

All the characteristics you described are pretty much the basis for the world of EVE. There is currently a war in the game involving over 7000 people. So ... all these MMO's that "claim" to have large battles can choke on the dirt trail left behind EVE. As far as effecting the game, 1 pilot can change the tides of a fight and a war is won, 1 fight at a time. Lots of people like to say that you can't influence much in a fight until you have millions upon millions of skill points, but that's total BS. I'm in a corps that has people anywhere from 3M to 25M SP's (skill points per character) and everyone gets involved in the fights and can be equally effective. You just gotta learn what ship types/setups to use.

The issue involving how "fun" EVE is, is very subjective. If you start off playing the game by mining, then yes, your going to find it very VERY boring. You can't really jump into pvp RIGHT away, since you must understand, there is always the risk of losing a ship and you have to pay to replace when that happens. There is insurance in the game that replaces the cost of the ship but, there is also other costs involved like, mudules (ship equipment) and re-insuring the new ship incase you lose it too. When I started about 5 months ago, I did a little of everything (which I heavily suggest in the 2 week trial). You can run some missions for agents (makes good ISK), do a little mining (makes better ISK) and then try exploring around different systems and regions of space or try flying complexes (complexes are "not" dungeons ... lmao). If you really try different things, I'm sure you'll find at least a few things that you will enjoy, and once you take a bite, the lure sinks in. The more you play this game, the better the experience gets.

My corporation is part of the pvp-wing of the largest in-game alliance (2nd being the "we hate Xetic Alliance, Alliance") and are always involved in fights. We recently even took down a Player Owned Station which was something new and exciting, never blew an entire station before ::::40::

But try it out and figure. after the two weeks, you'll just keep evolving with the game.

I find EVE to be a more intellectual game than action based game. It's not a massive click-fest to participate in this game, but rather you spend your time planning out your next moves.

Plusses: There are tons of ways to play this game. You can be a miner, fighter, industrialist, trader, pirate, pirate hunter, etc.

Real-time skill advancement - lots of people don't like this, but if you're limited in play time, this would probably be a plus for you. You set up a skill to be trained, and it trains in real time - when you aren't logged into the system as well as when you are. This kind of stinks at first when you play it a bit more and really want the next big ship, etc, but is nice when the skills take longer to learn. I can set a skill to start learning when I quit playing, and the next night when I log in, it will be done, or close to done.

There is a large variety of equipment - some equipment is very specialized, useful in certain settings, but this equipment can help turn the tide of battle

Huge areas to explore - this could possibly have the largest "map" of any game out there. It varies from completely safe areas to completely lawless.

Player controlled economy - lots of ways to make a buck!

Strategic combat - you need to think about what you're going to do, the best weapons to use, the best ammo to use, etc. Also have to keep an escape route open!!

Negatives: Map is huge - you're going to spend a lot of time travelling, most likely.

Slow to get into - It takes a lot of money to buy the skills and ships that are necessary. There is no way you can ever catch the people that have been in there from the beginning, as they have millions of skill points, and you start with a few thousand. Since training is in real time, the only way you can catch them is if they quit.

EVE is a very different playing experience than any other MMO I've played. There's not as much of a hard story line as a game like WoW would have. There's no huge quest system with instanced dungeons to keep you occupied. Basically, you aren't spoon fed. You need to set your own goals, determine what you want to do, and go out there and do it. You aren't going to be told what to do. If this sort of free-form environment appeals to you, try EVE. If not, you might be disappointed.

In either case, there's  a 14 day free trial that doesn't even require a credit card. Try it! You might like it. You don't have much to lose if you don't.

Sounds good, im downloading the trial now. Hopefully it's as strategic as it sounds. The whole mining thing kinda puts me off, but I have nothing to lose by DLing the trial. WoW was fun, but is severly lacking in the strategy part, not to mention computer controlled enemy difficulty ::::31:: . If I likie this game a lot, my search is over. If not, i'll be waiting for a free trial of the matrix online. If that, even that fails, well then, WoW is still fun. However EVE online is really looking like the one, i'm optimistic about it ::::28:: .

oh and p.s. - sole: my internet is pay per month, not pay per hour, just like that of an MMORPG. :)

I played EVE for about four months. It was a good game with pleasing artwork - sometimes so beautiful it takes your breath away - and a complex, mulitple layer game play, that requires an ever deepening lvl of understanding of the game.

I didn't stay though, for several reasons, but mostly because for me there wasn't as much action as I like to see in games - it was more cerebral then other games.

So, I think its a pretty cool game, with a different kind of game play then most. If you want something that requires some serious thinking and business/accounting skills, EVE may be the game for you.

It is a more cerebral game than many others, that is true. But there is no lack of action if you want action as well. Join a corp that is in a declared war --- you'll get plenty of action, including everywhere in Empire space as well!

With about 10 mercenary corporations in a declared state of war against the alliance I am in, I see more action then I sometimes like. *cough* station campers *cough*. If you find there is a lack of something in EVE, it is probably because your not looking hard for it, or ... it hasen't found you ... yet.

Keep the armor hardened and the guns loaded, here we come baby.

I used to play Star Wars Galaxies and felt if I did not play for more than 2 days I was lost in what was going on. The mining and vending of all the items made it take up a lot of time I did not want to donate to the game.

In Eve, does one feel pressured into playing often or can one freely choose when to play?

If you do not get what I am asking that is alright, but thank you in advance if you attempt an answer.

Nope, not at all. As a matter of fact, the skill system is based on real time. You start training a skill when you are logged on then go about your business. It takes X amount of time, based on the difficulty, level and your attributes. So, whether you are online or offline, you improve your skills.

The only things you miss out on by not being on are oppurtunities to make money, like any other game, but ISK is easy enough to make IMHO that this isn't even a huge issue.
